Hairstyles on Baldwin Hills (BET) a lot of Naturals??

Hey y'all...

So I was watching Baldwin Hills. Someone told me that girl who used to go on Oprah and model was on it...Gerren (mini Naomi) so I checked it out.

First thing I noticed was HER HAIR!

Then I noticed that all of the girls on that show seem to wear natural styles.

Staci's hair looks natural, Willi, Roqui, Gerren, etc. All have great big, fluffy, long hair and wear it straight sometimes, etc.

I always notice that about girls in LA when I'm out there...naturals and hard presses seem to go hand in hand.

Is it the water? The dry heat that somehow bakes the hair out of the hair follicle? Seriously...what is it?

LA ladies, please chime in.

Has anyone else noticed this about that Baldwin Hills show?

Yep, I noticed that too. I love Gerren's hair. She seems to be at peace with her shrinkage. Roqui's hair is nice too. I just came from L.A. though and didn't see nothin' but weaves.:perplexed If the ladies with real hair were natural, I couldn't tell because it was straight. There's a lot of women in L.A. though, so that's probably not a fair assessment.

yeah since its the summer...a lot of chicks are wearing weaves. as a matter of fact, i took mine out about 2 sundays ago. i, too, wear my hair natural.

but out here, it's either natural, hard press (straight with bangs), or weaves. or the new thing out here is that short Rihanna cut...short in the back, long in the front....

i noticed that too. i knew their hair was gonna be nice since they supposedly have more money than average black people and all but the natural thing took me off guard. I like it.

That's good to know. I've been thinking about relocating to L.A. and would need a good stylist who knows how get these naps straight when I don't feel like doing it myself.:look:

ETA: I'm seeing a lot of those Rhianna bobs up here in Sactown too.

I was wondering that myself. The other day I was reading Essence and they said that there is no humidity in LA so a lot of people are going natural and wearing a press. I was like  How can there be no humidity?

It was very humid the last time I was there, mostly at night though. My press poofed up a bit, and I even had to go back over it with the flat iron a couple times.:ohwell:

That can't possibly be true. I straighten my hair and it's poofy in no time. There is humidity here :yep:

I like Willie's hair but I love Gerren and her hair. I think Gerren has the best hair on Baldwin Hills. Her hair is gorgeous when it's straightened:)

I like the curly bun with the slim headband style Gerren wears. It looks so soft and shiny.

She had really really nice hair back when she was modeling.

I love Willie's bush. It's so purdy and soft looking.

Most of the women I know in Los Angeles, get presses. I went to college there and I was about the only one with a relaxer. Their presses look like relaxers. Lots of body and non-greasy. I live in San Diego now and there is a girl here from L.A. who presses and she is always booked. The technique is just different. They do experience puffiness but once their hair is trained it doesn't puff as much.

I live in LA and press my hair. I don't really have problems with it sweating out or getting poofy because it's rarely humid here, at least compared to most other places. I only really have problems in the middle of summer and when I work out. Other than that, I can go 3 weeks and be fine.

*off topic*- what products/methods do you use to press your hair?

There isn't...unless it rains and that's once in a blue moon. A large part of Los Angeles is basically a desert environment.

The minute I moved to LA, I had to stop relaxing and go natural because of the lack of humidity...no humidity+relaxer=breakage for Luv. Seriously, my hair wouldn't grow past my neck and I was waking up to a pillow full of hair. I dunno if a lot of folks had/have this same problem but natural/flatironed-pressed is definitely the order of the day here.

I live in LA now but I'm from back East. No humidity out this way. Perms (thats what we called it) was a way of life.

Different story out here. I wore a press for years, but my natural hair looked nothing like the girls on that show.

If the show was cast based on natural hair texture, then I wouldn't have stood a chance.

Wow so there's really no humidity out there? That's interesting. But my hair does fine outside in the heat when it's flat ironed here so IDK. As long as I wear my shower cap in the shower I'm good.

I've noticed that too about bw in Cali..unfortunately many of those that relocate elsewhere (say Houston) end up getting a relaxer b/c of the humidity. Pretty tragic:sad:

I'm in AZ and it's a "dry heat" here too. Meaning it's 112 but there's no (i.e. LOW) humidity so all spring through early fall it's great for wearing your hair straight. No poof. I'd only have to do it once a week to once every 2 weeks to keep it looking sleek. It just means that there's not as much moisture in the air here. But the winter is SUPA dry so it can be very damaging. I learned that they hard way last year.

Yep. me too!...I'm an LA native; and we only have humidity from July-September. Those are the only months I don't press my hair. Other than that, my pressed hairs stays straight until I wash it again!
