Hair products and expiration dates.....

EMJazzy

Happily retired
I went to the local RiteAid over the weekend and I purchased a heat protectant and a leave in conditioner....it wasn't til I got home and read a thread here (forgot which one) that you should always check the dates on the bottom of the bottles....well how about the date on the bottom of the heat protectant said 2003? Well I ran, not walked, back to the store to take it back....I explained to the manager that I had NO intention of putting something on my hair that was 4 years old :nono: ....when I checked the rest of the bottles to replace the one I purchase ALL of the dates were between 2002 and 2005 with the exception of ONE bottle of heat protectant that had 2006 on the bottom of it (of course that was the one I snatched).

Do you ladies think that the companies sent outdated products on purpose since it was a RiteAid in a black neighborhood? Do they send outdated products to the white neighborhoods?

I've never looked for an expiration date on a hair product before. I'll have to start doing that.

Your question about whether this is done on purpose in black vs white neighborhoods is an important one -- I hope not, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Was this an expiration date or just a date for when the batch was manufactured? :scratchch I don't think I've ever seen an expiration date on a product before.

Most products are chock full of preservatives and many have shelf lives of years and years. The average shelf life of a shampoo is about 3 years. Natural products have shorter lives. When in doubt, you can always call the product company with the serial numbers and they can tell you the batch number, exactly when the product was bottled, and how much shelf life it has remaining.

The heat protectant (smooth n shine silk 'n sleek heat protect) that I purchased this weekend says: D4041-6-2006.... on my Fantasia IC hair polisher (the blue bottle) says: B/B/12/2009 0127 (which leads me to believe that it's good til 2009) the Olive moisturizing serum says: B/B/09/2009 2706 and the Fantasia frizz buster says: B/B/11/2008 3325.....that's the reason why I figure at some point they must expire.

The bottom of my ApHOGEE gloss therapy says: 9969481179...I have NO IDEA what the heck that means. :perplexed The bottom of my Fantasia heat protectant says: B/B/12/2008 3505

I couldn't find any kind of numbers(expiration or not) on the leave in conditioner. :ohwell:
