Has the recession affected your hair?

WARNING- kinda long post...
Ok, I didn't check to see if there is a thread out there about this (sorry), but I've been thinking about this for the past week or so...

I am relaxed (bone straight) and currently 17 weeks into a first time 24 week stretch. Yall take a moment and offer up a prayer for me :look:... I am blessed that its going so far so good, with very minimal shedding and breakage and in my opinion I don't look a HAM (yet) :lachen:

Anyway, since I have sooo much new growth and my two textures are so fragile, moisturizing conditioning products are even more important to me now but they are soooo expensive. My fine hair is finicky. I have used KeraCare Humecto as my DC of choice for almost a year...but now that I must DC twice a week w/ 17 weeks of new growth that I need to work conditioner through I can't AFFORD it anymore! :wallbash: But at the same time, I need something cheap and effective but with tons of slip. I recently also ran out of my Aphogee 2 min Keratin reconstructor and panicked. It doesn't carry the pricetag as high as Humecto, thank goodness, but if I could find a cheaper yet effective protein condish, I'd use it. I use this once a week because my hair does better during a stretch when I step up on the protein.

I went to the BSS today and bought 3 bottles of Elasta QP Intense moisturizing conditioner ($3.29 each) and a big bottle of UltraSheen Duo Tex Protein Conditioner ($5.99). I just DCed with the Elasta mixed with coconut oil for 30 mins w/ heat-- I was impressed.:lick:This is great news because I can purchase 4 bottles of the Elasta QP for the same price I'd pay for ONE bottle of Humecto! :yep: It had a good amount of slip and my hair airdried very soft and moisturized. I will try the DuoTex on Wednesday. I hope I'm happy with that too.

Healthy haircare shouldn't break the bank!

Have any of you had to alter your stash or routine due to the recession? Tell me your stories- lol

I'm not really a PJ so I probably spend $25-$30/month on shampoo/conditioner/ACV/EOs the only products I use and that is including Nexxus Emergencee which I think is my most expensive purchase. And then because I'm DIYer, and tend to wear braids for loooooooong time, my hair really doesn't cost me much to care for so no, the recession didn't affect my hair. I do use plastic bags to baggy and Saran wrap so I also don't seem to need to shop for plastic caps anymore, and I still have the ones I bought over a year ago.

At the end of 09 I decided to stop wearing LF's after almost 2 yrs of buying a new wig or two every 3 months at $175 and up per unit. I spent another $50 per month on LF maintenance supplies in addition to my regular PJism.

I'm transitioning now, but just the other day I was thinking about how much money I've spent in the past on weaves and wigs. Thats where the majority of my hair funds were going. I'm glad I'm over that. Now I probably spend $20-30 month tops on hair care.

Wow Nonie you have to re-purchase things once a month?

Not really. I usually have a few conditioners/shampoos in rotation so I can go longer w/o running out and I only replace what's run out. Like this month, I've only bought AO GPB (second week of July--I know this because I posted in a thread asking about your latest purchase that weekend). But I haven't bought anything else and don't need to coz I have enough products in rotation. But since the month I might need to replace Nexxus Emerg, I may also buy another product, $25 won't be so hard to reach, hence the reason I gave it as ballpark amount.

When i was working..whenever i bought one item, it bought two..SO i have a huge backstock..hopefully i am stocked when i find a job..

I stopped wearing wigs and i am enjoying by bc and my backstock..

Well, I didn't start my HHJ until the recession (lol) so it's been affected in a good way. I spend more on my hair - especially since I'm about to invest in some Qhemet Biologics products - then I did before. It'll be the most I've spent on a hair product. None of my other products have ever cost more than $10 :yep:

The only way that the recession has affected my hair journey is that it's forced me to stop being such a PJ and to stop being so wasteful. I used to try to buy every little thing I saw and I was mad heavy handed, until I realized that I didn't make enough to be partaking in such things.

So now, I have a few things that I use and replenish as they run out, and I refuse to buy products online. If I can't get them locally, then oh well, I just won't be using them. The only exception to the rule is the Exchange Forum, because you can sometimes find some really good deals on SheScentIt, Qhemet, and other stuff that's only available online or that aren't available in my area. :yep:

As a result though, sometimes, I get bored with my regimen...it's such the same all the time. But on the upside, I think my hair has improved with the consistency and simplicity that comes with a smaller stash.

The Recession has not affected my hair because I started taking care of my own hair a couple of years ago and I have saved so much money. Also I use cheap hair products because I know that I will not keep paying for expensive hair products even if they work great. I like to buy my hair products for the bss, wallmart, target, cvs, or sally's. These places are all in my neighborhood.

Yes, I would of had a Pibbs already :look: (which I'm getting soon)
Besides that I think the recession has help my PJism since I no longer spend money on unnecessary clothing, ordering out. Hair stuff is waaay cheaper. I haven't gone shopping since Christmas of last year.

I don't think that the recession has affected my PJism, because I'm not really a PJ. Also, I consider how much money I spent going to the stylist on a regular basis (monthly) and even if I spent $50 a month on conditioners, styling products (which I don't), I would be saving lot of money.

Actually it has helped me learn to take care of my hair better than before. I can find cheaper products that have been more effective and I now do most chemical services to my own hair so I save money...and hair.
I still go for highlights though...

You're such a squirrel. I see you burried your nuts well ahead of the winter.

NONIE U hit the nail on the head! WOW, (r u peaking in my head) No one ever put it like that but that is it!

I have been good and not bought much of anything due to trying to use up my stash. :)

Yet Nonie funny you should say this- this is how I live my life preparing for the nexter year!

No, the recession did not change my hair routine. What changed my routine is my stylist retiring and moving out of state. Has she not moved, I'd still be weaving/relaxing rather than being natural.

Keeping your hair up is expensive if you cannot DIY.

When DH asked me to stop weaving in 2007, I do not think it was financial decision for him since he never knew how I paid for my weaves. Once I sat down and added up what I was paying for weaves, it was an easy decision to stop.

I am putting in crochet braids today, which is about a $30 style since I paid a woman to do my cornrows.

Yes, it has. Before the recession I was still under my parents care so they would take me to the salon every week... just now realizing how expensive that is anywhere between $40-60 a week is ALOT. So in all reality me buying products now is cheaper than the salon. I'm in college now and I take care of my hair now. So it still feels like a lot of money coming out of my pocket. And I still can't do all the things I want. Like buy weaves and have them installed. But I don't know if that has something to do with being a college student or the recession... :look:
