I am seriously considering a relaxer and I'm in a dilemma. I have been natural for 1 year and 3 months and my hair has grown quite a bit. My protective style included sew-ins all the time but now they are too hot for me and I live in Texas so the hotness and humidity is not what's up. I be sweating bricks and hot all the time with that extra hair. I have tried to survive without a relaxer by putting a sew-in recently, but I took it out in less than 3 days up to 4 times in a two week period because of the hotness.
I know I can do some natural styles but I don't think I would look too up to par with them. Plus, my hair is about 6-7 inches long and I don't prefer shrinkage or braidouts and prefer the straight look. When I try to flat iron my hair, it will only stay straight for about 6 hours before it poofs back up.
I am asking anyone if they know of any alternatives before I relax again. This is really irritating and I want a cute style for my hair without damaging it that I can easily maintain daily. However, I will consider relaxing again if I have to. Please help me out if you have had this problem before or know of a solution.

I live in Texas and I know how hot it is. Why don't you try a very short sew-in like a bob style? I think you should look into senegalese twists, you may like them.

I will look into the Senegalese twists but I've tried a bib, a short QuickWeave and all... I'm thinking about individual braids so my scalp can breathe. I think my scalp doesn't like to be covered now for sone reason

I would say just wearing your natural hair out would be the best idea...you can get to your scalp easily & wash whenever...but if you really dont wanna wear your hair out I would suggest some type of braids...i would say senagelese twists, kinky twists, box braids or other braided styles.

Thanks ladies... I am considering box braids and I will google Senegalese twists... Don't make fun of me because I don't know what they look like. lol

Not that I am advocating any chemicals at all but, before you consider a relaxer why not try a texturizer? That way you can have the best of both worlds.

I think you should go on and relax it. You CAN have healthy relaxed hair. Wearing your hair shouldn't be that stressful.

If your natural hair is too difficult for your lifestyle then relax your hair.

:yep: I was about to say this! For the entire year and couple months you have been natural, you have hidden it under weave and wigs, plus you state you don't like wearing braidouts or shrinkage and you prefer to wear your hair straight. Unfortunately if your natural hair texture is in the 4s (and some 3s as well) you are going to have to deal with shrinkage and poofiness every time you get it wet or are faced with any type of humidity.

It probably cost you just as much (if not more) to upkeep your wig and weave hairstyles than if you just relaxed and called it a day.

Just get braids. But from the sounds of it you really need to familiarise yourself with your natural hair and learn to style it. Search for natural bun threads. Also, search YouTube for natural styles. It would be a shame to go back to the relaxer now.

You could try to heat train your hair or just go ahead and relax it since you don't like natural styles.

I can't tell you what to do with your hair but I do know Texas is haaaaaaaaaawt. Last time I was there, I got my sis to hook up my hair with some cornrows. Cornrows with a phony pony or a short half wig gives you a cute style without alot of maintenance. You can switch up hair pieces depending on the look you want. I wore my hair in a full fro and now that it's longer... omg it held soooo much heat. :nono: I can't do straight hair without alot of prep/product during the summer.

I'm sure you'll find a way to rock what makes you happy. :yep:

Individual braids sound like a good idea. Or heat training. There are a few heat training threads on here.

I think you should give natural styles a chance. I've never seen anyone who didn't look cute with a braidout.

If you are in Houston, you can try Zayd's or Natural Resources for help with natural styling or The Root Of You for natural hair straightening. I got my hair done at The Root Of You last week and they have lots of stylists that can get natural hair bone straight.

I know what you mean about the heat. Stretching was easy when I lived in DC, but humidity is a killer in Texas.

Go ahead and relax your hair. From reading what you wrote, you are not happy being natural. Why go through life being unhappy about something you CAN control.

I agree with those who suggest relaxing IF you truly aren't comfortable with wearing your natural hair out. Heat training is about the only option if only want to wear your hair straight without relaxing. While products like Sabino's Lok & Blok HELP keep your hair straight as a natural, nothing is completely foolproof when dealing with heavy sweating and humidity.

Thank u ladies for your support. Right now I bought some synthetic braiding hair and I will try this for more growth in the next 2 months.. After that if I have the same problem then I will relax

Before you relax again, I suggest you take a look at your siggy....

"My 3rd BC in April 2010! I believe my hair is allergic to relaxers, so let's start over for the 3rd time ! I'm tired of playing hair games with these relaxers "

Your words....

Good point OP if youre allergic to relaxers then you'll have to find alternate ways to wear your hair until you can master flat ironing or heat training either DIY or a stylist and some good anti humidiy products.
Alot of people are allergic to relaxes perms hair color fruit even so even if you Texlax or texturize your hair if you're allergic no matter how much good care you give it dc protein no heat it will still break off and you'll still have scalp burns. Consider that if you are allergic to relaxers you have no choice but to stay natural and make if work. Ita braids are the wayto go if you want to HYH for a while and it's hot outside and it's sports proof. Make sure they don't broad too tight and wash detangle your hair yourself before you go so they don't rake it out. Hth

Cosigning on working with your OWN hair first. You may actually love how versatile your natural hair is. Believe me, I was self-consious about my hair when I BC'd last year. I began to experiment and I started to love how my hair looked. You're a beautiful sista and I think natural styles would look great on you.

However, if you still want to wear extensions, I would suggest box braids or Senegalese twists (I love Senegalese Twists).

I hear you about the heat! How about rollersetting? You can create cute styles with rollers at that length, I know I did! And wear accessories, plain or not, doesn't matter, it will add something to the style.

It sounds like your issue with natural styles is the length of your hair right now. You have to be patient. Try the braids and repeat after a break. Wait until you have some more length then decide. You may like your braiouts more when it has more hang. Try every other option before you relax again. Or you may be back to BC again. Be persistent and stick with something or you are just going to do the sqame cycle or relax, overprocess and BC again.

Be careful with synth hair. I found that it matted and locked up my natural hair. If you have used it in the past without issue, good luck.

Also, please explain why you think you are allergic to relaxer yet considering going back for a third time (based on your signature).

Ok ladies I did my braid extensions by myself and they look superb and my scalp feels good... I decided not to relax at all thanks to all of you. I will continue to wear braid extensions until my hair reaches 10 inches. I will be conditioning with Infusium 23 daily. I am not hot either. Plus, you ladies are right, I have been through the natural-relaxed roller coaster 3 times and it would be ludacris to go through it over again. I wish I can add a pic but I'm posting from my iPod

I live in TX and the first thing I would say is the water here is hard (and hard on my hair). Do you have a water filter on your shower head? If not, you should invest in one, bc it will make a difference as to how your hair reacts to products and looks when styled.

Second thing is a TWA might be a cute style you could live with even though it's not straight. Have you tried a WnG shingled with Knot Today and KCCC? That heped me when I was running out of styling options and my hair was looking a hot mess...

I bc'd in texas too, so I know how it feels. Gnad you found something that works for you. I just cowashed daily and di the tightly curly method. I just wore puffs, when winter hit I braided up and it seemed like my hair grew overnight. Keep it up with the braids you will be pleasently surprisede
