Has anyone ever heard of this?

I had a touchup with a new hairdresser about a week ago.The front of my hair always breaks and is very short;she told me that is because I always wear my hair in a pony. She said I should wrap my hair every night and wear my hair open every day.
I thought from this board that ponytails are a protective style and are much better than leaving hair open all the time.

However she has really nice hair so it made me wonder if I should start wrapping now.
What do you guys think?

For me personally wrapping thins my hair out and I lose too much hair from the manipulation. So I'm not a wrapper.

It also makes my hair flat.

Do you brush your hair when you pull it back into a ponytail? Maybe you are pulling it back too tighly in the front? I'm sure you will get more responses from others.

It depends on your hair type. My friend is type 3b or c and wrapping every night and leaving it open all day grew her hair a LOT.

I am 4a/b relaxed and I do half & half. That grew my hair.

Do you brush your hair back straight and tight, or is your ponytail loose? Do you use gel? Those are both bad.

I dont se gel.yuck!
I use jojoba oil daily and I just started using a hair polish.
I usually just put my hair in a clip so I dont think it could be too tight.

The front of my hair grows fast tho...and it starts breaking fast and just gets drier than the rest of my hair.I wish I knew why.

,

Sorry this is happening to you. What about trying bangs (short or long) to take any stress off the hairline?

I had gotten lazy earlier this year and my hairline was not as strong as it had been. I went back to warm oil preshampoo treatments and concentrating conditioner on it. I also went back to an old fave, Infusium 23 leave-in (although I know not everyone has a good experience with this product, it's been great for me). I am pleased with the results.

For me a tight ponytail breaks my hair off. I only do very loose ponytails and buns...beware of the wrapping...it will thin out you sides(at least that's what happened to me).

I think wrapping your hair is a good idea. For those who say that wrapping their hair makes their hair break off from the hairline....maybe you wrap your hair too tight...or when you put the scarf on your head, you tie it too tight. If you're hair is thinning at the sides, wrap your hair the opposite way every night...that way, both sides are even, and can grow much better.
As for the ponytails, maybe they are too tight, and thats why you're hairline is breaking off. The reason why the hairdresser told you to wear your hair open everyday, it is to give your hair a break. If you don't want to do that, you can always wear your hair up, WITHOUT using a rubberband, to hold it up. You can do your hair in a bun without using anytime of rubberbands. Or you can try a french roll. If you are concerned with how many pins you're going to have to use, don't worry yourself. Some people use TOO many pins, when they can use much less. What I do, (I have a ton of hair pins on my dresser), but I limit myself to like about 8 pins to do the style I want to do. I use to obsess over my hair's neatness, but I realized that my hair can be neat with not a lot of pins in my hair...it just takes patience.

wrapping your hair all the time, especially in the same direction, and wearing your hair in a pony tail all the time will break your hair off after some time. especially when you wear your pony tail tight and always at the same spot (on your). i really believe that switching up protective styles is one of the keys for growing healthy long hair.

I always wear my hair in clips though so my hair is never in a tight ponytail. And I always change the position in which I put the clip too.

I think I will try putting extra conditioner on the front of my head and see how that works.
