I have questions with henna. i wanna dye my hair but i don't want the drama of breakage. Then when I look at people's ahir on here it looks super nice and shiny. Is it a way to dye without breakage?? What is a good one to use?? And will it lift the color of your hair??

Gracias

Hey there and welcome to the board! Please see my comments in bold caps below:

I have questions with henna. i wanna dye my hair but i don't want the drama of breakage. USED PROPERLY, HENNA CONDITIONS AND STRENGTHENS MY HAIR LIKE NOTHING ELSE, PLUS THE BLING BLING SHINE CANNOT BE DUPLICATED; IF USED INCORRECTLY, IT CAN CAUSE BREAKAGE, JUST LIKE TOO MUCH PROTEIN . . . Then when I look at people's hair on here it looks super nice and shiny. Is it a way to dye without breakage?? YES, I HAVE BEEN DYING MY 30% GRAY FOR OVER 2 YEARS WITHOUT BREAKAGE AND WITH INCREDIBLE COLOR, CONDITION, STRENGTH AND SHINE -- What is a good one to use?? HENNA HENNA HENNA AND/OR INDIGO!!And will it lift the color of your hair?? TO MY KNOWLEDGE, HENNA DOES NOT LIFT COLOR, IT DEPOSITS RED COLOR PERMANENTLY ON TOP OF WHATEVER COLOR IS THERE -- IT TURNS MY GREY A LOVELY LOVELY GOLDEN RED AND IT TURNS REST OF MY DARK BROWN HAIR A RICH DARK REDISH BROWN

Gracias

The biggest piece of advice that I got here was to not add any acidic juice like lemon juice or orange juice for color release. I followed that advice and my hair has come out great every time. Healthier and stronger. :yep:

i've hennaed several times, with plenty of success each time.

and i don't shy away from acidic terps, like lemon juice, or ACV, because i've found extremely moisturizing conditioners that combat the dryness you can get from henna.

i'd advise that until you find that perfect conditioner for you, you might not want to add any acidic compound to your mix.

i use jamila henna, which has 1 of the longest dye release times. that's the main reason why i add lemon juice / acv to my mixes. i've found that although color release is possible without it, i've gotten more dramatic color results with the acids than the 1 time i did it without.

i've got pictures and a recipe in my fotki, if you're interested. my password's in my profile.

hope that helped! happy henna-ing!

edited to add:
many people have success adding things like oils, conditioners, yogurt, etc to their mixes. however, because my primary goal with henna is color, i skimp on things that'll interfere with the color deposit. if you don't want too much color to deposit, skip on the acidics altogether, and add oils and conditioners to your mix.

no, henna by itself will not lift the color of your hair. however, you can use (separately) a color lifter to help showcase the color of the henna.

my hair is a light red color now (my profile picture shows the color a bit, but i lifted the color again yesterday, so as soon as i get a new camera, i'll show the difference). i lifted my natural color using Clairol Luminize, a gentle color lifter without ammonia. its amazing how color lifted, henna-ed hair looks in the sunlight! ooh, i wish i had a camera so i could show yall!

I agree with StLucianSweetie, don't add anything acidic to the mix. I henna every two weeks and my hair never comes out dry. Not only do I not add anything acidic, I add honey and a little bit of conditioner to it to make sure that it doesn't leave my hair dry. A lot of members on this board advise to deep condition the hair before applying the henna, and I don't do that either. If I want a deep red color, I simply add paprika or cranberry juice to the mix, and I'm good to go.

HTH!

I am goin to try it tomorrow for the first time righ now the mix outside on the table in the sun for a better color release it gonna stay out there till tomorrow.

MEHNDI HENNA DELUXE
OLIVE OIL
CONDITIONER
LEMON JUICE
2 EGGS
TOO THICK TO STIR SO I ADD WATER UNTILL IT WERE EASY TO STIR

Why are you adding eggs to the mix? Not criticizing but just wondering... that much protein with acid would tear my hair up. (dryness and breakage)

the olive oil will hinder the maximum amount of color deposit you'll get on your hair. as oil covers the hair shaft, it seals it from being penetrated fully by the henna. if your goal was to get as much color release as possible, then next time you might need to significantly lighten up, or remove, the oil.

I dk this my first time i have made enough to last me for a while tha (OLIVE OIL) wasnt but a lil bit ,and far as the egg concern its on this u tube websight it goes like this

HENNA
EGGS

HENNA
EGGS If you don't know how henna by itself will react to your hair, PLEASE do not add egss to the mix -- it is potentially drying, could cause hard hair and breakage. IMO, eggs in a henna mix may be asking for touble that you may not need
OILVE OIL
YOUGURT
LEMON JUICE This is optional and IMO, totally unnecessary unless you have very oily hair -- you DO NOT need acid to get good release and deposit. Really really, don't.
ESSENTAIL OIL
TEA
VINGAR Another acid is surely not needed, NO ACID IS NEEDED. Sorry for the caps, but this is sooooo not necessary and is the source of so much potential problems.

Girl, PLEASE do not use this mix on your hair. It MAY come out OK, but my over 2 years of experience with henna tells me you asking for trouble if you put this on your hair. *sign*. Just keep the mix simple at first and then try adding all the other stuff. The eggs, lemon juice and vinegar is like :nono:

Glad you posted this thread, I have done henna twice before. I used ACV for color release, and added olive oil, to combat the drying effect and it worked nicely.

But I have another question if you dont mind me asking in your thread.

What is the best henna to dye your hair a reddish color? I know there are different kinds which one gives you the most color?

Also, does the color get more vibrant, the more you use it?

the color gets deeper with each application. for instance, on a blonde haired woman, the 1st time she hennas, her hair will be a bright red. the second time, it will deepen to a wine red, and the third time, it could deepen even more to a darker red.

this happened to me (though i don't have light hair to begin with). so to still show off the color, i started lifting my natural color with clairol luminize.

and all natural, body-art quality henna will dye your hair red. i'd recommend the brand jamila, since that's what i'm used to using.

The henna w/ the highest dye content is Yemeni. Yemeni tends to go a bit more brownish and the Indian-Pakistani ones tend to go more true red.

Jamila (brand name) and Rajasthani (regional) will probably give you the truest reds...Yemeni is great for grey coverage. Of course, what color you get really depends on how long you dye release it and then how long you keep it on your hair. The longer you keep henna from any region/brand on you head and allow it to dye release before hand, the redder it will be.

Yeah, the color gets more vibrant because henna depots dye every time you use it, even in very small quantities like doing a "gloss".

As Neroli said, skip the acids and just let it dye release over time 15+ hours- 24 hrs.
