HELP!! What to do about FINE hair!!

Hey guys,
I was wondering what I can do about my fine hair. You see, my hair is naturally fine in texture. I guess it's hereditary. Both my sister and I have fine hair. Our grandmother had some white in her blood, so she had really baby fine curly hair. I hate that my hair isn't thick like some people though. I've even changed my relaxer to a mild one, and have stopped relaxing so often. This has helped a little, but everywhere I go every stylist says that I have "fine hair". Even the dominican lady who styled my hair yesterday said that my hair is fine. That's why I only had her blow out my roots.

But today when I look at the edges of my hair, it's sooo thin!! Maybe the blowout did this?? My hair is bouncy and moveable, but it is kind of thin looking at times. What can I do to improve this? I'm taking hair vitamins, and I've used Nexxus biotin shampoo, and Nexxus diametress to improve the THICKNESS of my hair, but I've heard that these things are a bunch of crock. Nothing will change your natural hair texture as far as thickness. Either you have it or you don't.

What do you ladies suggest? I don't want to go natural, and my hair IS growing, it's just fine, and there's NOT a lot of it. I mean, I would be fine with it if I had A LOT of "fine" hair on my head. But I have the combination of fine hair and not a lot to begin with. Am I just doomed with fine hair, or is there something else I can try? PLEASE help!! I like to wear my hair down sometimes, and I'm sick of wearing ponytails. But I just feel sooo inferior to those with naturally thicker hair. /images/graemlins/tongue.giferplexed:

Hey CIQ...have you tried pantothenic acid (Vitamin b-5) or Shen-Min, I think. I believe a lot of ladies on the board use (have used) them and had great results with hair thickening...I hope that helps a little bit /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hugs,
Crys

REALLY!!! So, you mean there's hope for me after all? I've heard of Shen Min, and I used to take the pills a while ago, but they didn't do anything for me. Maybe I wasn't taking them often enough. Where do you buy the Shen Min? Can I get this at GNC or Vitamin World?

I've never heard of the pantothenic acid (Vitamin b-5). Where can I find that?

I'll do anything to make my hair thicker. The only though...after I take these pills, will my hair cease to be thick? Or, will it continue to be thick even after taking these supplements?

I'm a 4b with fine hair. The density is thick, but the strands are anorexic. My rollersets fall flat within 2 days.

Solutions:
-Prolong the life and body of your rollerset by sleeping in rollers at night. Ouch!
-Braidouts give volume. I make 3 braids and pin the loose ends around 1 roller. A greasy pomade or coconut oil adds shine.
-I'm on Viviscal and biotin twice daily. That's to boost the growth rate. I take MSM and eat extra protein when I remember to do it. NOTHING has affected how fine my hair is. It's genetic from my dad's side of the family.

Hooray Megon! Bra Strap!!
Can't wait to get back there (my trim was a little agressive). Flaunt it.

I have fine hair too CQ. There are things you should do to adapt. Vits can help for some, but as Megon said when you're genetically inclined there isn't much you can do. A big tip is try not to manipulate when wet. I mean, not much at all. My fine strands snap when wet.

I have fine textured hair and it is one reason why I'm transitioning to natural.

To make it thicker, it all depends on the style. I know when I have worn my hair straight in the past, it would thin. Curly styles like rollersets help make my hair look thicker.

Another thing that has helped with the thickness of my hair is taking vitamins. I have taken hair energizer pills in the past and now take Super B Complex. My hair is much thicker.

HTH!

I know how you feel. Unfortunately I have fine hair too /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif, I have always had fine hair and I have come to terms with the fact that this is what I have and I have to work with what I have /images/graemlins/drunk.gifSo as long as my hair is healthy I don't worry about the thickness. When it was shorter I would wear roller sets and braid outs and I don't get it pressed super straight.

Hi Crystalice - I can totally relate and it is extremely frustrating .. but I think mine's worse cos I don't have enough hair strands ... you know ... like there just aren't enough follicles to cover my scalp!! /images/graemlins/lachen70.gif And forget hair growth rate, mine's in the pits.. but ..
I began using UBH conditioner in Feb and I must say the hair that's growing in is so much fuller than the tips. Of course it's still not full or thick but the difference is glaring. Also I'm natural so my hair looks fuller than it actually is and feels...
I'm learning to accept these things about myself and it has not been easy. I agree with what megonw said - these things may be hereditary ... /images/graemlins/cry3.gif

My hair is very fine also, and the worse thing is manipulation while it's wet. Layers seem to give fine hair more volume and the appearnance of looking thicker.

Thanks for the encouragement ladies. /images/graemlins/clap.gif Yeah, I guess I just have to come to grips with the fact that I have fine hair. /images/graemlins/cry3.gif I hate to say "thin" hair because I associate "thin" hair with balding, or alopecia or hair being damaged. I know I don't have alopecia, and I'm waaaay too young to be balding, and I've reversed a lot of the damage I've done to my hair in the past recent years. But I definitely know that mine is hereditary unfortunately. I'm sure all of the "regular" strength relaxers and braid extentions I've worn in my hair over the past years when I was younger didn't help much either. I didn't know any better. /images/graemlins/cry3.gif I was so silly to go from having braids in my hair for like 3 months (sometimes 4!!!) and then go straight to relaxing it again within 3 or 4 days. OOOOHhhh the horror!! If only I had KNOWN!! /images/graemlins/cry3.gif My poor mother didn't know any better either.

I think I'm going to try these vitamins I hear you all talking about. Where can I buy them?

