from what i gather, keep it moisturized, avoid friction with your clothes, try not to keep ponytails in too long or too tight.

Because this area tends to be extra dry might I suggest moisture! I use s-curl on this area to keep it extra moist. Like you I had that same problem. Not anymore!

Wild Growth Oil did it for me initial, sometimes I switch up with Castor Oil, but I also do the S-curl. I went from not even enough to braid to 4 inches now.
 
From reading previous posts I would also add a real satin/silk hair covering (bonnet,scarf etc.) for when you go to sleep.

Second, listen to your hair and adjust your hair care accordingly. As your body goes through changes, as the seasons change (climatic conditions includes when vacationing in other geo location), even the change in hair styles.....so might your hair's need change.
