I want loose waves/curls like this:

I definitley think you could achieve this with bantu knots...i had a similar hair style when i flat ironed my hair and wore it straight for a few days, than i put five bantu knots in at night and covered my head with my scarf and bonnet. When i took them down in the morning they were gorgeous! The key is to doing only a few bantu knots so you will have a looser, more wave like pattern, as opposed to doing a lot of bantu knots and having a tighter curl.

My guess it after you flat iron divide your hair in 5 sections. For each section do a two-strand twist, then put them in loose bantu knots. The next day as you're taking them out, have some moisturizer on your fingertips. Good luck!

Or you could probably achieve that look by just using a flat iron alone...Just twirl kinda like

You could get the look by wrapping your hair around a big barrel curling iron starting a few inches down from the root.

There are curling wands, but you can get the same effect using a regular curling iron by making sure to wrap the hair around the barrel, but don't open the clamp.

I definitely agree with everyone who said bantu knots. Here is a pic of a bantu knot-out I did on flat ironed hair (a few days old). I put a bit of leave-in before bed, put my hair into four bantu knots, and it turned out like this in the morning.

about 4 loose Bantu knots or

Curling with a larger barel like 1 1/2 or 1 inch.... grab hair, slide the barrel down about 2/3 of the length of your hair then begin to twirl the iron till all hair at the bottom is spiraled around the iron....hold for a couple sec then release.

Hope that make sense.

curl the hair up to about ear length or a little below, curl the ends back away from the face. I would use medium size to jumbo curling iron, the top is left smooth most likely her hair was flat ironed first then the ends were curled. the curl starts at the bottom half of her hair so bantu knots won't give that look it would give you wave from the roots and this style is smooth at the roots.

you can also use curling tongs, or your curling iron like a curling tong. I wear my hair like this sometimes, also if you use tongs or curling iron you want to leave the ends out it's not a full spiral curl, meaning the ends are not curled.

this is from bellasugar on how to get zoe's curls:

On damp hair, apply a heavy hold styling mist, like Ouidad Styling Mist Setting & Holding Spray ($15). Then blow dry, scrunching to create more volume if your hair is straight. If you're really curly, focus on brushing the hair out, using tension to relax and loosen the curl.
Use a medium-barrel curling iron (about 1½ inches) on one-inch sections of your hair, holding the iron vertically and wrapping each section securely around the barrel to create spiral curls.
For best results, use a little hair spray on each section and wrap the hair around the iron, starting a few inches down from the scalp, twisting clockwise outward until the entire strand is wrapped around the barrel. Tip: leave out about an inch of hair at the ends for a laid-back effect. Run your fingers through your curls to deconstruct them a little.
