I've done my own strawset. I used to do them to my hair when I was natural and even it took anywhere between 1.5 and 2 hours. When my hair grew out it took me as much as 3 hours to do it. It's an investment but you get good payback because the style can last anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.
How to do the strawset: I washed my hair, maybe I didn't condition (this was back in my hair illiteracy days), I applied sulfur 8 (I'm not recommending this now), and then I wrapped the little section of hair with setting paper. I rolled my hair onto the straw like how someone rolls her hair when doing spiral curls. I set the straw with a bobby-pin and moved on to the next section of hair.
If you want to do this style. I suggest using a setting lotion. Some people use gel but I stay away from that stuff. I don't use setting lotion either- but a product with holding power is recommended for this style.
