Hijabis/ women who cover their hair regularly

Hi
I was just wondering how women who cover wear their hair when they don't have a scarf on? I wear the hijab and for the majority of my hair journey I never wore styles just like braids or twist pinned to protect the ends. Do any of you do styles regularly that u wear in the house like flat iron, rod set, up do etc? Lately I have been starting to style my hair but I'm just wondering about everyone else.

I'm pretty boring with my hair and it didnt have much t do with hijab.
When I wore a hijab: bun
When I didn't : bun Or I would wear it Down

I do rollerset my hair but I always put it in a bun after , I have tried a braidout but I bunned it up I guess I'm not good enough at styling to want to wear the styles out and be confident

coracaox-
I tend to wear two strand twists or mostly twistouts.
I bun either style under my hijab.
On occasion I will blow dry and flat iron but not often.

It does require a bit more effort.:yep:

Sometimes I rollerset, but 90% of the time I wear a bun for a protective style whether wearing a hijab or not.

interesting topic (hope this doesn't feel like gawking. i'm not muslim -- which, uhm, you can probably tell from my avatar -- but i'm fascinated/curious about this as well)

Kalia1,
Are your twists mini or regular? I used to wear twists but I had to stop because I hate my scarf not being flat on my head. Does this bother anyone else? If so what are some protective styles/styles that you all are using?

I a-l-w-a-y-s bunned my hair, even before I wore hijab. My family always joked that I came out of the womb with one . Nowadays, I wash and deep condition my hair on the weekend and put my hair in big twists and braids. Then, once they've dried completely, I'll open them and wear them in a bun.

I also flat iron occasionally when I'm feeling a change.

coracaox Do you wear an undercap before you put on your hijab? They usually keep your hair flatter if you're wearing braids or twists. It also helps keep your scarf from sliding every which way on your head by the end of the day. :)

coracaox-My twists are mini I also secure them down with an undercap.
This helps for my style to not be seen through my scarf. hannan describes a great idea that I will begin.
Big braids and twists to stretch my hair to place in a bun.

Hey yall. I'm not muslim either but can I ask yall a question? Do you care about the fabric u use for your hijab? Or do u just wear another scraf underneath?

Hannan,
I dont wear an undercap just a silk or satin scarf. I will try that it probably would make my hair waaay flatter.

I personally don't worry bat the material my scarf is just bc I wear something under it. It's pretty hard to find scarves not made of cotton and polyester

transitioning?

Fabric is definitely important. Cotton can do severe damage if it's used as an underscarf.
As far as the outer scarf goes it doesn't really matter because it's not as fitted.

Me personally i love buns and rollersets! I actually finished flat ironing my hair earlier as it's eid tomorrow and i've got a few events to attend!

Now ladies most hijabs are made from cotton or polyester so i ALWAYS wear my silk headscarf underneath my hijab, when i didn't my hair was always dry and would always feel rougher.

Sometimes i do cornrows small and big then when they get messy take them out and wear it as a braidout!

That's a good question... I'm going to ask my mom. When she was in israel they had to wear those and at that same time she had long hair by lhcf standards so now I'm curious. I keep my head covered 98% of the time but not Muslim.

I'm not Muslim and please don't be offended if I sound totally ignorant but I think hijabs are beautiful! I always stare when I see women wearing them. They are so pretty. Just popped in to give a compliment. Shuffling out now. Thanks!

I'm the exact opposite about my scarf being flat. I always joke that I don't care if my scarf is lumpy because when I get where I'm going my I can give my hair a shake and I will look great.

I usually twist and rod set my hair. I like to wear it out because I'm home so often. I work from home so I'm usually going out for errands and visiting. When I'm visiting if I'm going to be somewhere I'm taking my hijab off I will pull my hair in a loose pony and then give it a shake to fluff it back up.

My go to protective style are mini box braids and while wearing that my scarf is usually flat.

I'm off to finish cleaning for Eid tomorrow:grin:

Kalia1 thanks for answering. I had noticed that most women I see use cotton or polyester for their hijabis. I always that it would reck havoc on my hair if I ever did that.

I wear mini twists in front only so that my hijab is flat and my hair is always pulled into a bun. Most of my scarves are not cotton, but I still wear an underscarf, for extra protection and to flatten my hair. At home when my hijab is off, I still keep my hair in a bun. I really only style when I am going to a party or something special, and I usually do twist outs or flat ironing.

great thread,.. and i gotta admit that i've always been very curious about women who wear hijabs ... i mean their hair. I always thought that their hair must be absolutely gorgeous since its not exposed to the elements and they have to worry less about gel and styles that are too tight.

question: I know that different muslim woman follow different "rules" with the hijab,.. but generally,.. when are you allowed to take it off? only around women? family? in buildings?

Carmelella A woman's allowed to take it off when in the presence of close male relatives (i.e. father, brother, son, etc.). Otherwise, she must wear her hijab in the presence of other men. :)

I think of it this way: a lot of women on this board wear wigs. Not much of a difference in terms of protecting hair.

I used to wear hijabs made of cotton, but they would always make my hair a little dry. Now I wear a silk or satin underscarf under my hijab, but in the summer I wear lighter hijabs made of silk.
