ok remember when I first joined the board I said I'd have some really basic questions? No? Never mind, here's one:

How exactly do you do a hot oil treatment? I tried to do it a few times years ago but didn't notice much difference. That could be becuase I didn't have much of a routine. I used to wet the hair, slap on the hot oil then shampoo it out after about 30 mins. Is this the right way?

I've been recommended extra virgin olive oil. What do you guys think?

How often should I use a hot oil treatment? Every 2 weeks or so ok? (Plus should I always deep condition? I have done so every wash for the las month or so. Is this cool for the hair?)

Thanks sistas, I know I can ask so many questions without being made to feel stupid!

I think that doing a post-wash hot oil treatment should entail using a hot oil that was specially made for hair. We ladies on the board use some great natural oils ( like olive, avocado, jojoba, etc.), but I do not think that these work well for hot oil treatments. The hot oils that were specifically made for hair actually penetrate the hair.

Thanks for you r reply!

So olive oil should be for ordinary moisturising, rather than as a hot oil treatments? Do you have any natural suggestions or are there some brand names you could recommend?

thanks

Do y'all use olive oil out of the grocery store? I'm confused and do y'all use it like grease?

I, too, am interested in hot oil treatments. I think I'm going to do my first one in a couple of weeks. Is V05 a good brand?

I have heard that V05 has a good hot oil. I like ION hot oil and L'oreal Nature's Therapy Hot Oil Treatment. Both are really good and can be purchased at Sally's.

Daughter, I've used commercial hot oil products and regular old olive oil from the grocery store and both work very well. I heat up the oil in the micro for about 20 seconds and apply it to my scalp and hair, just enough to coat.

Then I put on a plastic cap and try to get in a workout (using the natural heat from my scalp instead of sitting under a dryer) for at least 45 minutes. Then I rinse and shampoo as usual.

I've been doing this weekly since August and it helps my scalp more so than my hair. I haven't had any scalp dryness or seen so much as one flake of dandruff since I started weekly hot oil treatments so I always make time for it. I also deep condition weekly.

Hope that helps!

thanks for that, I may give it a try next time I go to the gym. I remember using self-heating hot oil treatments ages ago, I'll look around and see if they're still out there

Supergirl---what do you like about the L'Oreal Nature's Therapy hot oil? DO you use it alone? How long do you leave it in?

I used this once alone and I thought it was horrible. I'l probably go back to mixing it to my QH Cholesterol or Mizani Moisturefuse until its gone.

What's the purpose of a hot oil treatment? Are the people who use hot oil treatments the ones who don't grease their scalp?

miss j,

i don't grease my scalp, but i want to know and understand why some ladies do grease their scalp, doesn't that clog the pores? please let me know.

supergirl,

do you really only use the oils that are specifically made for hot oil treatments? i think they are way too expensive imo. i use plain virgin olive oil mixed with honey, or vegetable oil, and i think it works great. as a regular oil the olive oil smell is too strong for me. but on this board a whole lot of females use the regular olive oil as a hot oil treatment. the v05 wouldn't even be enough for me. those little bitty tubes... but i did hear that it is good.
i was interested in the l'oreal nature's therapy hot oil too, at least that's a bigger bottle
