Greetings All...I'm a NEWBIE here and I am in DESPERATE need of some help!! I've been reading this site for quite some time and I decided last night to give my hair a DC and doing a roller set. Well..ladies and gentlemen..when I tell you that it did not turn out quite the way I had hoped, I'm not kidding.

Ok..so I took the curlers out and my hair was sooooooooo poffie..I looked like Mrs. Puff from Spongebob:blush: So, I did the "saran wrap" thing and it went from bad to worse. Not only does it feel "waxy" and "heavy" but I had to use both a flat iron (which doesn't do anything for my hair) and a curling iron to get it a little straight and even with that I had to put it up in a bun. YIKES!!! Help! help! help!

:lachen: :lachen: @ the title!!

But seriously. . .:needpics:

Also more info. What products do you use? What did you do step by step?

OK...sorry I don't have any pics right now. I'm working on it--don't have a camera yet.

My hair stats: Shoulder length, VERY, VERY, VERY thick, last relaxer was done in early November...it grows very fast.

Products used: For the DC---I used Queen Helene w/Ginseng Conditioning/Strengthening Cream--Wet hair, saturated hair with DC, put on cap & sat under dryer for about 1 hour. Rinsed out...(did not use any other product to wash hair--FIRST MISTAKE??)..just rinsed it out. While prepping hair for roller set..used Aphogee ProVitamin Leave-In Conditioner & Water to roller set my hair. Sat under the dryer 4-EVER!!! Slept in the curlers OUCH!!

Took curlers out...hair was very, very poffie and my new growth was very, very visible. Bc I wanted to try the "saran wrap" I sprayed a little bit of Elasta QP H-Two Leave In Moisture SEaling Conditioning and put on their Mango Butter Moisturizer...wrapped my hair and sat under dryer for 10 mins. It went from BAD 2 WORSE... extremely puffy and felt waxy.

At that point I had no choice but to flat iron (with a HUGE Gold n' Hot flat iron) and a curling iron--which it was a little better..but it feels very waxy, very heavy and looks dull still.

I promise..i'll work on those pics real soon. Maybe I can use my cell phone

Dull and waxy sound like buildup. You may need to start by shampoo the old product out and be sure you rinse that conditioner out thoroughly next time.
Clean hair will not be dull and waxy. Do you have time to start over?

did you shampoo? it sounds like there is some kind of build up on your hair.

Hmmm okay. When I DC my hair, I only do it on wash/co-wash days. I shampoo, use a rinse out condish/or some type of reconstructor, THEN DC. On those days I rollerset, I use a setting lotion of some type (like Proclaim). I may add water to it, but I don't use a leave-in (esp. a protein one) to rollerset. Maybe you can but I never have so I'm gonna assume that's maybe one reason. Also, I don't think you should be sitting under the dryer so long, then sleeping in the rollers and then doing a saran wrap with even more product. Mango butter is very heavy if you use too much as well.

My advice to you would be to call it a loss and just start all over. Clarify and shampoo to get all that product out your hair, then maybe use the ORS replenishing pak for a DC and try again with some type of setting lotion (I heard good things about Lottabody watered down) and serum (I use Biotherapy or Biosilk...something like that lol). Set the dryer for about 40 minutes and then check/adjust time accordingly. But if your hair is SL, it shouldn't take too much longer. After THAT, try the saran wrap minus product or just a very lil wrap lotion and see what happens.

OK..so it seems like I should have "washed out" the conditioner with a shampoo (which I didnt do) and I wont use the "leave in" as a roller set lotion either...second mistake. YIKES!!! The mango butter is EXTREMELY heavy and my hair can't take products that heavy. Do you have any suggestions on a similar product that does the same thing but is lighter?

I'll redo on Saturday and take your advice. I think the biggest issue right now for me to not use too many products. I cant do heavy but need much moisture.

Thank you guys sooo much for your advice and help. I'm sure I'll be needing your assistance again real soon. Just starting out and wanting to get my hair in good condition and longer.

No, no, no. Don't wash out the condish with a shampoo. Just make sure you clarify and/or shampoo before hand. You just rinse the DC out.

OK....got it. Won't wash out with shampoo...but wash B4 I DC...and rinse, rinse, rinse. I'm gonna get this thing straight real soon.

It may be a little poofy being that your last relaxer was in November. When rollersetting try to use as little product as possible. Your hair feels waxy because you used the Elasta QP Mango Butter. This product I know for a fact is very heavy because sometimes I use it to keep my edges down. Try to flatiron only the roots after you take the rollers down. When you saran wrap it try using CHI Silk Infusion to get it smooth & silky, it always work for me. HTH!

Yeah..that Elasta Mango Butter stuff was soooo heavy on my hair it was awful. I'm going to rewash tomorrow and try it all over again.

Thank you for your advice. Prayerfully the roller set will come out much, much better this time.

Welcome!

Good luck with your next attempt. I'm sure you'll have better luck! I have a loose texture (2c/3a hair) which rollersets pretty easily... but it still took FOREVER to get it right. I still don't have it perfected.

By the way, your title is HILARIOUS :lachen:!
