does any one have streaks and no problems?

I would absolutely love to have some blonde hi-lites, but I'm not going to even go there. I think it would be very damaging since I am already relaxed. I bet the natural girls would have better results with color.

Sniffle...We are on the same page--I want blonde/caramel hi-lites as well...I'll be paying close attention to this thread!

I am a relaxed 4A fine haired gal who has had hilites for 2 years with no problems. I get them redone every 6 to 9 months...in fact I will redo them in December after my relaxer touchup. My stylist even uses the dreaded bleach (foil method). I love them...so far, so good. I am certain that the info I gained from this board has helped the overall health of my hair.

I haven't had success with highlights, but that may be because my whole head is color-treated already, then I got highlights on top of that!!

The first time I got it done, I got foil highlights and everything was fine, but then I had them redone (this time with the cap method) 9 months later and all hell broke loose!! I guess bleaching again on top of strands that already had been bleached, was just too much for my hair to take. Pretty soon most of the highlights were just (Poof!!!) gone!! Most of the highlighted pieces broke off.

Actually some of it survived and I'm still growing them out.

I think I'll be leaving the bleach alone in the future!!

Hi!
I have been sporting highlights in my hair since 1997. My advice to you is if you plan on getting highlight, take care of your hair in the BEST way possible (as if I REALLY nedded to say that!) I have high light as well as all over color. Blow drying hair with the the hand held blow dryer is torture. Your will look EXTRA thirsty! I would recommend getting them done professionally and purchasing yourself some Sebastian's (not Jazzings) clear color shine to help protect those highlights and keeps your hair healthy and shiney. Also the MOtions color refresher in Nutmeg brown is abso-fabulous! Good luck

I've done the blonde streaks thing a few times in my early 20s. It looks amazing and it gets you a lot of looks/compliments, but they dry out your hair after a time. Even when you take care of it. I vowed never to go there again. Every summer though, I get tempted...

All over color and highlights? Wow. Is your hair relaxed or natural?

Excellent advice. Using a rinse in a complementary color always helps to keep highlights healthy and happy.

If you've never colored your hair before, consider using permanent color instead of bleach to get highlights. Bleach can be done, but you have to take extra good care of your hair and on some, the bleach just won't agree with the relaxer. I like using a cap instead of foil - but that's a personal preference. It gives the thinner, more subtle look I like.

Foil highlights can look beautiful as well.

There is a member here with lovely highlights. I forget her user name but she recently posted pics. The key to taking care of colored hair is restoring the cuticle. Rinses help, as does ensuring that the hair gets enough protein (it should be at least monthly or bi-monthly) and making sure your hair retains moisture (use some oil on the ends to seal in moisture)....

A careful conditioning balance is important, but relaxed hair can take color if you are careful and you take excellent care of it.

And what a coinkidink - it's CHAYA who had the phenomanally gorgoeus highlights. Check out her pics and take her advice!

all this sounds funny to me sincce I have natural blonde streaks in front my head. They look exactly like highlites.I esp hated them when I was younger since everyone thought I dyed my hair and I would always get in trouble from my principal and teachers(They wouldnt believe it was natural)
My mom even said ppl would always tell her when I was a baby "Shame on you.How could you dye that baby's hair!"
laugh.gif

I tend to appreciate them more now tho even tho highlites don't appeal to me that much...I am not adventurous enough to experiment with colour.

So permanent color dosn't ever require any use of bleach? What about a highlighting kit like african pride hilites? Is that like a permanent color or does that involve bleach?
I believe I remember you (Tracy) saying that if you've dyed your hair a dark color, it's hard to get it light. So would that apply if your hair was permanently dyed a pretty dark color and you wanted to do like caramel highlights?

I second that CHAYA's HAIR is ABSOLUTELY (sic) BEAUTIFUL! Her hi-lites are exactly what I have been wanting; I apologize for not bringing her name into this thread-when I first posted earlier on this topic...

Hi! Thanks ladies for the compliments! People do come up to me alot and compliment me on the highlights and they ask "What color is that in your hair?" Problem is I really dont know! I asked my ex- beautician for all over red hair with blonde highlights back in February. Since then it has changed colors.

