Hi guys, I've been lurking for about a year and finally decided to stop being cheap and joined. Anyway, I need help on trying to rollerset my hair. I try to rollerset it but it seems that either my hair is too long or my arms are too short, who knows, but when I stretch the hair to try and put it on the roller, I cant ever reach the ends, so I just give up. I have about one inch of new growth, and relaxed hair about an inch below bra strap. I've been doing braid-outs and twist-outs, but my hair takes 800 years to dry. Please give any suggestions you can. I'm not sure if I really want to cut because I cut off around 6 inches last year, and I've decided to go natural again (we'll see how long that lasts, I went natural for about a year and a half last year and got bored and permed again) and I need enough hair to be able to pull back into a ponytail. I usually cut off two inches everytime I get a touch-up, every 2-3months, so my hair has been this same length since I started perming. I used to be able to rollerset my hair myself, but after I went natural, I completely forgot how to do anything with relaxed hair, but then for some reason I decided to relax again. I make no sense...

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I wish I had this problem, girl!!!!

Well first of all, welcome to the forum!!!!! *hugs* Glad you decided to come out of lurkdom and join us.... thats how i started on here too!!!! LOL

Hmmm, in terms of your dilemma.... I cant say I have too much advice/help to offer. But there are PLENTY of women on the forum w/bra strap and longer hair, who self roller set, so Im sure someone will be able to give you some useful tips. Good luck!!!!!

See ya around the forum!!!!! :D

Hi!
Welcome to the forum!:)

I don't have brastrap length hair but have you tried rollersetting upwards? I roll the hair with the ends up and move towards my scalp as opposed to rolling the ends under. I find that I have more control over the hair that way. Also, you can hold your arms down towards your body instead of out in the air perpendicular to the body.

Good luck!

Do you pull the hair forward instead of straight up? When you pull it forward, your arms don't have to be that long and it makes for a tighter set.

Thanks for the quick replies ladies!!

KiniKakes, I'm absolutely loving your hair, I can never do bangs, my family always says it makes me look asian. I don't know how, but that's what they say.

NYHoney, do you mean that I should try to bend over so that the hair hangs down instead of holding it up in the air? If so, I've tried it already, lol, I'm the biggest klutz you will ever find, and almost flipped myself over trying to do that. Oh, I also have no hand-eye coordination. I know, I'm a mess.

If you just want curl on the ends, do several ponytails and roller the ends. Or do one large pony tail and separate in to several rollers, depending on the kind of curls you want. You can use satin, cotton or magnetic. Hope this helps. bonjour

Hmm, I've never tried to just pull forward, I always end up bending over. Thanks, I'll try that next time, but how will I get to the back?

I do the back first. It's the hardest place to reach so if I wait to do it last my arms will definately be tired. I just clip the hair that's not being rolled and pull the section that I'm actually rolling forward - as in towards my crown.

I'm familiar with what you mean. When you have stretched your arms up as far as they can go, wrap the last few inches that you can't reach around the roller. It will be like starting somewhere in the middle of the hair section and wrapping the last few inches around, then you can roll down from there. I hope that makes sense.

No I meant that you should hold the hair as if you were going to flip your ends up (like farah fawcett type of flip) then just roll up to the scalp. Again I don't have brastrap hair, but thats how i do my roller sets. I think if you do a search you can find a tutorial.

Welcome!!!

I can't wait until the day I have your problem!!!

I would try larger rollers. Also you don't have to necessarily pull the hair all the way straight until you have rolled at least some of the ends onto the roller, then you can pull it taut(sp?) and finish rolling it down to your scalp.

I hope that made sense.

Thanks everyone, I managed to do the front by rolling the hair forward, but I couldn't do the back (no hand-eye coordination), so I just put the back in flexirods. The flexirod part came out a little fuzzy, but the rolled part covers it. Thanks again!!

My hair is waist length, so I don't even try to reach the end my hair with the roller. I just place the roller as high as my hand will allow to reach and then I take my other hand and wrap the hair around the roller and then proceed to finish rolling that section. Works for me. Then again, we all know the easier thing is to let someone else do the rolling. Or in my case, wear a bun or other protective style. I hardly ever do roller sets.

I have the same problem. I can't reach my hair in the back. Try the ponytail rollerset. It works real well and you can get to all of your hair with ease. I have pics in my fotki under First Attempt at Rollerset. I wrote how I did it in there.
