Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened?

I am coming to this conclusion. I won't discuss the concerns some of you already know about me and not being able to get my natchal hair smooth and sleek like most of you guys here. But peep this, I just straightened my hair on Sunday, and I kid you not it's already converting, the edges are nappy, it's getting thicker in the crown, of course it isn't sleek. I'm thinking my hair just does not like being straightened.

Anyone else feel this way?

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

This is my next project, to figure out how to straighten my hair without heat damaging it. I've tried for the last two weeks and my ends just will not straighten without a lot of heat. I think that I'm going to need a straightening/smoothing balm or something. It doesn't seem like a lot of naturals use those.

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

No, but I've come to the conclusion that I'm not the best at flat ironing my hair. Whenever I have someone else do it for me, it's smooth and looks better for longer.
Have you ever had someone else straighten it for you?

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

You are not the only one... :nono:

Even if I manage to use enough heat to get my hair straight, it gets poofy almost immediately. I can forget it if there's a raindrop within a 100-mile radius of my head. The only thing that gets my hair swingy-straight is chemicals. But my fine hair can't take more than one touch-up without breakage - no matter what I use or how careful I am. sigh.

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

It's not just you. The thing is my natural hair has the potential to be great when straightened. It's shiny, bouncy, thick - sigh... and just plain looks better than when I had a relaxer. It's just that my ends will puff right back up - no matter how much Biosilk or Sabino Moisture Block I put on it. I even cranked the temp up to 385 degrees! No change. As soon as I washed that burnt smell out of my head, my curls came back crying, "Do that one mo' time ***** and it's your a$$!"

I will accept this, 'cause my natural hair still rocks :yep: I may try one more time when my 1 yr natural mark comes up in December. We'll see...

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

I have discovered the secret to perfectly straight flat-ironed hair.

I two strand twist my freshly natural hair and let it air dry for a day or two. I only apply Redken Smooth Down leave-in.

Two days later, I unravel, apply coconut oil and sabino moisture block then flat iron each piece with my maxiglide set at 5.

I have perfectly straight hair. In fact, I was so taken back my the discovery that I fell off of my bootcamp challenge and straightened again this week. My hair has not reverted back (3 days so far) and I'm dripping in sweat in this hot *** apartment with a hot computer on my lap:lachen:

On youtube, there is a woman named RusticBeauty who does the same thing. Try it

I was about to say exactly this. When I do my own hair it's okay, just ehh. But when I get it done professionally that when I get the 'lasts as long as I want it to, really soft, smooth, flowing in the wind hair'.

Very very interestng. Now, wy do you wait 2 days to take down your twists? I have found that twisting up my hair overnight does give me a better result, because for me blowdrying and then flatironing is not the business :nono: And you add coconut oil and the sabino block huh? Hmmmm.....maybe I need to get a sample of this stuff...

Just out of laziness. I could do it in 1 day, like I did this go around. I guess I just want to ensure that my hair is dry. Mind you, I do not saturate my hair in coconut oil either, like people are saying you will fry your hair with the flat-iron. But that Sabino is truly the business.

Well I'm relaxed! Just imagine how I feel! I totally understand how you are feeling but you need to rock everything else that you know how to do well and don't worry about having straight hair.

I kid you not, no one in real life has seen my hair stick straight in the past... 3 years are more. All of those pics I have in fotki-- I can't wear my hair like that everyday... shoot, not even two days straight.

Don't beat yourself up sweetie! Rock the stuff that makes you a diva!

OMG! This is sooo me. My son just said the other day why don't I ever wear my hair straight. It get's so puffy. And If I beat it into submission :catfight: It looks limp and lifeless. But I can rock a rod set, or curly styles like nobody's business.

This has been my experience. Sometimes I'll try to do it myself but ..:nono:
When I really want to see my hair straight, I just go to a salon.

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

You can see how wavy/curly my hair is in my avatar. My hair will not get straight, and if I so much as take a hot shower or work out, it will not stay straight. Even when I used to relax bone straight, I still had to "touch it up" to get it to look straight. And it is fine so it didn't even look that good.

So I decided to stop torturing it.

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

Yep, I came to this conclusion 2 days ago when I couldn't get my flat-ironed hair straight enough to blend in with the clips ins I made.

I got all kinds of products that didn't help that I should probably sell.

Exactly. Because I'm natural too, and I noticed you wrote burnt smell previously. Sabino protects the hair so well (it forms a protective barrier around your hair), that if you do it right it won't smell burnt and it won't burn. I did it, in the Sabino link it's on pg 9 (straightened) and I've been doing it for a couple months now and my hair is longer (it grows pretty fast), w/ no breakage or split ends to speak of, and I've worn mine straight since I got Sabino. Now everyone has a right to wear their hair in the natural state, I just notice mine tangles a lot now that it's gotten longer, and as I want to avoid manipulation, the straightening thing has worked to help me maintain and grow more length. So why not just check it out. They're still offering free samples. It only takes a second to email them. I just opened another window in my computer and looked at their email address: [email protected] email name, address and where you heard about product. If you don't, they're gonna email you back and ask anyways so I'm just saving you a step. As for me, Sabino is my crack now, not creamy crack, but crack nonetheless because I love this stuff for shine, protection, and help with humidity issues. And it can be used on curls too (I only did that once but it came out great).

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

My hair doesn't like being straightened either. But it does get straight with the correct tools. But it loves to revert! I don't straighten it much and I don't really like it straight. It looks all flat and boring. It's just not me.

I ordered my sabino samples today

3 years!! Good googa mooga! I'll bet folx will fall out if they see your hair out and straight!!

My Sabino block should be here in a few days!!!

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

This is the main reason why I relax. I sweat often and my hair reverts even while straightening. I like wearing my hair straight more than natural....so it was truly a waste of time and hair damage.

This has been posted before......but thought I'd share again.
Try this method. She gets natural hair silky straight.

Being relaxed that would last until I wet it again. Now if I was natural.....the next day my edges and roots are nappy again. :yep:

So I feel ya!

ETA: Boy I thought I had a mini me. Girl your daughter is you all over again.

I know my hair doesn't like to be straightened...

Let me tell you this story... one time, I blowdried my hair on HIGH, pressed my hair with a pressing comb on 400 degrees Fahrenheit, AND then flat-ironed it with a Chi iron, and guess what? It started to revert within minutes!!! I do live in a humid area, but still, I used a lot of heat and my hair still wanted to coil up. After washing my hair, my hair shrinks back the same, no damage, no straight pieces anywhere. My hair is very resistant.

Re: Has anyone else decided that that their hair just doesn't like to be straightened

when I was little my hair was hard to straighten too, or to stay straight. My mom would take me to the shop and she would warn them, but they didnt believe it lol. It was so bad that when I was like 10, I went to the shop and the lady straightened the back half of my hair first and then she started on the top. By the time she finished the top, the back went back to its natural state lol.. Now my hair is THICK so she decided to take a cigarette break before she did the back again...and when she came back she advised a perm...:ohwell:

but i did get a perm a couple years later, and even though I dont have one anymore...my hair is not as difficult anymore.
