Help! I\'m 4A

I'm new to the site and I'm not sure how to get info about starting a regimen. How exactly do I get information? Is there written material I need to purchase? And who is this Andre person everyone talks about? According to this site my hair type is 4A. Can someone guide me along?

Re: Help! I\'m 4A

rythim: although i'm not an "old tymer" someone who has been a member for a long time. when i first joined in may the first thing i did was take a weekend to read all of the past post and i started from there.

the girls here are so helpful i don't think you'll have to that. being a 4a like myself, the first thing i would do is buy a good moisturizing shampoo and condidtioner; i use loreal natures therapy moisturizing shampoo and i've just discovered garnier fructis fortifying 3min. deep conditioner.
i would also purchase a daily protein shampoo and conditioner that i would use on a bi-weekly basis (one week moisturizing, one week light protein) i use nexxus kerraphix protein conditioner (always followed by the moisturizing conditioner) and i'm still on the lookout for a good protein shampoo. people seem to like motions cpr products. i would also do a reconstructive protein treatment at least every wks. i use aphogee treatment (always follow by a moisturizing conditioner) also i would up my washing to twice weekly, or at least once a week. i would use oil instead of greases made with mineral oil. (the validity of that is debated, it depends on your hair) i like kemi oil for my ends and at one with nature itchy scalp oil for my scalp....
i'm sure there's more advice but thats all i know so far

lol oh and someone recommended to stay away from scossor happy hair stylist!!!

Re: Help! I\'m 4A

Welcome Rythim! The best way to get information is to read old posts and also search for your topic of interest using the Search feature. You can create your own regimen by seeing what others do and taking what you want from that.

To get started, you should have a gentle shampoo, a good conditioner that will detangle, a deep conditioner to strengthen, moisturizer (product with water as the main ingredient), and a satin scarf to sleep in.

An important aspect of attaining healthy hair is a clean scalp. Aim to wash your hair at least once a week, and rinse with conditioner by itself a couple times a week.

I'm assuming your relaxed? Give us as many details as you can about your hair's condition right now and people will be able to give you specific answers. There is so much info!

Re: Help! I\'m 4A

Hi Rithim, before I found this wonderful board, I got my intro to caring and growing 4A/B hair from Cathy Howse's book and website www.ubhpublications.com You can get most of the info in her book from her website, esp the FAQ page. It may also help you understand what it is you don't quite understand or need clarifying in so you know what to search for on this forum. There are other books mentioned on the booklist of this forum that might be good intros too.

I also found the Pantene website a great source of info not just for black hair care but hair care in general. Also if you ask specific questions on this forum (like "why is my hair breaking"...stating how you care for your hair now and what condition your hair is in now and what your goals/hopes are...we may be able to point you to the threads that hold the answers for you.

Re: Help! I\'m 4A

Thank you ladies soooooo much for your input. My hair is shoulder length right now. It comes out alot when I run my fingers through it or comb it. My hair is pretty dry and the edges are very short( I just make it "baby hair"). I also have thinning or bald spot on one side. It's very thick but I want it down my back. Is that really possible for someone with my hair type (4A)? I also have trouble swallowing pills.

Re: Help! I\'m 4A

Hey Rythim! Well, I'm sorry to hear about the thinning spots. You might want to try Profectiv
Anti-Thinning Circulation Stimulant http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.j...&navCount=0

or Nioxin follicle booster. http://www.nioxin.com/nioxin_products/ni...&v=benefits

Also you might want to make your own treatment with castor oil, jojoba oil,or vitamin e oil, and a couple of drops of peppermint or rosemaray essential oil.

Also do scalp massages to stimulate thinning areas.

Do a search on everything I mentioned.

For the dryness, keep your hair moisturized with water-based products and drink plenty of water.
