Help with my ends....let me explain...

Hello All!!!

Today i got the trim (at supercuts) that i needed in years and noticed that my ends keep sticking to each other. I had this problem before i got my trim and blamed it on the damaged ends. Now that i'm thinking of it...i've had this problem for about 3 years now but never really addressed it because I'm in protective styles (wigs and weaves) 80% of the year.

I dont know if i'm wording this right so i will explain. When combing my hair (whether it's with my jumbo star seamless comb or finger comb) my ends stick to each other....sort of like a tangle but not in a knot. I'm afraid to comb because i think i'm breaking my hair further especially after my needed trim today (lost 3 inches). I really dont know what's causing this problem. Could it be low prosperity? Whatever the cause is....is there a cure?

FYI i'm texlaxed. The last time i texlaxed my hair was on Dec 30,2013. My hair is currently flat ironed with minimum product in my hair (leave in treatment from my Optimum Salon Relaxed kit and ORS Heat Protector).

I did notice that the problem went away when i added EVCO to the ends before wrapping it for the night.

This happens to me too!

It is one of the reasons why I implemented major changes in my regimen. I wouldn't recommend combing through them without dealing with the situation because it will cause splits. Like you, I've experienced it for years but just ignored it because I was protective styling 90% of the time.

My hair is not at its best yet but has gotten much better. For me, the stuck-together strands occur most when I need a trim or when I'm using too much product. When I was protective styling often, I would use so much moisturizer that when I took down my buns, my strands stuck together so much that they resembled dreadlocks! When I started using less product--just a dime to quarter sized amount of leave-in and 2 drops of oil--my strands were moisturized without sticking to each other at all. I am now dusting my hair every 6 weeks, so that should also eliminate the stuck-together effect on my ends. I have also noticed that cross-wrapping my hair keeps my strands smooth and less prone to clinging to one another. It might be a porosity issue but I'm not sure...you're lo-po & texlaxed and it happens to you, but I'm high porosity and relaxed I experience it also.

Sorry op, I don't have any advice, but I just wanted to say your hair has really come a long way in the past year. It has really thickened up and looks really healthy. Keep up the good work!

Highly porous hair probably. Your cuticles are raised which is why the oils help.

I have this prob but it can be the entire shaft. Cleared it up with acv rinses. Just a cap in a huuuge cup of wter after rinsing out dc. I leave it in. Ceramide oils are a huge help as well such as sunflower or grapeseed. They smooth those cuticles right down. I oil rinse or hot oil treatments with almost only ceramides. My final tip would be heavy sealing with thick butters ir even grease to keep the moisture in since raised cuticles keeps the hair open it dries out real fast.

Funny EVCO helped you. The only time I have this issue is when I use EVCO.

about 4 inches of my bangs/hairline used to do that. Stick together and then when I try to detangle it would end up ripping and causing split ends. I eventually just cut about 3 inches off and it feels better, not great but better. I am thinking it is some sort of damage that it is still recovering from however.

if you got it cut then good! If not be really careful detangling because too much manipulation will split the hairs really easy.

My ends stick together if I flatironed my hair. With rollersets I don't have a problem.

If anything, this sounds like highly porous ends. Your actual strand could have normal porosity, but since the ends have been around longer they have more wear and tear-- and tend to have raised cuticles. Because of these raised cuticles, the strands catch and stick together at the ends. You should already have a regular [mild] protein in your hair diet; now you should incorporate a moderate to heavy protein, especially focused on your ends (Komaza Protein Strengthener is a good one). Also, regular trims is a good idea-- even if you stay in protective styles.

My ends used to clump together after a trim when I was relaxed. I thought it was static, but now that I yhink about it my cuticles were probably raised creating a velcro effect

this is me! i am low porous too and i have fine hair. i have to really stay on top of detanging my hair to remove shed hairs.

Allathis! I'm high porosity, fine, and texlaxed. I started using French Perm stabilizer after shampooing just once a week (down from co-washing 2x/wk), pre-pooing with ceramide conditioners, and dusting every 6 wks. My ends are good now.

I agree with DarkJoy about the ceramide oils...I use Africa's Best Herbal Oil which contains at least 3 or 4 ceramide oils in it and it really does help to keep the strands smooth and less prone to sticking.
