Hi Ladies, have any of you had issues with either henna or indigo and dermatitis (aka dandruff or flaky scalp)?

Sometime this year I started having this problem really bad and I can't figure out why! I've pretty much eliminated some of the possible culprits (e.g., changed from shampoo to mud hair wash; have used henna alone for years; and I don't think it's due to texlaxing, b/c I texlaxed for a good year before the problem started, though it still might be related).

Anyway, one other thing I can think is that I started mixing indigo into my henna earlier this year. I know some people have problems with indigo -- anyone here have some insight?

Thank you!!!

Hi!

The first and only time I did henna I used indigo (a few weeks ago). My head was itching after a while/ I did a reaction test on my arm beforehand and it was fine so I didn't expect that, lol. I didn't leave it on overnight as planned because I couldn't put up with it. When I rinsed my scalp wasn't red or anything, no bumps. My hair took it well. I was just itchy until I rinsed it all out.

I looked around on some henna forums and what I read was that indigo is drying, so if your hair and/or scalp are dry the indigo is going to make it worse by sucking up the moisture. Personally I'm going to try to make my indigo with a little more liquid in it next time and see if that helps. I did read that using coconut oil beforehand is supposed to help prevent your hair from drying out as much (which I did use, so that may be why my hair was okay) so I'm going to do my scalp next time.

I hope you figure out what's causing your scalp irritation. :yep:

Thanks ladies. Maybe it's something I need to look out for. B/c this itchy flakiness is NOT CUTE!

Is the henna and indigo your using body art grade? The kind east indian women have their hands painted with. The reason I'm asking is because I read that some henna and indigo mixtures have chemicals added to them, they are not meant to be used on the skin and they can cause some of the allergic reactions that over the counter hair dyes have been known to cause.

I can't use indigo in my hair anymore. My scalp irritation started off mild and increased over time. Having jet black hair wasn't worth it. I ordered my indigo from reputable sources (Hennasooq and Henna for Hair).

I gave up on indigo too. My reason is mostly due dryness. I went back to using more Amla then henna in my mix and adding Brahmi too and got similar result with indigo without the scalp issues and dryness.

My last mix was:
I used a measuring cup.
Henna - 1/3 cup
Amla - 1/2 cup
Brahmi – 60ml

I didn't use lemon to prevent dryness. I made it in the morning with warn water and used it the next morning.

It happen to me in March, i end up loosing 4" inches of hair. Its allergic reaction to indigo and it could have been worst. I lost alot of my edges, they were inflame and it got worst 2 months later. My first visit with derm i was treates with medicated shampoo qnd erma smoothe, it increase my shedding and flakes. I stop the shampoo because my hair was coing out in handful. I went to another dr black she said most reactions happen 2-3 months after, but that PPD in hair dyes can be dangerous. my edges started growing back Jul-Aug. I used flucinode for 1 month, flakes stop. I cowash weekly, poo once a month. My texture change, stringy, thin hir, but its slowly coming back. I was apl, so this was a shock. You need to get the dermatitis treated it won't stop on its own. Dermasmoothe works for most, but its prescripition. I wish you well.
