Help Needed for Correcting Under Processed Hair

Hi Ladies,

I purposly under processed my first relaxer after coming out of my braids to help prevent damage. My hair is really healthy now, I've been alternating between deep conditioning and protein treatments and avoiding heat.

Now I'm working out like a champ, about 5 days per week and my hair is constantly getting wet, needing Con washing or washing. I look like a fuzzy puff ball when I try to air dry because my hair isn't straight. I'm am getting tempted to pull out the ole flat iron for a smoother look. That's telling me that I need to relax my hair straighter, because if is was straighter, I could do the sweating and washing with out worrying about the poof. :) This helps me avoid the need to use heat.

My question is has anyone self corrected their underprocess relaxer? My thought was to do a good protein conditoner a few days before, use light protein during the relaxing phase along with deep moisture and then monitor to see when I need moisture or protein as a I go from there.

If I didn't work out and sweat all the time this wouldn't be an issue, I don't really mind my hair under processed otherwise.

I'm using Silk Elements Mild and I was planning to add olive oil to help dilute the strength a little further. My hair is fine and it relaxes quickly. My thought was to focus first on the roots and then pull the relaxer through the rest of my hair excluding my ends for the last 5 - 7 minutes of the process. Then I'll do the light protein before the neturilizer. I remember a beautican that used to so something simular and my hair was so pretty after her touch-ups. It didn't have that crunchy dull after relaxer look when she did it. I never knew that was the trick until I came to this site!

Let me know what you think... I am also intrested to know how work out warriors handle their air as well.

Thanks!!

Hi JJ,

I took my braids out in August 2006 after having them in for a year. I relaxed with PhytoRelaxer Index 2 the first week of August. The left side of my head was underprocessed, the back part severely. It was so bad that even the flat iron didn't do much.

So I did a corrective six weeks later. I applied it to my roots first and then applied to the underprocessed parts, starting with the most severely underprocessed parts. With Phyto you really have to smooth the hair so that's what I did for the remaining time.

After neutralizing, I used the Aphoghee Damage Treatment immediately because I was afraid of causing damage from the corrective relaxer. I probably should have waited because afterwards I came across some posts that said that doing a protein treatment right after your relaxer could cause reversion. I think this is what happened to me because I still had curl pattern in my hair. I could have sworn that everything was straight when I went to neutralize. But I'm happy that it's still slightly underprocessed because I can get it straight by applying my butters and air-drying in a ponytail or flat-ironing around 160 degrees with butters/serum in my hair.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much, that's exactly my situation, relaxing hair that only likes braids. I have read that you can do a light protein that lowers your hair's Ph right before your neutrizlier. Ultra Sheen Duo Tex was recommended. Your plan the way you described it is exactly what I will do. I'll wait.. with baited breath until after the Holloween. That will be about 6 weeks. I know how to condition it correctly so I'm confident that if I don't over process I'll be okay.

Thanks for your reply :)
