I might get one of these. I don't know what type of minerals are in my water. Does anyone have a testimony?

Water filters are beneficial in taking out calcium and magnesium compounds that make water hard. Hard water has a high pH which means it opens up hair cuticles on your hair strands making them rough and making them get caught in those of neighboring cuticles leading to tangles. Also rough hair strands from raised cuticles do not reflect light as well as smooth cuticle so your hair ends up looking very dull. In time, hard water can be very damaging to your hair.

To see the difference using filters can make to how your hair looks and feels, buy a gallon or two of distilled water and wash your hair with it, then condition. (A gallon of distilled water was less than a dollar each the last time I bought some.) You may have to do this for a while but you'll definitely see a difference. Might be a small one, depending on how hard your water was. But there'll be one.

You might want to check and see if you live in a hard water area, first. If you have soft water, getting a filter won't help much....

I have hard water in my area. I bought a filter this week and used it twice to shower so far. Usually my skin is very ashy after a shower if I don't lotion. On both occasions I forgot to lotion my skin after I used the filtered water and there was no ashiness and that, for me is amazing especially as the weather is very cold and dry at the moment. I cant wait to wash my hair tomorrow!

As Sunshinelady indicated, most of our chlorine exposure is from the shower. You body can absorb 57% more chlorine through showering than through drinking a glass of tap water because your pores open up in a hot shower. Tap water is on the list of carcinogenics. Besides possibly containing cancer-causing agents, it can also cause hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, anemia and other health issues. It will also destroy protein in your body and hair.

Here is an excerpt from an article from a website that listed about 30 different articles on this subject from journals such as the American Journal of Public Health, Consumer Reports, Science News, New Scientist...

"Chlorine chemically bonds with protein in the hair, skin and scalp, which causes them to become brittle as well as lose color. The longer the shower the greater the concentration of chlorine gas in the air we breathe. Chlorine is a known poison and when showering is absorbed directly into the blood stream as well as through the lining of our lungs. To shower or to bath in tap water is like showering and bathing in a swimming pool. Warm shower water opens up the pores in the skin making our skin like a sponge."

From another article:

"Those of us who would shower in tap water as well as those around the household when we shower can receive six to 100 times more chemicals by breathing the air than they would by drinking the water. Fortunately chlorine can easily be removed from our shower water by several different filtering media."

I love both my shower and bath tub filters. Yes, my skin and hair are waaaaay softer and smoother, but what I like most about them is that they are helping protect my health as I am all about prevention.

My DH installed one after I bugged him about it . Our home has very hard water and I've had a feeling its been taking a toll on my hair to some degree or another. I've washed my hair about 3 times since it's been installed and my hair does feel much softer, but then again it could be the conditioner..:look: time will tell I suppose.

What i learned recently from a chemist is that hard water does not clean as well as soft water. because the hard water is loaded with these compounds, the water does not have much room to absorb dirt. it is when you remove the compounds in the hard water that allows more room for the water to absorb more dirt.

he said that is the principle behind woolite and why woolite is different from regular laundry detergents.. that woolite softens the water so that the water can absorb more dirt without much sudsing.

I just purchased a sprite slim line from Lowes - they had a god deal on it too- $29.97 for a filter/shower head combo. I used it this morning along with my dandruff shampoo and I have to say it is wonderful. It removes chlorine and sediments and the shower head has 5 settings. The replacement cartridges are only $9.97 and I will need to replace it every 6 mo. I showered with the message setting and the water pressure was phenomenal. It really cleaned my hair and made my TWA shiny, bouncy, and fluffy. It was looking a little ashy and limp. This is one of the best investments I have ever made.

oOOo...Now, that looks nice!

Well I broke down and ordered 2 of the sprite slim line shower heads w filter from Home Depot. I got one for hubby's shower so he wouldn't feel left out:grin:.

I agree. I did a searhc and a lot of members said the filter didn't do anything for the. A water softener is what really helps and using distilled water in the meantime.

Well I finally used my sprite slim line shower heads w filter last night, and I must say, I could feel some difference in my hair. I also noticed that I didn't need lotion on my body afterwards. For the price, I think it's worth it.
