Hi ladies
I have been transitioning for seven months now. I found it very difficult after the first two months and for the last two months I have been wearing braids. They are fantastic and gave me a whole new look. They are so great I don't want to take them out! I have read that I should take a two month break from the braids before putting them in again. What styles/techniques should I experiment with next? I should mention that my hair is extremely broken (about two inches in length), especially behind my ears and temples and this is the main reason I stopped using relaxers.

TIA!

I would suggest for your hair length that you try a straw or rod set. I'm sure you could get this done at a hair salon. Call around and ask in your area if they can do this style.

I second the straw set troi! If done correctly, it could probably last the whole 2 weeks while you're giving your hair a break! Get it done at a salon for best results! Good luck and happy transitioning!

I wore my hair in roller sets, twist outs, and braid outs during that transition period.

When I roller set my hair I would be sure to smooth my hair very taught over the roller.

When I wore twist-outs and braid outs I would use tiny perm rods on the ends of my braid or twist to help disguise the straight relaxed ends.

I think wearing your hair in curly or textured styles is the easiest way to transition. Some sistas press their roots but I don't like this method because it doesn't allow you the chance to practice styling your natural hair texture. Sometimes pressing can permanently straighten or damage your new growth.

Good luck on your transition.

NEVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT NATURAL HAIR IS UNMANAGEABLE.

Wigs are my favorite or crochet braids. But I am not sure if doing braids back to back while transitioning has the same effect as it does on relaxed hair, plus it might depend on how much natural hair you have. I just took braids out and I probably could have gotten them again right away because my hair did appear to be strong enough.

2 strand twists might work too.

You can always corn roll your hair with setting lotion, let your hair air dry or sit under the dryer and then take it loose. Shake it out. Spay with some oil sheen, I like "Dark 'n Lovelys Almonds Rain Oil Mist". Clip it up and let some pieces of your hair hand down in the front, it looks very natural and it gives your hair a rest, I've found that this technique is the easiest way for my hair to grow- and it looks cute. You can't go wrong just don't get caught in the rain.

This also works best when my hair has just been deep condtioned.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. A couple more questions. Do I really need to wait two months before putting braids back in or can it be done sooner? Would straw sets/ two strand twists be suitable for an active lifestyle? I will be at the gym about three times a week.

TIA

I don't think you have to wait before putting your braids back in. I have my hair cornrolled and I have them re-done a day ot two after I take them out. Straw sets would not work for my hair after 7 months of transitioning.
