Heat Protectants...Do we really need them?!?!!

Okay...I've got my routine down to a tee...I likes to keep thangs simple. :D

I wash and deep condition twice a week with Loreals Nature's Therapy. Put some Fantasia IC Leave in w/ Aloe and UBH Creme Lotion in my hair then roller set. I take the rollers down and if it has been a while since a relaxer, I'll smooth with a curling iron. I've been doing this for almost a year now (varying products) and have never used a heat protectant before smoothing w/ a curling iron. I was thinking about getting a ceramic curling iron, but don't know if I want to pay that much money.

Anyway, are heat protectants really neccessary? How many still have gained growth with using some kind of heat and not using a protectant? And if I need to use one, should I use one while wet like the one from Loreal everyone is talking about or one on dry hair before I use the curling iron like the Ion one everyone is talking about?

Thanks!

I don't see the necessity of using them for a rollerset. I think most ladies on here probably don't put something extra in their hair just to protect it from the heat of drying their hair under a hooded dryer for rollersets.

When ladies mention using heat protectants, they are for when you use a flat iron or blowdryer for your hair which is more like direct heat.

Hope that helps! ;)

I personally would ALWAYS use a heat protectant when applying heat to my hair be it heat from a dryer or "direct" heat from a curling iron or flat iron.

I don't use heat protectants when I roller set. IMO, it's not necessary when roller setting. If I were using direct heat (curling iron, flat iron, blow dryer), then I would definitely use a heat protectant.

I like the thickness of it, but it doesn't have really that many good ingredients. So, I mix something in with it that has some kind of protein for example right now, Mizani Moisturefuse. I was using UBH, but I am tired of running out and having to buy it online.

Thanks ladies. I do use a curling iron though after I sit under a hooded dryer for an hour and a half. Especially when I am about 2 months post relaxer, I have to smooth at least the roots, but usually go down the whole strand if I want a straight look.

The only time I use heat protectants is when I blow dry my hair or hot curl it. I must do this otherwise there will be strands of hair everywhere! I don't use any of the products mentioned. I use a little ORS Carrot oil, Wild Growth oil or my Biostrand cream.

Okay ladies, when you ya'll say heat protectant do you actually mean a product that is specifically for heat protection and says heat protection on the label or do you just mean make sure you just put any ol grease or oil on your hair before you put heat on it?

And since I smooth w/ a curling iron, do I need to use a heat protect before I smooth. I assume I don't need to use one for sitting under the dryer.

I only use my heat protectant when I use my curling iron. My ceramic curling iron only cost $17.00, to me that is a good investment.

Used to use it? Oh oh...why'd you stop?
I basically purchased it to try it out. I just went back to using my regular stuff once I finished up the container.

i have decided to stop using mine it keeps me/my daughter from getting a straight press and it leaves my hair kind of sticky i use breakthru foaming protectant

$17.00, really? See I was looking at a CHI ceramic curling iron in Trade Secret and it was 99.99. That is expensive, but they do have a lifetime warrenty. I didn't know if I had to get a real good one like that. I know some people have CHI and FHI flat irons that they spent a good grip on, so I didn't know if I should get one of that brand or something cheaper that says ceramic out of a BSS.

Get a cheap one for starters and if you like it save up and invest in a CHI or something. I got mine on sale at Sally's

i agree.

*ugh* at that message is too short error. sometimes u dont need 10 characters!!! there we go..

I've used both an oil and serum on my hair but for different reasons. WGO oil combo is used for smoothing down new growth with a ceramic flat iron and preventing frizzies several weeks past touchup. The serum is used for lighter styling if hair has been recently relaxed and only needs a slight bend from a caramic flat iron after a rollerset/wrap. I only do this rarely though -- usually just rollerset/wrap only after washing.

I use a heat protector when rollersetting and using direct heat. For me the best thing is to use a leave in conditioner that also protects from heat, like Mizani thermelastic or thermastrength. That way you're not using a lot of products that will weigh down your hair. I'll use these either on wet hair or on dry hair.

I use Redken heatglide serum - its good for shine and smoothness, but works better with heat, so I only use it when I blowdry or flat iron.
