Healthy hair vs. having fun with your hair

For years I have been frustrated with not being able to dye my hair 'properly'. While I was relaxed, all I could do was use temporary colours to get a red tint. No other colours worked on black hair.

When I first started transitioning I was looking forward to bleaching my hair when natural so I could dye it every colour under the sun.
Now my hair is natural (and I've stopped using heat), I love how shiny and healthy it is. And I hardly ever get splits.

I still want to dye it but I don't want my hair to be fried again. I had damaged hair for about a decade. I know I can grow it long this time. I really want long hair. And I also want to prove to other people I can grow long hair (I know this shouldn't matter!). Dyeing my hair could be a huge setback.
But on the other hand, I don't want to regret not doing it later, and now is the perfect time to experiment with my hair. It's still relatively short, so I can still start all over again (but REALLY don't want to! I hated transitioning). I'm still at university, so don't have to worry about prospective employers judging me on having blue hair or whatever.

I bleached a bit of my hair during my transition (an undercolour) but looking back I should have experimented more then.

So...
To those who have managed to keep their healthy despite bleaching or dyeing with permanent colours (not henna, rinses or semi-permanents), how have you managed this? Do you do anything differently compared to before you coloured your hair?
