I need to understand what hair type I have. I am reading the various hair types that are now posted on the board and I thought I was sort of a type three but I don't think that is right and it does not seem like I fit anywhere /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Can some help me. I have Indian and some scottish ancestry. My roots grow in very soft and sometimes are hardly visible. I have naturally thick hair, that when properly cared for is shiney and has alot of bounce. When wet, my hair goes into little ringlets sort of like a jerry curl. I could almost just put some activator in it and it would be fine except that it gets frizzy if I let it dry like that. Even though thick, my hair seems to be really delicate. I don't think I am type 4 but I am just not sure.

This is so frustrating.../images/graemlins/confused.gif

You can have a mix of hair. I'm sure someone will post the alternative hair classification for you. I think on this site, it's the Andre walker system.

My friend also had that ringlet curl when she washed her hair. Her hair for the most part was not as curly as a type 4. She says she is a type 3cii. I'm not sure what that is at all.

NAY007 may help you because she is a type 3 and she has fabulous hair.

Julia you sound like a 3 to me, either a 3B or 3C. What diameter are your natural curls? Quarter, penny, dime, straw, or coffee straw like diameter???

Hi Julia,

From your description, it sounds like you have type 3 hair, but I wouldn't be able to tell definately without seeing your hair. Have you looked at the hair type section listed on the home page of the forum? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

what exactly is this one? the diameter of my curls when wet are smaller than a dime but bigger than a straw..???

you could be right. In my attempts to really asses my type I have been taking a close look at my hair and it seems like it is a mixture. I have baby hair that never goes away no matter what. Some parts of my hair look really black- indian (mixed -whatever, not sure of how to describe ) and other parts are not course but are thicker than the rest of my hair. Could this be due to overprocessing, hair beeing dry etc?

Still confused.... /images/graemlins/confused.gif

You sound like a 3b to me. My sisters have hair like you describe. Their hair looks really cute when they first wash it - really curly like a jheri curl but gets real big & frizzy as their hair dries. At the hairline and nape of the neck they have babyhair that looks almost straight. Their hair is very easy to straighten with a blowdryer but curls really fast with any hint of humidity. Does this sound like your hair type? As far as possible damage how have you been styling your hair? Is it or was it relaxed? My sisters have curly permed/relaxed their hair but both processes were really damaging to their hair now they just go with their natural curl and try to work with it. HTH.

I find the typing(hair) confusing myself sometimes. Lately my hair(as it gets longer) feels more like 3b/-3/c instead of 3c/4a. My hair hangs in waves and curls when it's wet...but as it dries it will frizzes if I don't use a leave-in with some weight(which is what I get with the products I use when I dry my hair naturally). As a matter of fact, since I got rid of the damaged relaxed ends my natural hair is straighter when it's soak and wet then when it was relaxed...but once it dries it's a different story. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

In your natural pics you definitely look like a 3A/3B. It's probably a result of your length because it allows the curls to be weighed down more. And if I didn't say it before your hair looks gorgeous both natural and roller wrapped!

Hi Julia,

It sounds like you're a mixture of 3b/3c, just like me...hi hair twin. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was thinking the same thing. Originally when I posted my type I was transioning and still had damaged, frizzed sections. Even after the 'big chop' the top and bangs seemed to just want to frizz(I thought it was because it was type 4a and had to be treated differently...) It was so frustrating! /images/graemlins/wallbash.gif That was when I was thinking about going back to relaxing... /images/graemlins/confused.gif but it seems to have settle down. /images/graemlins/clap.gif
So maybe as we go we need to re-evaluate our hair and update our profiles as needed.

Hi Crysdon, I would love to find someone on the board with hair like mine. /images/graemlins/wave.gif Can you describe what you hair is like. (resistance to perm, what it is like when it is wet, what products you like to use, your regime etc.)

I know I have to post some pictures and I will try to soon. I just have some ends that I have to decide how to get rid of (all at once or over time) and then I will take some pictures. I was thinking that perhaps there is a certain way that "our" hair likes to be treated. Maybe I am not caring for my hair the way I should be because I do not understand what my "type" is.
