Hair Growth Oil Suggestion

I have been looking for an organic hair oil that promotes growth. The Vatika oil I am crazy about is great for moisture and root strength (henna and amla), but I wanted a more fragrant oil for my scalp massages.

There has been lots of talk about hair growth oils lately since Sherrylove shared her oil recipe and BlkMane shared those awesome articles about the people with alopecia. I just wanted to share two ideas with you ladies.

Pretty Natural, INC makes a good comprehensive oil for all those who don't want to find and mix things. It has Jojoba, Olive Oil, Castor Oil, Vitamin E, Rosemary Extract, Essential Oils of Rosemary, Lavender, Sage, and Chamomile all in one little jar. They are based in Newport News, Virginia which is one town over from Hampton so I can walk into most health stores and buy their products. But they have a web page you can order from. They are a very tiny company, but they are Black owned and make products that are geared towards women of color. The stuff is a bit expensive but extremely potent. I think I'm going to start mixing mine in almond oil.

The other oil is by Better Botanicals, which is more on the ayurvedic side. They don't have the ingredients on the website, but I have read the bottle in the stores. It has almost all of the popular Indian herbal remedies for hair loss, thin hair, etc.

Just a suggestion for all the lazy gals who want everything without doing anything. I hear ya! Long live internet ordering! /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That would be me!!

Thanks for posting this I am going to check it out now.
I also like the fact that you say it's potent. That means a little goes a long way.

Thanks for posting this BrightEyes. I never knew that the Vatika oil had henna and amla in it. I may look into this because I'm crazy about Henna! Thanks again for posting.

Thanks for the info Brighteyes. I mix my oils and mainly use them for pre-shampoo treatments. It would be nice to have some pre-made oil though, and that one sounds like a good blend. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for posting this, Brighteyes. I'm always interested in finding ways to pamper my scalp the lazy way. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif I'm going to check it out.

It sounds good, like the mix I use now:
olive oil, jojoba oil, castor oil, rosemary, thyme, cedarwood, silica, Vit E and lavendar. It's really good and keeps my hair soft.

I have never really been keen on having one oil for both scalp and hair cos essential oils can stink a bit and its too much for the hair. what i have done is get 2 small spray bottles and make up oil for the hair and oil for the scalp.

for the hair oil cocktail i have combined oils which are known for the properties of strengthening, thickening conditioning and softening both the hair and especially new growth

this is my recipe for my hair oil cocktail

unrefined coconut oil (softenes new growth)
jojoba oil (moisturise, condition and improves elasticity of the hair with consistent use)
castor oil (softens, thickens and rejuventes roots)
d-panthenol (thickens and shines)

i have had excellent results with this when i spray it on my hair from roots to ends before airdrying, i add no essential oils cos they cost a lot to be used on the hair like that and i feel they benefit the scalp more than the hair

As with WGO and the Carolyn Gray oil the mixture is very rich so i use sparingly.

this is my recipe for the stimulating scalp oil cocktail. I added oils known for stimulating a nice healthy scalp circulation

rosemary, lavender and peppermint oil (stimulate hair cells and growth, relieve dryness and itching)
castor oil (stimulates thicker hair growth)
wheatgerm oil (rich source of vit E good for fading edges)
jojoba oil (similar to scalp oil, dissolves excess sebum, conditions and moistens scalp)

i use this mainly on my edges but of course, it is also good for weekly or nightly scalp massages. as we all know other essential oils can go in, clary sage, cedarwood, ylang, ylang etc... i get a nice tingling feeling esp after a hair wash /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

the spray bottle makes application very very easy. i think i will post this on the hair recipe board /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually mine smells really good. My boyfriend always spends extra time hugging me when I use it. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Also it depenends on what kind of hair you have, and what your hair goals are. Some like me would not need to "soften" new growth because there is no texture difference on my head. Also, you are not supposed to use EO right on on the scalp. You need a carrier oil, and that's what the jojoba is.

The one you posted is almost the exact same one as the one I posted.

i think you misunderstood, my recipe doesnt put EOs directly on the scalp, they are dissolved in COs. plus i prefer to mix my own stuff than buying it mixed. cedarwood does smell though, lol. if yours works for you by all means stick to it. i was only suggesting what I do. its not by force to try it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was confused because you said "essential oils can stink a bit and its too much for the hair". My whole point was, if you use the right amount in a carrier oil, you shouldn't have that issue.

how much eos to carrier oils. i have no idea, i usually just put it in the carrier oils. so how much do YOU use and how do you know how much?

Caroly grays oil has eos in it and it is excellent for my scalp before a hot oil but the smell is loud for my hair (esp. if applied on it dry). that is what gave ne the idea of separating the hair and scalp oils for myself. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Like I said before, I'm lazy so I don't mix jack squat. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif I buy my scalp oils already made because it's cheaper and easier. The hair oils I buy use organic materials, which are very expensive when purchased individually. My hair can only use oil if it has little or no synthetic properties. So, to make a long story short, I'm better off buying hair and scalp oil.

As far as mixing the oils is concerned that all depends on the person using them and the CO/EO involved. For the most part, you use 8-10 drops of EO for every 1-2 ounces of CO. Sometimes if you use more than one CO you have to watch it. For instance, if you use more than 15% vitamin E it might overpower the other scents, as Vitamin E is strong. But Grapeseed Oil is odorless, so the amount can go as high as you want. And some oils, like Avocado, should only be added to strong CO like jojoba or castor. Also, a person with an oil scalp might need more rosemary and less jojoba, while a dry scalped person will most likely need the reverse.

How do I know this? Easy. I went to the health store and asked the people who worked there. Most catalogues that sell EO and CO often have information regarding proper mixing somewhere inside.

Great suggestions!! I enjoy mixing oils so I'm printing out the various blends that people post so that I can try them in the future.

Hi, I have used this oil. It also contains shea butter.
It is similar to Sweetcocoa's recipe and, I think that you can make it yourself for less $$$. But if you want to support a sister I say order it. It is good stuff.
