Ladies, I have a little dilemma. I normally relax my hair every 16 weeks, but during weeks 12-16 the new growth gets kinda thick, and my hair just doesn't look as nice...

OK. My BF and I booked a cruise on the spur of the moment and we'll be leaving on June 24th, for 8 nights. On that week I'll be 12 weeks since last relaxer.

My question is this... Do you think I should get my touchup before I go on the cruise so that I can enjoy nice straight roots during my vacation, or should I wait until after I get back to do it, and stay on my 16 week schedule??

I'm leaning towards sticking with my schedule and waiting, cuz after the touchup my hair may be more fragile and since I'll be in the water at the pool and the beach, maybe I should hold off. I don't want to go on vacation and wreck my hair that I've worked so hard on for the past year!!

TIA!!

Lindy I would wait because I wouldn't want to get in pol water after I've got a touchup. The chlorine in the water could wreck havock on your hair.

Question for ya: If you DON'T get a touch up before leaving, how will you wear your hair? And will you be comfortable w/how you wear it after getting it wet, sweaty, etc...?

Hey Lindy,,,what about some nice head wraps or head bands. They are a quick fix and very regal looking...Or even a long silk scarf folded up until it can be tied up into a head band. A lot of women where I work do that to cover their generous new growth until they can get the next touch up....I have been sporting head wraps for two weeks now, and I get more compliments now than when I was wearing my hair out.... I have several different head wraps to match my wardrobe.:(

I'd relax, enjoy my cruise, my man, and my hair! Ya only get one life to live, and I would wanna look GOOD while I'm enjoying mine.

it might not be a good idea to get your hair in pool water with two different hair textures either. I would relax.

If u dont want to relax, use Sherrylove's suggestion and also don't get your hair wet in the pool.

Lindy I think's it unanimous - DON'T DO IT. WAIT. Why don't you get some cornrows, that way you won't have to mess with it at all. Whenever I vacation that's my 'do' of choice

Thanks for posting this. Lindy I am in the same perdicament... I am going to Miami July 4th weekend... Right now I am 4 weeks post relaxer and my new-growth is already crazy... I don't know if I should hold out or relaxer either. I don't plan on swimming, but my boyfriend is a jokester..

Thanks ladies... I like Sherry's suggestion about head wraps/headbands. That really is a great way to camoflauge (sp) new growth!!

Sigh... I'm still going back and forth... on one hand I would love to have straight roots but since I DO want to enjoy myself in the water for once in my life (I had Lasik eye surgery last year and don't have to wear contacts anymore...

and don't have to worry about losing them in the water...) so I want to experience what I've been missing!!

So, like someone else said, the chlorine/salt water could wreak havoc on freshly retouched hair...

Jeez.

I'm nixing the cornrow idea. I've just never been a "braids person"... I'm very tenderheaded and I also would be afraid for my hairline...

If I DON'T get it relaxed, I'm planning on just wearing my hair in a twistout most days... other days, a wet bun, or the wet 'n wavy. I figure I will be spending a lot of time with wet hair anyhow!!

My new growth isn't that out of control... I'm just worrying because my hair is harder to handle (detangling, etc.) with this amount of growth...

Definitely wait for the relaxer. BUt I think you should consider getting a nice wet and wavy sew in weave. That's my plan for my summer vacation @ the beach. This way you can go swimming, wash the hair daily and still have a nice style with no fuss. It gives you more time to relax and enjoy your cruise

good idea

I think the hair scarves were a good suggestion too. IMO messy hair always gives off a tropical island appeal

Don't relax before. I'd bring some headwraps and do some twist & braid outs and the wash n go.
Stick to your 16 week regimin & just relax when scheduled.

Lindy, girl, you got me (and I am sure some of the other ladies as well)so curious as to how you are going to sport your hair during your vacation. Would you mind sharing some pics with us????

If you decide not to relax - give Suave Awapuhi a try as a leave-in after you wash your hair on your trip. It's an excellent detangler and makes hair shiny. I can see why you're torn but if you can come up with some cute styles to wear, I wouldn't relax.

Well ladies, I'm back from the cruise, and everything went GREAT with my hair!!
smile.gif
I had NO problems, at all!! On the days I went to the beach, I just came back and condition washed my hair and did the wash 'n go (since I knew I'd be getting it wet again anyway, the next day). If I wasn't going in the water the next day, I'd twist it up at night before going to bed, and I wore a twist-out the next day.

It was SOOO nice to be able to go in the water at the beach and get my hair wet and not have to worry about what I was gonna do with it later on!!! This is a FIRST for me... I would always struggle not to get my hair wet at the beach/pool... and of course, that = NO FUN!!!

This was the BEST vacation EVER!!!

Glad you had a fun trip!

I was gonna suggest doing braidouts but

guess you don't need the advice anymore.
