Ok i have been going to a beautician that i do like, i spent probably about 45 bucks going every week for about 4 years. When she does my hair she gets it bone straight root to end, and my hair seems so silky. I have noticed breakage of all lengths of my hair when i go cause she does flat iron, no roller setting. I decided several months ago i wanted to grow my hair back after i lost lots of length do to coloring, relaxing and cutting. Im determined to get my hair healthy and long like it was. My dilema is when my hair was at its longest which was below APL, it was at the time i was doing it myself, wet setting, relaxing, the whole nine. I know the money i spend weekly i could invest in a good hood hair dryer, and maybe a steamer too. Im trying to decided should i go back to doing my own hair like i used to, or keep going to my beautician and i cant make up my mind. Anyone have any advice? Im open to hear all opinions.

The Do It Yourself-ers seem to have some of the greatest hair here! Have you ever reached your hair goals w/ her?

$45 a week?
$2520 a year?

girl, you would be sooo rich when you retire if you were investing that money in stocks or something instead of giving the hairdresser. I vote for doing it yourself.

It can be intimidating to try to do it on your own. but maybe you can cut it down to seeing her every other week, instead of every week. that way , you can learn your hair and build confidence. then progress to seeing her once a month etc etc.

She might try to scare you and tell you that your hair will fall off if you don't come in every week. Don't believe her. Believe in yourself (my stylist tried something like that before i earned my independence).

you might have a small set back here and there, but you'll learn from it and get better. DIY!

If you can do your hair yourself and you retain length better when it's under your care, there's no discussion here. You should do it.

and DAG $45 a week!!!

Dude, do you know how much exotic oil and other concoctions I would buy with that?

Seriously, I was where you are now, and I have actually found it more rewarding to DIY. I know I can take better care of my hair than my stylist, and I feel like with a little research and trial-and-error I can make products better and cheaper than retail.

Ditto to everyone! I actually started doing my hair myself because of all the damage I was experiencing from my former hairdresser... not to save any money, because it was only $15 or so dollars a week. Saving the money was an added perk! I don't self relax or trim because that is too daunting. I can say that my hair is in its best condition ever! If nothing else, I get to feel how my hair reacts to certain products allowing me to learn what my hair likes and doesn't. Now that I have perfected this roller setting thing, I get better results than at the "doobie" shop. Plus it's fun!

If you know how to self-relax and rollerset, why are you even going??
If I could self relax, I would never go to a hairdresser! You are making that lady rich with 45$ a week. Do it yourself! Buy an awesome steamer, an awesome dryer and other awesome supplies and take care of that hair. If your hair has already thrived with your hands, just do it yourself!
:yep:

Looks like u answered ur own question: It was better when it was in your care!!! And if she starts to tell you lies like its all going to fall out then she's wrong and shouldn't coax you just for the money and not the health of your hair

I do it all except trim (which I"m praying for the courage to begin dusting myself sometime this year) and relax...but everything else I do myself, baby! I am becoming a DIYer and I save money as a result.

Since you have the skills to do your own hair, I'd take that money and use it to purchase high quality products and tools to maintain and grow your own hair.

WOW! Ladies yall are telling me the truth and i know it. I guess i needed a nudge to move back to doing it myself, and i have no excuse, i know how to rollerset my hair and i can do it at my leisure. I guess i got so used to not doing it myself that i didnt know if i should go back to it. But im really motivated by this forum and as mentioned, everyone that i have seen with beautiful, healthy, long hair seems to have acheived their goals by doing their hair themselves. Well ladies i need to get my supplies in order. I have been reading about the Pibbs 510 or 514 so i guess i will invest in that first. By the way that was one of my pet peeves, sitting under the dryer for over an hour, i used to hate it but from what i read this dryer is excellent. I appreciate all your advice, thanks so much, and anyone else that wants to give their opinion please keep em coming.
