Henna washing out for weeks???

Ladies, I find that everytime I use henna, it keeps washing out up to three weeks after the fact! I henna'd last weekend, but there is still a little bit of red everytime I wash my hair. I can't use my light colored towels anymore! What's up? Did I do something wrong???

I usually spend like 30-45 minutes washing my hair thoroughly after henna and I haven't had this problem. Maybe you're not completely washing it out?
I start off laying down in the tub and putting my head directly under the full-force faucet. I do that for maybe 15 or so minutes, and then I stand up and let the shower water rinse it for another 10 or so. Then I remove my shower head and place it right by my scalp and keep rinsing until all of the water is completely clear, and that usually takes about 10 minutes.
I am definitely an environmentally-concerned person so that does make me feel bad to use all of that water, but I usually take 5-7 minute showers normally so I hope that balances this out somewhat. :-/

That has happened to me too. I only use water to wash out my Henna, learned this from an Indian woman, and it still runs weeks later. I'm afraid to wear any new clothes because I've afraid it will stain the collar.

I have porous hair... :look:
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I henna gloss instead of a full-out henna.
I'm surprised no one has an answer for you with so many ladies on the board using henna.

ETA: I also use Jamila henna. Don't have trouble rinsing this at all. But I definitely did have this same problem when I used to put rinses in my hair. My shirt collars all got ruined.

I don't know much about porous hair, but maybe that's it. I feel that I rinse and shampoo well enough. Even if I didn't, still having red wash out after 4-5 washes is a bit much.

I've used henna for a year now with no issues. Have you ever tried a different brand from your current one? I've read that some brands rinse out easier than others. And what's your process for rinsing? I use Nupur 9 Blend, do an initial rinse out in the shower, and then 3-4 washes with VO5.

Or maybe more co-washes during the first week post-treatment would get all the issues out of the way faster? Thinking out loud...Good luck to you!

TIA w/ the bolded. I've used 2 henna brands (can't remember name of 1st) but currently using Jamila and it rinses a lot easier. Also, I've only read of rinsing henna with water, and using conditioner, not shampoo. The condish has that slip to glide out the henna (or something like that is what I'm thinking). Next time try shampoo first, apply henna (let marinate), rinse well with water, really well, then use conditioner a few times to remove the remaining henna, rinse, rinse, dc, rinse. Also how thick is your henna mixture, that may make a difference in rinsing too.

It's weird to me that you're having red rinse off. Whenever I henna my hair sometimes the top of the henna turns a little red while I let it rest/sit/develop or whatever and if I let it sit on my skin my skin will be a red orange that gets more maroon over time but the henna itself, even when its rinsing out of my hair, is never red. It's not even red on the paper towel twist I wrap around my head to prevent drippies - it's greenish brown. I've only used Jamila henna and wholesale BAQ henna that's named after the country/region its from and packaged by/for the seller I get it from.

What henna are you using?

You need to dunk you head in water and let it sit for a few minutes SEFVERAL times to get the henna out and keep it from running. I fil up the kitchen sink with water and drunk my head in there and break up my hair. Then drain and repeat. Up to 4 times. When I'm done no more red. Before I did this I would get henna color everywhere. Rinsing was not enough for me, even if I was adding conditioner.

the last time i did henna/indigo it took 3 washes after the initial to get it all out of my hair.

I had a similar issue when I first started using henna. I read here and tried the Jamila brand and it made a HUGE difference. Now, I use Karishma henna and it does just as well. Both are very fine and rinse out really well. I rinse with my hand held shower wand. I rinse for a few minutes until the water is almost clear. Then, I use a conditioner for 2 or 3 'washes' and again rinse each time until the water is clear.

I just henna'd over the weekend and the few greys I have are a beautiful orange/red color.

I'm not sure what brand you are using but that might make a difference.

I use rajasthani henna and I don't have that problem. I use to use yemeni and it's pretty stringy so a week later henna would be coming out some still. I make a henna gloss of sorts and do the mermaid dunking in a bucket method. I then cowash about 2-3 times or so and detangle on the last cowash. I scrub my scalp then to. Also DCing overnight helps as opposed to doing it only for 30 min or so. Also the thickness of your henna is key. Perhaps try making your next batch thinner or mix it with oils/conditioner.

I tried that. Still the same issue.

I was using Jamila,

I've decided to go back to cassia because all 4 of my henna attempts have had this problem. I was just curious if anyone had the same problem.

Exactly my process, hand held shower wand and all. I also henna'd over the weekend.
