Since low porosity hair doesn't seem to get moisturised in one sitting:
- do you use a leave-in twice (on wet hair, then reapplied once dry)?
- do you bother with heat protection (I know cones block moisture so does it defeat the purpose)?

How do you stretch your hair before flat ironing?? (Pls be specific with blowdrying).
- I know how to rollerset, but it doesn't give me good results -crazy tangles, breakage where there's new growth, puffy hair to finish -not worth it.

- When I blowdry my hair, I don't finish with straight hair either.. I get a lot of broken hairs when combing my NG with a paddle brush, or a puffy finish along with shrinkage when using the tension method.

- When I do 6-8 box braids, my hair unravels at the roots anyway, since my hair's relaxed (texlaxed).

Mini rant..
I just can't believe that after all these years of haircare (2007 onwards), I'm still at this point with my hair:
- No matter what I use, or even after drying in plaits (6-8), I still get 50 or so broken hairs all over my decolletage /clothes & bed with me just fingercombing my hair!

I think stretching my NG might be the key to combat the breakage, since it's probably new growth breakage:
- Not sure how to explain this, but the parts of my hair that are just new growth, seem to break from the coils formed at the end. I don't know how else to explain it. I can't stretch those parts in plaits either.
- When my hair is straight straight, I don't get 50 or so mini hairs when just fingercombing my hair.
BUT - I don't have the time /money for someone else to blowdry it regularly.

If I can't grow my hair anymore, it doesn't matter, but I'd like to be able to minimise this breakage and style THIS hair, YKWIM?

Has anyone managed to do it? My hair is texlaxed & low porosity. I really need help with this.

I can't help you with all of it but I will help you with what I can.

Diluting my leave-in works much better than trying to put it on straight. I mix mine with AVG or AVJ. But I plan on trying diluting it with just water. Because the cuticles lay flat, the thinner product seems to absorb better.

I also have tried heating my diluted leave-in and that works well.

Applying it twice works as well. I apply it when its wet, sit under a heat cap for 10 or 20 minutes to help it absorb. Then I start to let it dry, but while it's still damp I apply it again. Because you are texlaxed you may be able to apply it when it's dry. If I let my hair dry without applying it first it's just too brittle.

I don't straighten my hair but I think you should use a heat protectant. Because our hair already doesn't get enough moisture, that heat will be even more drying to our hair. Skipping the heat protectant will probably cause more damage than not being able to moisturize after the cones.

Can't help you much with straightening.

Do you use a leave-in twice (on wet hair, then reapplied once dry)?
No - I apply LI, seal and either air dry or roller set

Do you bother with heat protection (I know cones block moisture so does it defeat the purpose)?
Yes - I use heat protectant always regardless of the -cones aspect. Protecting my hair from heat damage is far more important than -cones blocking moisture.

How do you stretch your hair before flat ironing??
I don't blow dry at home. I air dry and flat iron the roots only OR roller set. I don't flat iron my roots when roller setting.

When I blowdry my hair, I don't finish with straight hair either.. I get a lot of broken hairs when combing my NG with a paddle brush, or a puffy finish along with shrinkage when using the tension method.
The only time my hair is blow dried is on TU day before the stylist flat irons but even then, I don't see tons of breakage. Maybe your hair is too dry or the blow dryer is drying your hair out.

When I do 6-8 box braids, my hair unravels at the roots anyway, since my hair's relaxed (texlaxed).
Not sure what it unravels at the roots. I can braid my hair and it not unravel. The ends unravel but I put a rubber band on the end to keep it from unraveling.

bb09: I'm not sure how helpful I can be since I'm not texlaxed and I don't use much heat anymore. I would think you still need to use heat protectant. I think low porosity hair is more resistant to heat, but it can still be heat damaged. Cones will block moisture from getting in, but I would think you'd want that in the blow drying (or flat ironing stage) to prevent reversion. I think you would need to get the moisture in before that as part of your deep conditioning process. Now doing that is where I'm still no expert: it has to be a liquidy product and I have to use heat, trying to experiment with baking soda to see if that helps.

faithVA -thanks so much. Can I just ask, what products do you use? Do you leave actual conditioners in or just leave-ins?

I have done both. During the summer I left actual conditioners in. Now I am back to leave-ins. Leaving the conditioners in worked a little better than the leave-ins but not much. I just started my trials with the AVG, so I haven't had a chance to try it with everything.

So far I have mixed AVG with Giovanni Direct. It was ok but dried crunchy.

This week I am mixing AVG with Taliah Waajid Mist Bodifier. Nice moisture and very soft.

I would say if you want to try the AVG or AVJ try it with whatever you have. What I did first was to apply the product straight on one half of my head and applied it mixed with AVG on the other half. That way I could tell immediately if the AVG was improving the product. So far it improves products for me.

I'm not sure if its the actual AVG or if its just because it its diluted. In the future I will compare diluting with AVG vs diluting with water.

@divachyk -thank you. I don't really know how to answer the box braids part, but thinking about it more closely, too big sections maybe? My NG is very puffy, so it tends to unravel. The texlaxed part usually stays twisted or plaited.

RE: blowdrying. I’ve lost my reply twice now(!), so I’ll finish this up in Word. My NG is very compact as I blowdry it with a paddle brush. It doesn’t get straighter as I’m brushing it, but I get the broken hairs. With the tension method, I actually think I finish blowdrying my hair way too early, since it’s puffy /shrunken by the time it’s fully dry. I wish you could do correctives with a no-lye relaxer, since I'm not sure where to go from here.

mg1979 -thank you. Baking soda has never worked for me in the past. Have you ever used a DC on damp hair with heat, then left it in?
(Doesn't seem to work for me, but does anything?) Thanks so much.

bb09, oh ok re: braids. I can't box braid my own hair but when I've had others to do it for me, it didn't unravel. Are you catching the hair tightly at the base of the scalp? I was just wondering if the braid was slipping because it wasn't secured at the base.

I suggest not blow drying. Why not air dry and then flat iron or maybe even roller set. Blow drying is too much for my hair because my ng is thick and compacted also. The only time my hair does well with blow drying is after a fresh TU.

Are you opposed to having a correct professionally done?

Since low porosity hair doesn't seem to get moisturised in one sitting:
- do you use a leave-in twice (on wet hair, then reapplied once dry)?
I only use a leave-in once on wet hair. When my hair is dry I use a water-based moisturizer.
- do you bother with heat protection (I know cones block moisture so does it defeat the purpose)?
I have used Hydratherma Naturals Heat Protectant which I believe is silicone-free. I can't remember if Shea Moisture Elixir Spray is silicone-free as well. But I noticed that silicone had EVERYTHING to do with my porosity level.

How do you stretch your hair before flat ironing?? (Pls be specific with blowdrying).
- I know how to rollerset, but it doesn't give me good results - and I had the same issues when I roller set with terrible low porosity. It comes out poofy. Detangling each section takes forever and it barely laid smoothly on the roller. Being texlaxed and low porosity is a bad combination. As soon as I took my rollers out, my hair was poof and my ends look like I torched them.

- When I blowdry my hair, I don't finish with straight hair either.. I get a lot of broken hairs when combing my NG with a paddle brush, or a puffy finish along with shrinkage when using the tension method. YUP exactly what I went through. I discovered through Kimmaytube on YouTube that even your hair when it comes to hair care (not just when relaxing) that it has to have a pH balance. Adjusting my products (not using Roux Porosity Control) was helping my hair to be more smoother.

- When I do 6-8 box braids, my hair unravels at the roots anyway, since my hair's relaxed (texlaxed). Yes definitely. Since I had low porosity, my hair didn't even keep the braid-out look. I used Ninapruitt (YouTube) satin method for braidouts.

Mini rant..
I just can't believe that after all these years of haircare (2007 onwards), I'm still at this point with my hair:
I've been on this board since Dec 06, Jan 07 and have no real dramatic difference in my hair, length wise. Its been almost 5 years and I don't have 30 inches of retained length either. Maybe 5 inches.

I think stretching my NG might be the key to combat the breakage, since it's probably new growth breakage:
Been there. What seems to help I noticed with my new growth and hair overall is shampooing using an applicator bottle. Getting the moisturizing shampoo to my new growth (especially in the crown) makes it 1000% more manageable. And mixing my DC with JBCO.

If I can't grow my hair anymore, it doesn't matter, but I'd like to be able to minimise this breakage and style THIS hair, YKWIM? YUP :yep:

Has anyone managed to do it? My hair is texlaxed & low porosity. I really need help with this. I switched to silicone-free products. One things I realized my hair can't deal w/ (which caused me to get low porosity) was using silicone products and using home-made products exclusively. I love hairveda.com and karensbodybeautiful.com but those sites that sell their own products don't do anything for my hair when it comes to a pH balance (which effects your porosity) except for shine and smelling hella good. I love supporting our businesses but using those lines exclusively or w/o a commercial line just doesn't work for me. HTH

i use a leave-in on damp hair. i use a moisturizer on dry hair if i am not heat styling.

roller sets work pretty good for me. when my new growth comes starts to get puffy and crazy, i flat iron the roots only.

right now i airdry my hair instead of blow drying, prior to flat ironing.

i just came across a heat protectant that doesn't seem to block moisture and leave my hair dry. Silk Elements heat protectant spray in the green bottle. you can buy it at Sally's. it doesn't contain as many cones in the first 5 ingredients like other protectants do.

i have been on this board for years. i have been through many lengths and hair styles. i am focusing more on length this year to see if i can make it to BSB and beyond.

how i have come this far on my own is to really get to the bottom of what works and doesn't work for my hair.

i learned that heavy products only coat and leave buildup, they don't really penetrate my hair strands.

i learned less is more, i don't need to use a ton of product to get the results i want.

i learned to try to be gentle as possible.

i learned my hair operates better clean. sulfates are ok to use for my hair. it removes all of the gunk and my hair isn't dry from it, but products can penetrate better when everything is properly removed.

i wash my hair every 3-4 days. the longest i will go is once a week.

and i dust often. maybe too often, but i dust enough.

