ever heard someone say that your hair was "pretty long" and wondered what on earth they were talking about? About four months ago a hairstylist was recommending time under a hooded dryer for me and was looking at my hair and said it was "pretty long..." and I just kinda stared at her. Sometimes I'm happy with it's progress and other days I wonder why I don't just slap it in some braids....Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

OMG! I know! A hairdresser I went to said that to me. I knew her behind was lying! 'cuz my hair just gently glides below the base of my neck. That's short to me! I think she was saying it to make me feel better 'cuz she knows how obsessed I am with long hair. When I used to go to her every 6 weeks, everytime she relaxed it, I'd be like, "is it long yet?"! "Is it long yet"?! Even when she just washed it, I'd be asking if some miraculous length has popped up. I think people tell me that just to make me feel better.
Sorry for the long post. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Porkypig, maybe she wasn't lying to you compared to what she's seen. I mean, I wasn't asking this woman to verify length for me. I was in the market to buy a hooded dryer and was asking her about drying times. She was a friend of mine....I think my hair was about 2 inches beyond the base of my neck at the time....but since my hair is on the fine side, I think I need to accumulate some MAJOR length before I feel like it's something to dance about.

Just because your hair is not bra strap length doesn't mean it is not long. I personally would have been pleased with the compliment. Actually, shoulder length is considered medium.

Bett1e, I'm confused..you said that just because one's hair isn't bra strap that doesn't mean it's not long, but then you said that shoulder length is considered medium length. Seems like you're stressing that above bra strap IS short, to you...No big deal, just trying to see what your opinion is..

Actually I thought she menant that your hair doesn't have to bra strap to be considered long and that shoulder length is usally considered medium length hair.

Did I miss something here? I thought she was agrreing that your hair was long. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think because it is so RARE to see black women with hair down to their bra strap (real home grown hair that is), Hair that touches the shoulder to some IS long! To us it may seem strange, but it's true. Currently my hair is touching my shoulders. It's usually to my shoulder blades however during a moment of temporary insanity (smile) back in July 2001 I cut my hair off! Yes, cut as in the Halle Berry do. Now, that my hair is just at my shoulders people are amazed that this is my real hair and pretty much consider it long. I haven't done anything to really purposely achieve this length (I just found this board a week or two ago), but my hair has reached and passed the length of my SILs. Now that I'm on this hair growing mission, they are going to be SHOCKED when they see my hair growth take off!!! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yeah The Filipino lady who did my weave told me my hair was long and I was shocked and happy at the same time to be considered as a long haired girl. I never really thought of my hair as being long because I always considered hair to be long once it start to touch the top of the back. My hair is only shoulder length in the back the sides are about 1-2 inches away and top is about 4 inches away from my shoulders

Well, that just goes to show that the concept of having long hair is really a matter of opinion. I'm not aiming for anything in particular. I just want enough to do whatever hairstyle I'm yearning for at the current moment. This is the first time that I've ever posted on a hair care board before and believe it or not, my priority is to have HEALTHY hair. Healthy hair looks great no matter what the length.

Daviine you are exactly right. I am not sure why that post was confusing. There are a lot of inches from your shoulder to your bra strap. Some people keep insisting your hair is only long if it is bra strap length. The beauty industry considers your hair long when it falls below the shoulder. It is still considered medium if it touches the shoulder or is above the shoulder. In my post, I am addressing the issue of why someone would be upset because a beautician called their medium shoulder length hair long. In my opinion, it is a compliment for someone to say my hair is long. Just because it doesn't hit your bra strap doesn't mean it is not long.

Bett1e, I don't think she was upset that they thought her hair was long, just surprised. I think most people would say that on a black woman shoulder length hair is long, esp. since they may not be accustomed to seeing black women with really long hair.

I originally come from Uganda in Africa. It is very rare to see pure africans ( not mixed race or arab origins) with bra strap length hair. You are considered to have long hair at shoulder length. Most people do have that length of hair when relaxed and rarely pass that length.

When I came to UK 10 years ago, I have met two black people with bra strap length hair. The rest of us rely on weaves.

Some people define length differently. My cousin keeps telling me my hair is getting long and I look at her like whatever. My hair lenth ends at the base of my neck. Sometimes I feel like it will never grow long.

Actually, if I am not mistaken, anything past shoulder length is considered long by beauticians in the industry. This goes for just about everybody including whites. It is just rare these days to see anybody with really long hair. I guess we are just so obsessed with long hair that we don't see that as very long. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif
