Hair soaking up moisture....way too fast

I know we are supposed to moisturize daily....but if I moisturize my hair at night, why does it feel dry in the morning? I'm not saying it should feel super moisturized, but dry!?! My hair soaks up moisture like nobodys business. I really don't like to manipulate my hair too much so I don't want to have to moisturize too often. My stylist once told me that I have porous hair so maybe that has something to do with it? Anyone else have this problem? Any help/suggetions appreciated!!

I don't have any suggestions, just sympathy. I have the same problem. I've tried sealing conditioners with oil, CW and keeping a scarf on my head any time I'm not in public. I would like to see what suggestions you get.

You may want to use Roux Porosity Control to help with your problem.

When you apply your moisturizer do you let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to allow your HAIR to soak it up?

A lot of times we moisturize then apply our scarf quickly, but indeed it is our SCARVES that is soaking up all the moisture before our hair can.

Moisturize, comb through (if you use a comb, if not leave it be) leave it in for about 15 minues, THEN cover with your scarf.

If that doesn't work, time for a new moisturizer!

Thanks dicapar :)

alexstin...although I heard of porosity control products, I never thought about picking one up. Maybe I will give it a try. It just dawned on me that the reason why my hair dries so quickly may be due to a porosity problem...I was really just thinking out loud! I will be on the lookout for this product though....thanks!

MizaniMami...girl, you are absolutely right. Usually when I apply moisture, I just tie my scarf right after to kinda slick the new growth down. The scarfs do get a litte wet but I'm thinking my hair will just soak it up throughout the night. :look: I will definately wait a little longer next time!

Just a suggestion....after you put the moisturizer in your hair at night put on a plastic cap and sleep in it and see if that works. It's similar to the baggie method.

Right!!! :yep: I used to have this problem because my hair is porous (always has been) so letting my moisturizer soak in....and then applying some more if my hair needs it is important. When I roller set my hair at night, I can't always moisturize my hair in the morning (as the curls may be ruined), so I must moisturize well at night. So, I start moisturizing as soon as I get home from work and apply moisture about twice before bed.

But, if I'm planning to wear my hair up or in a ponytail, my main moisturizer to S-Curl, which works so well I only have to apply it once a day. So, finding the right moisturizer for your hair is extremely important.

A good leave-in goes a long way, too. :)

Hey girl I 've had this same problem and plus I'm 4b just like you so I KNOW exactly what you're going through. It took me months to over come this problem but I finally did and here's what helped...

I deep conditioned every other day, faithfully wore my baggy on my ends with my holllow bun covering it, and at nighttime wore a plastic shower cap with my hair moisturized underneath. I was also using Roux's Porosity control about once a month, although it didnt seem to do much.

PS. I sent you a PM:D

Let me try again, i took to long last time

What i did to fix my problem was find out that the ultimate moisture my hair craved were creamy moisturizers that contained glycerin, deep conditioning w/baggies, and to be moisturized 2x daily-so i do this in 2 ways when im in braids, and when im wearing my hair down.
( I also discovered my hair does not like to be sealed w/oil, it just soaked all the moisture out of my hair for some reason -all except coconut oil
AND you might want to try falxseed and more water)

In braids i found was the best thing at first because it just ave my hair time to do nothing but receive moisture
Daily i would
Morning:-moisturize with s-curl or even better carefree
Night:-condioner, and baggie all night ( its like cowashing & deep cond. daily!) -try it u will be amazed after a month

Wearing my hair:
-morning-moisturize w/a spray that has glycerin or is a really good moisutrizer ( vo5 detangle, elasta qp h-two...)
-Night-moisturize w/a creamy moiturizer w/glycerin ( ab shea butter, ab olive oil, profectiv breakfree)

Then 1x a week sleep with the baggie and condioner, and wash the next day
And if you have hair like me, after i wash it, it takes alot of moisture for it to get back to normal, like it suckes it up for the first 2 days-, so i had to find a good washing regimin that my hair could handle
(-washing and drying with cool water and settings helped me & not washing to much with shampoo. Daily cowashing was good for my hair, but not washing w.shampoo every 3 days, so i just said forget the bull, and wash and deep condition1x a week.)

