Has anyone used Black Soap on their hair?

I washed my hair earlier today (I'm home and deep conditioning right now) and since I had a piece of Black Soap in the shower I decided to soap up one section of my hair with it to see what would happen. To my surprise, my hair felt soft during and after I rinsed the lather off. My hair also had a moisturized feel to it after I rinsed it, sort of like it was coated with a light oil (not greasy).

I thought great...so I started soaping up all my hair. It was sort of hard trying to wash my scalp, but I rubbed the soap on my head and did my best. Then...my scalp started to itch. So, I had to wash again with shampoo.

BTW, I have the REAL African Black Soap (www.nasabb.com) that comes from Africa. It comes in balls and is brown with dark brown spots. The ingredients are: roasted plaintain skins, palm kernel oil, palm oil, coconut oil, natural sodium.

Do you think that this would dry your hair out over time? I've heard in the past that coconut oil can be drying. And I made a note of the sodium, but "sodium PCA" is extremely moisturizing. I don't know if sodium and "sodium PCA" are the same thing but I would hope they would maybe have the same effect.

My hair DID feel moisturized.

I just wanted to try something more natural, that contained NO SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) on my hair. I tried Aubrey Organics J.A.Y. shampoo in the past and that stuff stripped and tangled my hair.

Has anyone ever used this soap or another natural soap on their hair with good results? BTW, I found a site that sells natural soaps SPECIFICALLY for hair washing. Will post the link under this thread when I find the address.

In looking for that site I mentioned in my first post I came across these websites:

http://amalthia-olive-oil-soap-crete-greece.com/

http://www.sierramadreweb.com/ollin/

They claim that their soaps promote hair growth and RE-growth. What do you all think?

Another hair soap site:

(I can't seem to find that site I originally posted about that sells shampoo bars.)

P.S. Just saw this on www.nasabb.com website:

For your hair: That's right! Before there was shampoo, there was black soap. Since centuries ago, africans have been washing their hair with this amazing soap. Don't take it from us. Try it yourself.! When you are done, use your regular hair conditioner and of course don't forget your Nasabb Kelechi Hair Oil. You need to feed your hair too.

So I guess I CAN use black soap to wash my hair....hmmm, think I will try it again next time I wash.

Hi, Blkmane!

You asked:

"Has anyone ever used this soap or another natural soap on their hair with good results?"

Yes, I've used a lot of natural soaps at this point to shampoo my hair and with excellent results. I remember discussing this a bit when Sweetcocoa had asked about how to use a shampoo bar, whether it's marketed that way or a simple soap bar with which you can wash your hair.

I had explained to her that if you have hard water you MUST use a vinegar rinse in order to avoid soap scum...the natural reaction which comes with hard water and soap. I think that's the problem that you had.

Anyway, the ones I've found to be the best are goat's milk bars and coconut milk bars. They are extremely moisturizing and softening to the hair. Plus, what I have found, is that when you are following with an ACV rinse, you don't have to worry as much about proportions in terms of stripping your hair. Goat's milk bars are wonderful because the goat's milk is excellent in terms of scalp health. There are goat's milk bars everywhere on the web and at places like Fresh Fields/Whole Foods. I think one of the first I used was a Zumbar..they have so many varieties it's unreal. The tea tree/citrus combo is utterly awesome /images/graemlins/grin.gif And, it's rich, creamy lather all around. With the coconut milk bars, I found those at a site in Hawaii... Honu Bath Shop (Soaps of Hawaii) With them, I would recommend, if you are interested, to write for samples. The woman who owns the place is more than generous.

The other thing with shampoo bars or any bar is that you can always liquefy them. You basically shred the bar, melt down using a double boiler, then add a bit of pectin which you can purchase at any grocery store. The pectin keeps the soap from re-solidifying.

With the black soap, the only thing I've used in that vein is the Black Soap Shampoo by African Formulas. It is a wonderful shampoo and excellent for hair and scalp. It is ultra-moisturizing, too.

I am sorry that you had a bad experience with the Aubrey J.A.Y. shampoo...it's been so good to me. But, I have heard that before in terms of having to take special steps to use the stuff to avoid excess drying and tangles.

Happy New Year to you and Joy,

Jade

BlkMane, nasabb's black soap will not dry your hair over time. I have been using it for the past 6 months and it is wonderful. I use it all over my body. If I remember correctly, someone at nasabb told me that they use virgin coconut oil.(purest form) Refined coconut oil will sometimes dry you out but not virgin coconut oil. You should be fine. Enjoy!

Thanks for that info! What about that "coating" that Jade21 mentioned, though? If I get a water filter, will that solve it?
