Has anyone done a virgin relaxer on their own head?

please help, stylists scare me:(

Awww me too! Well, after being natural for two years, I decided to give myself a relaxer for my upcoming wedding (in 2003). I used Dark N Lovely :look: because it worked well for me in the past. Well, I divided my hair into four sections and slathered it on, continously smoothed it through and left it on for the maximum amount of time (because my hair is very resistant). Well, unfortunately, my hair was severely underprocessed. I'm almost for certain the reason why I underprocessed is because I didn't have enough relaxer. No problems with scalp irritation or breakage.:ohwell:

So the moral of this story is...make sure you have more than enough relaxer to process your entire head.:)

awww thank you patty cake! How did you see the back, did you use two mirrors? Did you process your nape and edges differently from the rest of your hair? DO you wish you had gone to a stylist instead?

TIA!!

ETA: here are my hair stats is anyone can help

• Hair type: 4b, Virgin hair, 9-12 inches
• Fine strands (easily weighed down), Densely compacted hair, Medium thickness
• Stretches easily
• Very fine and sparse nape, edges, back area
• Not completely sure about porosity, Very elastic when wet
• Not as moisturized as I would like, doesn’t seem to let moisture in easily
• Really prone to splits
• Crown area contains a softer texture while edges are coarser and have kinkier texture
• Would like a texlaxed look and not bone straight
• Worried about relaxer processing time and preventing over processing

I texlaxed my virgin hair after six years natural. I'm a natural 4a and I wanted to get my hair to about a 3c so what I did was leave my Mizani relaxer on for about 7 minutes. It worked! It was an amazing experience. I used a friend to help me see the back and it was easy to apply (after basing my scalp) because I could just slather it on and not worry about just hitting the new growth. I nuetralized in the shower about 5 times! I'm not kidding and that helped because that relaxer was hanging in there. (lol) Then I did a protein conditioner followed by a moisturizing conditioner and a blow dry and curl....My hair was the prettiest that it had ever been! EVER! (smiles)

It still is although I have about 1/2 to one inch of new growth and I'm trying not to texlax again for 5 months.

Oh now I just need to learn how to trim my hair every 16 weeks or so depending on my ends. I plan to grow this hair out and at least if I mess it up I can only blame myself instead of some SHS!

The best advice I can give is to get a friend to help you out for the back/nape to prevent overprocessing. If it is a problem-prone area to begin with, you'll want someone else to help. My best relaxers were the ones I did with the help of a friend :) Good luck!

Well, I'm a fool so I did the feel around method. I even did this with my touchups back in the day and my hair was still straight enough and full (but I don't recommend it due to the risks involved).:look: I applied the relaxer to my least problematic areas, the nape and edges, last. I usually applied the relaxer to the two front sections (minus the edges) first as this is where my hair is the thickest and most resistant. Since I have no positive experiences with beauticians, I'm still glad that I did it at home, at least I had some hair left on my head.:ohwell: If I were to do this again (and I was thinking long and hard about relaxing my hair) I would probably have someone help me and buy enough relaxer. I don't see myself going to the salon no time soon.

Good luck! Don't forget to take a ton of pictures:)

I put i virgin relaxer on my hair after 4 yrs of being natural i used dark and lovely kiddie relaxer for fine type hair ( i still use this for my touch ups because the ph balance is only like a 10) i put my hair in 5 ponytails and started from the middle because my hair is really thick there and did the front last
i had no problems no burning or sore scalp like when i used to go to the hair stylist

BUMP...

RavenIvyGirl, have you relaxed your hair yet? I'm planning on doing this either later this week or next week. I think I'm going to use ORS regular no-lye and put it on for 10 minutes. I'd love to get your imput if you've already gone through it and hear about your experience.