It works wonders for me! My hair soaks up moisture like a sponge especially in the summer months.

Thanks ladies so much for the help!!!

EMJazzy I have been doing the full head baggie as of lately but I think I was applying too much product that my hair was a bit too wet in the morning...but still when my hair dried it feels dry and not soft and moisturized

Legend...I just picked up some s-curl today! I hope it works wonders for me like it has for some of you

lexi...DC every other day?!?! wow thats a lot....oh and thanks for the PM! I will be incorporating some of your methods...you already know how i feel about your progress :)

ThinNnapppy...thats interesting...I dont think I ever had a good experience when I tried to oil my hair to seal in moisture....it seems like when I don't oil it it stays softer. I also wash and DC 1X a week

nikki-me too girl and i live in florida so you know how that is...I guess I need to be more consistent with the baggying

I may have to try sleeping with a cap. Would saran wrap work? The elastic in the shower caps irritate me..I couldn't imagine sleeping with it.

i might get blasted for this..

but what about GREASE! after your moisturizer of course.

make sure your moisturizers frist ingrediet is WATER/AQUA otherwise it just aint a moisturizer...false advertising i know, but thats how it is.

Are you applying your moisturizer 2 dry hair? i can only personally use moisturizer on damp/wet hair. thats why i only moisturize when on wash day. try spraying your hair with cold distilled water and then scrunching in your moistuizer...this really will help! I also take a flax OIL supplement and use grease on my ends after moisturizing, this is the best thing i ever re-discovered... w/out flax i'm scared 2 see how my hair is. if ur not into flax, get some oily fish into your diet.

scurl ruined my hair, but its worked for alot of people...

satin or silk hair wraps, scarves, bonnets will NOT drink the moisture from your hair. my hair was dry liek a bone when i combed airdried hair..could it be that? i used to moisturize everyday and my hair was stil ldry, i just didn't understand. my hair was very pourous, but you can teach your hair NOT to be. pre-pooing with an oil is a good idea. my hair has fixed up to the point where i only moisturize once per week! if sum1 told me that last year i would laugh and tell them they are crazy and black hair could never survive on once a week moisturization...but its true, only if u use heat moisture everyday is needed. airdried hair should not crave moisture, if it has been prepped after washing! hope that helps!

This is quite true!!! :yep: Good looking out, Candy_C!! :)

I dampen my hair before applying S-Curl (which I spray in my hand and then apply for more control. I don't use much because it can make the hair mushy if applied too liberally.) Adding distilled water to your hair does make a huge difference and you use less product so your hair is moisturized, but not weighed down. :yep:

A little tip I picked up from my stylist: If you don't want to purchase distilled water, just fill your spray bottle with tap water, clip the end of the spray tube about an inch, and let the bottle sit for a while. Don't agitate the bottle before using because most of the minerals from the water will settle to the bottom of the bottle where the tube no longer reaches. ;)

Thanks for the tips! Im too scurred to put grease on my hair  . Maybe the ends to seal....but thats as far as I'm willing to go for now....Normally when I apply moisture it is to dry hair unless I just finished washing. I ususlly use NTM. My hair feels dry when I air dry my hair and also when I conditioner wash. The only time my hair feels real soft is when I DC... I did prepoo once and I really liked the results....I have to start remembering to do it more often.

I'm sorry about scurl ruining your hair! I just bought a bottle yesterday...it made my hair feel really soft....I hope it nothing bad happens :perplexed .

I'm glad to hear that the satin scarfs wont drink the moisture from my hair....thats what I have been using

I can not IMAGINE moisturizing once per week...I will try the cold water with the scrunching method....not a bad idea.....but you dont think this would dilute the moisturizer?

No advice to give but this has been such an informative thread!!!

lexi, with this deep conditioning schedule, how long did it take you to notice your hair was less dry. That's a lot of moisture!!! I don't know if I'll be able to deep condition every other day but it would be great if I could.

Great Tip....I purchase enough distilled water for drinking purposes and to have to puchase even more for my hair!