YOu know, sometimes I actually like when I stretch my relaxer 9, 10, 11 weeks long because I like feeling the thicker curly newgrowth hair that's coming in. It always feels like it's pretty thick, but then when I get a relaxer again, my hair doesn't feel as thick. That's why I'm glad I finally switched to a mild relaxer. Do any of you ladies use mild relaxers? Have you found that this helps?

I've found mild relaxers to help some. I was always afraid that mild relaxers wouldn't get my hair "straight enough" and would thus end up with two textured hair again. Boy, was I wrong!

I've got fine textured hair too. I think that's why I don't get the, "Is that a weave?" questions although people comment about how long hair my hair is all the time. No Oprah head of hair here. Sigh. If I want a fuller look I do braidouts, pincurls, etc.

I feel you on this one. I also have fine hair due to heredity. I have no advice, but just here to let ya know, I feel ya pain girl.

ETA: My thin hair is one of the main reasons why I'm transitioning, to gain any amount of thickness I can get. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have fine hair myself, but I have been using castor oil for a long time, plus with relaxing, my hair would break after two years. Taking Kelp tablets or introducting seaweed into your diet, helps promote thicker strands, also look for vitamin tablets for the hair with a good quality of Pantothenic Acid (B5) or you could buy the tablets crush them and add your conditioners, if you add 1/2 teaspoon of honey, using a teaspoon of shampoo add together and mix in a separate cup and wash your hair, that will help thicken up your hair. Adding a teaspoon of gelatine to your shampoo also thickens up your hair. try this website longhairlovers recipes and they have suggested hair thickners http://www.bbahneycomm.com/cookbook/.
I hope that helps.

I have fine hair in the crown area and I started using Nexxus Biotin Creme and it has filled in. I also take Biotin and a B-5 with a multivitamin. HTH

[/ QUOTE ]girl you have a lot of hair. I love it.

Myh air is thin too. It isn't very dense either. I was going to post a thread like this but decided I might just have to deal with it. When I straighten my hair it is flat before I walk out of the salon. I mean stick straight. Not a hint of curl.

Hey crystal..., I can really relate to what you're going through. I have fine hair that I too inherited from my grandmother. Sometimes I really complain about it. But, look at the bright side: fine hair usually feels soft, has bounce, is easy to manage, etc. I am beginning to accept and love my hair. Also, fine hair does not always mean thin hair, but it usually means easily damaged hair. Check and make sure that there is no hidden damage in your hair. A few months ago I had told myself that my hair was thin because it was fine. But a few months later when my hair grew to be several times thicker, I realized that my fine hair was thin because it was damaged. If your hair is growing in thicker than the ends, that means that there was some breakage. Don't feel frustrated. I had to realize that, because I have fine hair, growing my hair out to any significant length will require a lot of TLC, maybe more than others. I challenge you to protect your hair from chemicals, heat damage, and manipulation by wearing the protective styles that suit you. I really feel that if you do that for a few months, your hair will start to fill in more. Hey, I know that I'll never have extremely thick hair, but whatever God gave me, I'm going to maximize. Good luck.

P.S. Look at my 4 month comparison picture. Remember, a little TLC goes a long way.

I too have fine hair and I haven't figures it out yet. These days I am having good days but roller setting. Thanks for starting this post. It has given some good suggestions!

Hey, thanks you guys. Especially you Sandysea. It seems like we both inherited our "fine" hair from our grandmother! lol* /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Yeah, you're right, "fine" hair usually feels softer. I have relaxed type 4a/b hair, and everyone who feels my hair says: "Ooohhh..it's so soft! How did it get so soft? Do you have a perm in your hair?" So, I guess I can thank my grandmother for that. lol* Her hair was baby-fine cottony soft! lol*

I still don't like the wispy look though! That's why I hate wearing my hair down. Anytime I wear my hair down, I feel like people are looking at my hair. I know the women at work are looking at my hair because it has grown, and I rarely wear it down. So, I guess I feel like some of these women are just looking to find something wrong with my hair, so I'm sure they're noticing that my hair is fine. :-(

I have noticed however that stretching out my relaxers, switching from a "regular" strength relaxer to a "mild" one has done wonders for my hair. Even my stylist said that my hair is thicker at the roots. I feel my hair and I notice that it's a bit thicker at the roots. I just wish sometimes that I could cut my thinner, older, more damaged hair off at the ends and then start all over. But I DO want length!!

Just be patient. What I've been doing is trimming as it grows, I did get rid of the last of the thin hair in september. It looks like you have fine hair that is not naturally thin but thin due to external factors. Keep babying your hair and you may find yourself with a head full of thicker, fine, soft, bouncy, "look at me" hair.

Good luck,
SandySea

I also have baby fine hair that was made even thinner by years of overprocessing. My old stylist was using a regular strength relaxer and was overlapping on top of that. I switched stylists because I was tired of my hair getting thinner and thinner and my new stylist took one look at my hair and told me that it had been overprocessed. When I started getting a mild relaxer my hair looked and felt so much thicker. I also started taking pantothenic acid (B-5) and GNC's Women's Ultra Mega vitamin. Both have helped my hair grow in thicker.

I'm fine haired and I'm now entering week 12 of stretching my relaxer and I'm feeling the same way. I never had my hair out this long/stretched this long before and I'm actually loving the texture of my hair. I've never played with my kitchen hair before!

I just love feeling the softness and the renewed thickness of it from being so thin from the weave just 6 months ago.
I'm actually gonna see if I can stretch the relaxer a bit longer. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I also wanted to add that another thing that has made my hair thicker is staying away from heat! /images/graemlins/wink.gif

ITA. I have learned this over the past year.
