i stopped relaxing my hair just about a year ago. i have about 6 inches of new growth!! but, the sad part is my ends keep breaking i guess because i stopped relaxing my hair. so basically my hair has been the same length for 1 year...imagine w/o the breakage!

so i was wondering does anyone know of any good products that will limit my breakage and products that will make my hair grow faster (hopefully that work well together)? pleeeease someone help me!!! (oh by the way, if this helps i have type 3c/4a hair)

thank u,
Shayna

hey, kookysnkream!!

without really knowing what you do to your hair, i believe it's breaking because it's not getting adequate moisture. the best thing that i've found to alleviate this problem is curl activator. i have my fave brands, but i really don't think that's as important as using one.

let me ask you a few questions:

• how often do you use heat on your hair?

• how do you wear your hair on a daily basis?

• what products do you use for moisture?

the more information you give us, the better we'll be able to help you.

holla!

I gree with Addrienne. I transistion doing rollersets and just rinsing daily(during the summer). The main thing was keeping my hair moist. Which meant water first followed by something to seal the moisture in. Also when I rollerset I used to keep the 2 textures as similar as possible by using a tempoary straightening balm on the roots. But if you are having breakage on the ends then it is definitly not enough moisture. What is your regime now? Whatever you use for moisture...if you are using it on dry hair it won't be as effective as if you rinse or dampen your hair with water first. I used distilled water when I rinse and in a misting bottle(mixed with jojoba oil).

kookies n cream have u considered takin any supplements to aid in hair growth coz i kno my hair and a lot of other ladies here included, have experienced a lot of hair growth as a result of takin them supplemets, try a search ont hem coz the board has a lot of info regardin vits

this discussion is open to everyone!! help me please. lol

to adrienne: i use heat on my hair about once a month, or once every other month. but usually, after i wash my hair, i put redken anti-snap leave-in conditioner in my hair and comb it back in a ponytail. and thats how i have it for the rest of the week or in the middle of the week, take out the pony and put it in a bun...lol. i dont really mess with it. any suggestions?? cuz i mean, also, i'm really upset because i used to be able to wear it down curly, but now that the new growth is much curlier than the processed part, it looks not right!!! lol.

to sweetcocoa: so u just rollerset it when its wet, and take it out in the morning?? about the whole water thing, i think it makes me hair a bit dry too...but maybe i should try wetting it and then some product??

to ngaa: i've really thought about taking supplements, like that ulta hair thick shake thingy sounds really good, but i dunno, i'm just scared like something will go wrong. like if i were to stop using it my hair would fall out or something. haha...i get paranoid like that. is there a certain type of supplement that u would recommend??

I noticed you said water made your hair dry out? Since I just started this (only last night) I would strongly suggest you also try using distilled water. You MAY have hard water at home which over time just makes your hair drier and makes any product applied after have to work doubly hard (if at all in my case for last week).

Redken Anti-Snap made my hair dry out. Does it work very well for you? Alot of girls enjoy using s-curl (also recc'd by Adrienne) which does moisturize air dried hair nicely and help re-growth. Also moisturizing conditioners like Motions Moisture Plus and Elucence help detangle and soften the hair well.

Hope others help you further!

yeah u know i noticed that Redken Anti-Snap did make my hair a lil dry! arg...i cant return it now. i hate buyin products then u cant return them! lol. i heard aphogee was good? has anyone tried this?? does it help breakage? thanx for the advice brownrelaxed!! i think i'm going to try the distilled water thing. do u use it everyday?? and the s-curl...just get like a leave-in conditioner of it?

Kooky,

I only used distilled water for the first time last night. I plan to use it every time I wash my hair which is approx 3 x a week or more if I do the gym alot. Even at the gym I'm going to bring a bottle with me for the final rinse.

