Straw set? Is it hard and do I need a setting lotion. How long do they last? /images/graemlins/confused.gif I would really like to try no tonight for this weekend.

Hi Nita,
I've done my own strawset. I used to do them to my hair when I was natural and even it took anywhere between 1.5 and 2 hours. When my hair grew out it took me as much as 3 hours to do it. It's an investment but you get good payback because the style can last anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.

How to do the strawset: I washed my hair, maybe I didn't condition (this was back in my hair illiteracy days), I applied sulfur 8 (I'm not recommending this now), and then I wrapped the little section of hair with setting paper. I rolled my hair onto the straw like how someone rolls her hair when doing spiral curls. I set the straw with a bobby-pin and moved on to the next section of hair.

If you want to do this style. I suggest using a setting lotion. Some people use gel but I stay away from that stuff. I don't use setting lotion either- but a product with holding power is recommended for this style.

Hope this helps.

SweetNic - Thanks /images/graemlins/grin.gif Can't wait to try. Think I might get my first set done at the shop.

I do my own straw sets at home also but use the flexi-rods. I find them easier to handle.

Basically you prep your hair the way u would for a normal roller set but section your hair smaller, like if you were doing medium box braids. Take each piece of sectioned hair and wrap it around the flexi-rod in a spiral from the bottom up. When u get to the top just bend the rod to lock it in place.

If I am pressed for time, I sit under dry if not, I just air dry. The results are pretty much the same. I carry the look for about 4 days.
