Hair is sooo dry after being relaxed

Hey girls. I just got my hair relaxed yesterday at the salon and she used Affirm (mild). The last time I relaxed was in Sept. so she put it on the majority of the length of my hair because she said it was underprocessed. It turned out fine as far as being straight and no burn but...it seems very very dry /images/graemlins/confused.gif I haven't styled it yet because I want to wash it with neutralizing shampoo tomorrow (to make sure all of the perm is out) but my question is, is it supposed to feel dry like this???

Hi Kia,/images/graemlins/wave.gif

I'm glad you like the Affirm. I got the Mizani relaxer yesterday and it turned out nice. If your hair had any relaxer left in it yesterday, washing it tomorrow wouldn't help because any damage would already be done by now. Remember that exceeding the time limit with a chemical will damage your hair quickly. It doesn't take much time. If it makes you feel better to wash with a neutralizer, then do so. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

As for the dryness, it is to be expected that your hair may feel a bit dry after a chemical application. Relaxers dry the hair, so the best thing to do is combat this with constant moisturizing. I usually spend the week after a relaxer moisturizing the heck out of my hair. I don't really style much for that week. Yesterday when I came home, I grabbed my Keracare oil moisturizer with Jojoba oil and smoothed some in my hair. I usually moisturize 2-3 times a day anyway, but particularly now when the relaxer is fresh.:)

did she rollerset afterwards or blowdry and then tong? in anycase always ask for a rollerset after a relaxer cos the heat is too much for the hair after the relaxer. in my experience the 1st 3 days after a relaxer is when my hair is nice and silky. never mind, just moisturise and oil the hell out of it before it breaks for you and lay off the heat as well. also shampoo with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner and lay off heat for as long as possible unless absolutely necessary.

Pebbles, i am a bit confused. are you saying that if she knows or feels some relaxer was left in the hair she should still leave the relaxer in the hair since the damage has already been done?

No she didn't do anything to it afterwards. I asked her not to. She just put some Paul Mitchell stuff (not sure what it was) and some Keracare (hair grease) and put it in a ponytail but as it was drying it seemed kind of hard..but I'm not sure why (especially the ends)?? Maybe I'll do a hot oil treatment tonight /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Oh no! She should wash it out, but my point is that the damage will have already been done. 1-3 days with any residue from a relaxer will cause damage to hair; no doubt about it. If you have a relaxer and you feel that there is still some relaxer left in it, you should wash it right away, or until you are comfortable that all of it is gone. If you go to a salon for a relaxer, and you feel that there may still be some residue left from the relaxer, you should wash as soon as you get home. Waiting a few days will be too late.
