Help with 19 mo baby's hair

I have a 19 mo little girl with dry hair. No matter what I do I can't get it to keep its shine and it feels soooo dry. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can use with her hair? Presently I use Kids Organics products, but I want to try something else.

I think you should leave her hair alone right now...she's just a baby. Just make sure it's well moisturized in the morning and at night and don't worry about it shining etc. cause you might do more damage if she senses anyone thinks something is "wrong" with her hair.

And PLEASE...if you're going to relax it...don't put a relaxer in that child's hair until she starts menses and her hair has matured.

When I see otherwise pretty little girls with thin relaxed, over processed hair I want to call CPS.

I remembered seeing this website about children's hair...maybe it will be of some assistance to you: http://www.itsallgoodhair.com/gallery.html

Hey,
My sis went through this same problem with her 16 month son, She now greases his scalp with sulfur8. Shampoo him with Dove intense moisture, oils his hair with Keracare jojoba oil moisturizer and Africa's best oil.

Is your daughter in daycare? Is her scalp really dry also? My nephew's scalp was alo pretty dry at a point of time. She took him to the doctor and turns out he had a form of ring worm in the scalp:eek:  (from the other kinds at daycare) So she got him some medicated shampoo which helped. The ringworm was covering his pores not allowing scalp oils to get to his hair. It was like it was COATED in dryness. Hope this helps.

If the Keracare fails please take her to the doctor. As a matter of fact I would advise you to take her to the doc first. Hope I helped you

I would try to use Suave conditioner with EVOO and Carol Daughter's HHB and Hair Balm just to name a few. These products have done wonders on my baby girl's hair.

Oh, I definitely was NOT even thinking about relaxing. My problem with her hair is that it doesn't keep moisture. Maybe it's the products that I'm using. And when I speak about shine what I'm referring to is that I will oil (not grease) her hair and it will look like I didn't do anything with her hair that day. I love my daughter's hair. She was sporting an afro at church this weekend and looking mighty cute.

Don't use straight shampoo, dilute it ALOT with water. I use the fusion method to wash my two daughters hair and it was the best thing I ever did. For my 2 yr old, I start by "washing" with conditioner, then I rinse and add the diluted shampoo with more conditioner, after I massage through and rinse I add more conditoner and let that sit for just a few minutes(I let it sit for about an hour with my 9 yr old). I then rinse and silky soft hair. I then add castor oil and coconut oil. Their hair has done a total change in dryness with this washing method(I got the wash method from this board)

HTH,

GREAT! I'm sure she was adorable.

The most important thing I've learned about moisturizing my hair is that I need to "seal" the moisture in with oil afterwards. SistaSlick posted this really great thread regarding moisturizing and sealing...so maybe do a search for it. Personally, I moisturize with Phytologie hair balm and then seal with bit of coconut and jojoba oils. All of these products would work just as great if not better on natural hair.

Thanks so much!

Try Aubrey Organics conditioners (not the shampoo's). I use either white camillia, honeysuckle rose or island naturals on my daughters hair and I tell ya that denman brush slips right thru. You can give it a try too. I guarantee you will love em! As far as shampoo's I use Keracare hydrating detangling shampoo. Other shampoo's I've tried makes her hair feel tight. This I do once a week.

As far as oils I use avocado butter mixed with some olive oil, corn oil and almond oil. Butters are too hard and oils are too light. This combo gives the right "weight", has better "hair cling" and lengthens her curls. Natural hair will not have a shine but will have a sheen to it. Too keep her hair supple, flexible and moist you may have to throw in a condition wash midweek. Don't worry...you'll find your way and figure out which products work and which doesn't.

I had the same problem with my daughter when she was 18months old. This is what started us on our hair journey. With your child being so young, I wouldn’t put too many products in her hair. My daughter is now two ( will be 2 ½ in May). I wash her hair once per week with CON. I used L’Oreal Kids for a while and it worked Okay but the CON adds so much moisture. I spray a light mist of S-Curl in her hair every other day. It keeps it soft and defines her wave pattern like nobody’s business. On the days that I don’t use the S-curl, I just simply add a little water to her hair to re-soften it. She also has a very dry scalp so I grease her scalp 3 times per week with Sulfur 8 ( the one with the blue cap for kids). Sometimes I mix a little WGO with the Sulfur 8. Her hair has made a complete turn around since I started this regime.

I feel your pain about your daughter's hair. When my daughter was that age, her hair was very dry. She has sandy brown hair, so it looks dry and coarse. She is now two and has beautiful sandy brown hair. I use Elasta QP Creme Conditioning Shampoo and Intense Conditioner. I use the Recovery Oil Moisturizer Lotion daily which makes her hair straight and manageable. I used to grease her scalp with pure coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil. Recently, I started using At One Supergro, which is awesome. The Supergro gives it a shine and it looks healthy. She gets a lot of compliments on her hair.

I like "no poo" regimens for my two (3years and 20months). Their hair is too delicate for shampoo. Also, most young kids don't use the same products that older people use, so they don't really need anything too strong to get the hair clean. A good warm water rinsing will suffice, unless they play in sandboxes or something like that.

I also follow their conditioner washes up with a creamy type leave in conditioner as their water based moisturizer- something like Neutragena Triple Moisture silk touch leave in or Salerm 21 works really well on their hair as well as my own. My son has 3b/c hair that is thicker and curlier than his sister's so he needs an extra moisturizer on top of the leave in. I usually go with Elasta QP mango butter for him, and put a light coating of coconut oil to seal it in. My daughter has 2c/3a hair that is very fine. I just go with the leave in and a tiny bit of coconut oil to seal in her moisture. Anything else and her hair will be limp with product. :) Nothing goes on their scalp b/c their other products are moisture rich. For daily moisture- I love NTM silk touch leave in w/ a light oil. This basic regimen really works well for them.