I heard the Anti Snap was good but it was crap for me. I swapped it away. If your looking for a leave in, I'd seriously consider getting Elucence Moisture Balance Conditioner. Like I said it detangles well and can be used as a leave in too as it is so you can use it, rinse out then put some back in and let the hair dry with it in. The s-curl is used whenever you air dry. After washing, just spray it throughout and style as normal, bun, braid out, whatever. As the hair dries it STAYS softer and moisturized. Try it

The aphogee has different strengths.I've never used the powerful version that makes the hair go hard. Others here have. Some give good results. Some don't. Its for serious uncontrollable shedding and breaking. I used to like using the 2 minute version that doesn't make the hair harden. It helped stop shedding alot and made the hair stronger. Always follow a protein conditioner with a moisturizing one in the same session though as protein dries the hair out. My all time fave though is Aubrey Organics GPB which I just discovered this year. Its an effective protein conditioner that actually moisturizes the hair in one go. Its fantastic and is the only one that doesn't have to follow with a separate moisturizing conditioner. It detangles well too. Do a search on this and you'll read what others think. I strongly rec. this

You may also want to consider pre oil treatments on the hair ends to help elimate drying. This helps ALOT. A current fave for me is extra virgin olive oil mixed with coconut oil. Leave on hair for as long as you can 1 hour to over night. Then shampoo and condition your hair as normal after. If you check the hair recipe 'page' of this board you'll see a list of pre oil recipes posted by CarmenRose too. I've heard good things about VO5 oil treatment but I like the idea of using 'home made' 100% natural ingredients.

i just looked at ur picutres...damn girl!! ur hair is so beautiful!! how often do u press your hair? so basically, Elucence is used when u press ur hair and s-curl when u air dry?? i can get most of these products at sally's right(or a typical beauty salon)? so do u think that aubrey is better than aphogee? by the way, do u use any type of supplements?

Thanks for the compliment! No Elucence is a regular rinse out conditioner used when you wash your hair, not for pressing the hair in particular. You can use it whether you hot style your hair after or not. Its just a reg. conditioner used in the shower that also doubles as a leave-in. S-Curl I find is best used on hair when you want to 'wash and go' and air dry yes, following with no heat or anything.

Scurl you can get everywhere. Drugstores sell it. Its the 'no drip' one white bottle blue writing. Elucence is only avail online. I keep forgetting the name of the website. Someone please remind me!?

Supplement wise I take MSM,biotin,b5, & Multi. Also a tablespooon of flax oil each day.

I do rollarsets approx once or twice out of the month. The rest of the time I airdry with a braidout. Depends on how I feel.

u know, i find rollersets sooooo hard to do! lol. because of my new growth, which is pretty curly, when i roll it and sit under the drier, just makes waves. i'm like "NO! STRAIGHT!!!" i dunno, ppl tell me ur hair's gotta be "trained" to do it? maybe so? so sad how i have to resort to a blow drier and a curling iron. haha. but thank u soooo much for the help! but yeah, once u find out the website for elucence, hook it up girl! lol. oh, what does flax oil do anyway?

Allandra just posted the link for where to buy Elucence.

Flax oil is an EFA essential fatty acid. Its good for hair skin nails, lowering cholesterol levels, a whole slew of things. Do a google search on it

I found that ditching curling irons and blowdrying was above all THE best thing I did for my hair to stop it breaking. No matter what products you use, the breakage will continue or stay the same if your hair is reacting badly to the continued heat. You may want to consider having a rollar set done at a Dominican salon. They're the masters at it and you can see first hand how they do it and how your hair turns out.

Good luck!

Kookysnkream,

I didn't read all the replies to your post, so I'm not sure anyone mentioned sealing your ends. This in done by putting the oil of your choice on the ends of you hair, (peferably on clean hair), and wrapping in foil, then pressing with a flat iron. Do in sections, works wonders.

P.S. Best done right after washing and conditioning. Hair should be slightly damp. Sorry I forgot to add this before.

a dominican salon?? sound real nice, but i wouldnt know where to start to look for that out here in southern cali because we dont have too many dominicans out here. but i'm gonna look up the flax oil though. i read up about the aphogee treatment that hardens...sounds kinda dangerous. lol. like if u were to touch it while its hard, ur hair will break or something. hum
