I love coconut oil...and use it daily. A lot of people use the Amla Oil as a wash out. My mother uses it as a moisturizer once a week...and her hair is comming along nicely.

felicia,

Dabur suggests that leave the Amla oil in your hair for an hour or so and wash it out. Kind of like a pre shampoo/conditioning treatment. Along with the Amla oil.. it also contains Mineral Oil...Vegetable Oil...Peanut Oil Cottonseed Oil...color...butyl hydroquinone...it's also perfumed...and contains a few other additives.

The coconut oil would be better if you are looking for a daily oil/moisturizer.

Have you ever used Amla oil before? I know that I personally did not like smell. My mom said it smelled like "Old Lady perfume". I would buy the coconut oil if I had to decide between the two. If you can find a local Indian Grocer, amla powder is really cheap. Usually under $3. Then you could mix that with your coconut oil for occasional wash out treatments and still have coconut oil for daily use.

I personally don't like the smell of alma oil, like some of the ladies. I love my coconut oil! 7.19 dollars for 12 ounces. I use it as a pretreatment and a shine enhancer!

coconut oil?

What type of coconut oil do you all use? is it in a liquid form? do you get it at a BSS or a health store?

coconut oil

i vote for coconut oil.
I use pure coconut oil, unrefined. It is solid unless it is warm in the room, in which case it will liquefy. I haven't seen it pure at any BSS, only the Indian or Halal grocer or the healthfood store.
It's cheaper at the halal/indian stores, so do a search for "halal store" or "indian grocer" in your area.

Re: coconut oil

Thanks for the info about the coconut oil. Is better to apply it to your hair in solid or liquid form?

Re: coconut oil

I saw and read the Alma product today, I was going to buy it until it said on the packet that continued use will make hair darker, if a product has the power to alter the colour of your hair and its not supposed to, I would not and did not buy it.

Re: coconut oil

Coconut oil will melt at body temperature. So in the jar it might be solid, but once you scoop it out and rub it around in your hands, it will melt into a liquid. So it will work for you both ways.

Re: coconut oil

I've used both and both are good, but I agree w/the majority, coconut oil. The Indian oils have a stronger smell and oil seems to just sit on the hair. It's good oil but it seems to be watery and thinner, so I use it way too fast. I think coconut oil has been better for my hair. Make sure it smells like coconut, that way you can tell that its unrefined if the label happens not to be in English. Coconut oil is much cheaper and higher quality if purchased @ an Indian store too.

Re: coconut oil

Is the coconut oil you can get at the indian grocery stores unrefined? I thought that all forms of the oil made for cooking was refined to some extent?

Re: coconut oil

They don't cook w/coconut oil, coconut milk, but not oil. At least none of the Indian people I know do. Coconut oil is usually found in the section w/the Dabur and hair oils.

Re: coconut oil

Myco,

Thanks for the info on the coconut oil. Nowthat I know how to use it, I just have to find it.

Re: coconut oil

Sengchick,

thanks for the info on coconut oil. I went to an Indian store nearby me....the only coconut oil I saw was by 'Parachute'. I read on this board that Parachute's coconut oit is refined. So I'm still searching. Do you know of any unrefined brands that you could recommend?

Re: coconut oil

I use Spectrum Organics, which I picked up at a local health food store, b/c I didn't feel like driving out to the Indians. But the one that's unrefined is for cooking. They make another for hair and body that's refined. I've used the refined w/o adverse effect as well, but I know it's not recommended by some here.

Same here. I love the Parachute coconut oil...and I have never had any drying effects with it.