Blaxarose: The motions refresher just deposits color, from what I know abou tit. Therefore, I only use the conditioner if I want to tone down these blonde highlights for a little while.I used the Nutmeg this weekend and now my hair has reddish brown highlight. So it looks more Fall- like. I dont use this conditioner every week so it should be all rinse out in a couple of weeks. It is a very good ocnditioner. I wouldnt use it every week though. I have found it to be slightly drying if you use it too often. I stick to my Keracare/ Nexxus on most wash days.
I wish I had my sister to take pictures of the back of my hair right now, but unfortunatley she is sick and in the hospital with Pnuemococcal Pneumonia. Please pray for her to have a speedy recovery. Thanks ladies~

I have bleached in highlights and for me it was almost impossible to keep my hair healthy. The first set of highlights that I had were Dark and Lovely and she combed them through, the second set were bleached and then covered with a semi permanent red color. The bleach runined my hair. When I would comb it the only broken pieces that would be there were the bleached one.

I am so glad that they are growing out. The fact that they are now just the ends of my hair is good and bad. Good because it is almost all gone, bad in that it makes my ends look thin. If you think that relaxing thins your hair, try bleach if you want thin hair.

The Motions Color Return is great stuff. I use it on a regular during the summer. I love the red tones because it actually showed up in my hair and did not cause breakage like the Jazzing color rinses.

I've had success with all types of coloring, highlights and bleaching. I do it in moderation though. Definitely no bleaching more than twice a year.

I feel ya, Karezone!! I'm still growing out some of my highlights too, and my ends STILL look kind of thin because of that!! It's amazing how much thicker my hair is at the top and in the middle. I can't wait 'til all this thinness is cut out and gone. That's why I MUST keep getting my regular trims even though is hurts me sooo much to lose any of my length!!

I have highlights and so far so good! I do keep my hair very very moisturized and I get a clear cellophane every two/three months.

I also have blonde highlights. I have not had any problems with breakage. I rarely use heat on my hair. I also keep it very moisturzed and conditioned. I feel the key to surviving highlights is to keep hair moisturized.

chaya thumbs up on Sebastian's Clear color shine. You guys are right that Jazzy is the worst. Blow drying with high heat will fry those blond streaks. Moisture is the key ! I think I'm just luckly that my hair forgives me so often with all the drama I put it thru .

Hey I wanted to make a quick correction:
I dont use the Sebastian's colorshines cellaphane however I do use the professional equivalant called Prizms clear transluscent color gloss in clear ofcourse. It is VERY good and works wonders on protecting my highlights. It can only be purchased in one of those professional stores though.

Yes - permanent color DOES require the use of bleach whenbyou are lifting the hair from DARK to LIGHT. Your confusion about color is a matter of semantics and the fact that often the components of color are referred to interchangeably - bleach is used interchangeably (when it's discussed) with peroxide which is used interchangeably with developer. You need PEROXIDE to color the hair permanently when you are going LIGHTER. Peroxide ALONE is often referred to as bleach and is what is often used when creating highlights. Peroxide PLUS a permanent color formulation is termed "permanent color".

If you dyed your hair a VERY dark color it would be difficult to lighten the hair again past a light brown - yes. You could do it - but it would require a very high concentration of peroxide to do it. But it depends on how dark you go, what your hair texture is, and what else is going on with it in terms of what you use on it etc.. It depends ALWAYS on YOUR HAIR.

It's just not an exact science. Sorry I can't explain better than that, but I hope it helped anyway. Maybe you google "haircolor" and see what comes up to get a better sense of the process.

oh man....this is confusing....i dunno, it seems about 50-50 , chance of getting damage according to u guys....i would like some high lite but iam still unsure, but if i do decide to do ut, it will be when i am much closer to my goal...and i feel better about wearing my hair out

i see girls at school all the time with nice highlights and I WANT SOME TOO
cry3.gif
I just get worried about my hair breaking off. That and layered cuts are making feel just like i'm missing out on something. i know people say they hate layers and stuff but when you see "longies" wearing their hair down and it's all layered and pretty i just wanna get me some--but i digress---yeah, i worry about the effects of highlighting also
