I did this. It was an accident but it helped out tremendously. I cut my hair around 4 months post to shoulder length. As time went by detangling was easier and I think i would have had a harder time big chopping if I didnt cut it initially. My hair would have been around mbl or wl and I probably wouldnt have wanted to chop then.
One of the cons were, I wasnt used to shorter hair so my styles were limited. For the first week I was lost and had no idea what to do with my hair.
Cinnamin...you transitioned for 26 MONTHS!!!! WOW! Did you heat style often? If I cut to bob length...I will be heat styling. I would like to be a primarily heat styled natural anyway. I'm a 4a...I think. What is your hair type? How did yu wear your hair while transitioning?
I did. Then I went to NL and then I just cut it all off to .5 to 1 inch all around. I only "transitioned" for about 4 months though. I wanted my texture back so I wasn't really into long-term transitioning.
The pro is you go natural ASAP. The con is that if you can't handle very short hair I wouldn't do it. It has become more than I expected at times. At times I am at a lost what to do with my hair. It was fine when it was very short. Now it is in a funky in between stage that is very thick and unruly because it is not long enough to weigh my curls down. Also, as cinnamin said you don't have a lot of style options until it grows out some.
well i wasn't quite BSL but at APL and chopped to neck length. i'm not wearing my own hair tho. I just did it to make sure i don't turn back from my decision to transition. I'm nappily wig wearin.
^^^^ same here. with the lengths at least and the transitioning part too.
I cut mine to neck length in april and now its collar bone length.
Pros: less relaxed hair to deal with.
Cons: styling my hair is a pain. even now at collarbone length i feel like i can't do anything nice with my hair. so I'm stuck with ponytails and tiny buns because i don't do braids or weaves or extensions of any sort.
Just last night I started out just clipping my ends, then I got scissor happy as I began to feel how thick and lush my ends felt. I ended up cutting right at my shoulder. I was all set to transition before my last relaxer then copped out because of tangles and the the 2 textures.
I'm hoping this will make it much easier to detangle on wash days. I plan to wear braid outs and buns; overall just to treat my hair as if I'm already natural. I think I may chop a couple of inches every 2-3 months.
I cut my hair from SL to NL because I wanted less hair to deal with during my transition. At first, I wasn't sure what to do with my hair, but now I am wearing it in perm rod sets and twist perm rod sets---and I LOVE it....kinda looks like a curly fro and makes me feel like I'm already natural...I did let someone else do it the first time and experienced some breakage in the back because of the products she used , but now that I'm doing them on my own, I'm happy...