I noticed someone in another thread was saying as a low porosity head they get overconditioned...one of the things she said she does was wash almost daily. I can't imagine trying this, but I can't imagine overconditioned low porosity hair either!

Are you catching the hair tightly at the base of the scalp? Possibly not.. Thanks for suggesting that.

Why not air dry and then flat iron or maybe even roller set. Airdrying then flat ironing it would be an absolute disaster. I'd have to use such a high heat temperature, and my hair shrinks as it dries anyway, so it just wouldn't be great. I think your hair has to be relaxed straight for a decent result (straightening it without blowdrying).
Rollersetting leads to too many tangles and a puffy finish to boot.

Are you opposed to having a correct professionally done? I have, and my hair came out exactly the same. I know no-lyes can't be corrected. I wanted to try it anyway and got no results.

TheEspressoHair -Thanks for seeing where I'm coming from, and celebrate those 5 inches -I'm doing much worse!

What commercial products do you use now for smoother hair? For the past few days, I've been using what's left of my AO WC conditioner, sealed with silk dream's nourish oil. My sink is still full of broken hairs, and my hair looks puffier than ever.

How do you stretch and dry your hair now?

@shortdub78 -thanks so much. We have a Sally's here.. somewhere, so I'll be able to try that at some point. & I just read through all the tips.. Thank you! I just have to go a bit out of my way to buy hair products right now. I'll try the cream of nature leave-in spray at some point since you said it was light.

Oh, and I would love to have a bit more length, but right now, if I'm able to stop having a sink full of broken hairs, and have my hair looking somewhat decent.. I don't mind if my hair "grows" (retains length) very slowly.

I have low porosity hair. It is relaxed now and used to be texlaxed in the 90s but I always suffered from breakage.

When I co wash my hair, I never directly put product on my hair. I let my hair dry a bit before adding product to my hair. I am really careful about being heavy handed. I don't add twice.

I always use heat protection.

I never flat iron. It is too much direct heat and melts my fine hair.

I use the tension method and get my hair blown professionally but I only do this once in a while. When I used to get my hair blown out and it wasn't done using the tension method my ends and roots would be rough and I would get breakage.

I now do wet buns after a fresh co wash. I co wash every two to three days.

I stretch my relaxers and don't have any breakage.

I think its about technique and products. I don't use products with cones.

I used to have lots of breakage and I never knew why or how to stop it.

Best,
Almond Eyes

What commercial products do you use now for smoother hair?

I use L'Oreal Eversleek (silicone free) line along w/ UBH Hair Line. I added 100% pure Argan Oil, Vatika Oil, and JBCO to my regimen

For the past few days, I've been using what's left of my AO WC conditioner, sealed with silk dream's nourish oil. My sink is still full of broken hairs, and my hair looks puffier than ever. Do you deep condition w/ protein?

How do you stretch and dry your hair now?
I stretch washing my hair in pig tails (Crown and Glory Method). Before I use to wash my hair in the shower into a ponytail to ensure my hair was smooth but the hair underneath the top layer and the crown was still coarse when it dried. I now wash in my in hairs. I use Eversleek Shampoo w/ a color applicator bottle and L'Oreal Cleansing Conditioner. I make sure my roots get shampoo and my part going down the middle of my hair allows the shower to get my crown. I've notice a dramatic difference in my new growth. My new growth is soo much softer and looser than before.

Thank you @almond_eyes and @TheEspressoHair!!
I think I'll bump this back up if I'm able to get results. Right now, the take home message seems to be to apply product twice with a light hand or once, and on damp hair.

Do you deep condition w/ protein? -Not generally. I stick to moisturising conditioners & DC's. When I used 'silk dreams whip my hair' with heat -has protein in it, I found that my hair hardened and my shower breakage temporarily stopped (for one wash, and in the shower only -ugh).. so for my next wash, I left nexxus emergencee on my hair for about 10 minutes (no heat). My hair was breaking before I used the emergencee, and after.. maybe even more than before, so I'm at a loss for what to do RE: protein. I've already chelated my hair. Still have broken hairs. & I know you need protein to be able to hold on to moisture, but even WITH protein, moisture just doesn't stick to my hair.

I intend to wash my hair in plaits, from start to finish. A few more questions (sorry!) I'm wondering how you style your hair once you're done washing it? & what leave-in do you use? I can't buy any of these products right now, but if it's giving other low po users good results, I have no probs trying it when I can.

mg1979 -oh my gosh, neither can I. What thread was that? I thought I had read every low po thread out there!

@bb09

When I use a protein conditioner...I apply a moisturizing conditioner after and rinse it out to soften my hair up.

I use L'Oreal Eversleek Leave-In. But you can use any leave-in using KimmayTube's recipe. Literally adding a little bit of oil and aloe vera gel or juice really soften and detangles the hair.

I air dry in bantu knots. In the morning I take my hair down and put it in a bun or ponytail using a banana clip. My tail has nice curls and softness to it.

Have you tried the baggy method?
