 Good Morning ladies

I have been browsing LHCF for sometime now (almost a year and 1/2) and from some of the threads I nread I have had some very good results. I have tried MTG, WGO, washing, conditioning, wrapping and streching relaxers, which all worked wonders for me... My problem is this. A years ago the entire back of my hair broke off. I did not understand why. That is when i started doing research and stumbled across LHCF... after reading some of the threads I learnt a lot and started taking care of my hair more... I started my hair journey on May 18th, 2005 and after about streching for almost 6month i put a relaxer in my hair...i realized that my hair was so healthy and was not as damaged as before.. the back of my hair also grew in really nice.... my hair was making good progress, but all of a sudden the back started breakin off again... So i decided to get a sew in and see if that would help.... it didnt so i decided to try braids but that made the situation even worse.... when i say i have no hair in the back anymore i mean i have no hair.... looks like i cut a low cut... i am so stressed out over this and dont know wat to do.... i spke to a good friend who said i should go get my hair cut but i am really scared to do this... the rest of my hair is long enough to cover the back, but since my hiar is not thick its looks spac in the back.... i was thinkin about maybe getting a sew in and trying the same regime i tried a year and half ago and see wat happens... any advise ladies please:confused:

What did you do to grow your hair out before, don't stress about it you did it before you can do it again.:) [I sound like Puffy:rolleyes:)

What's your regimen at the moment? You said you stretched 6 months did you put your hair in a protective (weave, braid, bun etc) after the first couple of months? Some ladies here have reported their hair starts breaking/shedding (I think at the demarcation line between relaxed and new growth) if they stretch too long.....

bumping for more responses...

How soon did your hair start breaking after you put in the relaxer? It seems like the relaxer may be the culprit and imo you may have been over processed(left relaxer on area too long, didn't properly neutralize or completely wash out relaxer..etc) and that's what may have caused the breakage. Those are just my thoughts based on the info provided. Evidently, your hair thrived when you were stretching. What type of products are you using? What type of treatments are you doing and how often are you using them?

I've also read on here about ladies not relaxing their napes or are alternating the times they actually relax that area and their hair thrived as a result.

Is it possible it came from friction? How do you wrap your hair at night. Do you tie up you hair with satin or silk scaves & bonnets only? What are you using to moisturize? Are you sealing with oil after you moisturize. How often do you wash? When you relaxed did you make sure to let the neutralizer sit for a few minutes after you shampoo with the nuetralizer? Are you curling, flat ironing or blow drying? If so are you doing using a thermal spray?

Protein helps me with reducing breakage..balancing that out with moisture and deep conditioning with heat.

I also skipped relaxing the nape(once) in order to save that part of my hair. Overprocessing sounds like the culprit for your nape damage. Try not putting relaxer on the nape everytime you relax.. so the nape can have a chance to recover...instead just apply it on your nape every other time. HTH:)

this is what I was thinking. I would go back to that old regimen that grew your hair out the first round, and not relax the nape area. Also how are you rinsing/neutralizing that area? it very important to neutralize well even by letting the neutralizing poo sit on the hair for 5-10 min. each poo so make sure it gets to the center and stops the relaxing process, if not it could result in breakage and damaged hair overtime.

I know there are some women on LHCF who don't relax their napes- do you think this could be an option?[/quote]

great questions! anyone or a combination of these could be the culprit.

I believe that you might need to go back to the regiment that you had that was working when you stretched for 6 months. However, this time do the nape last and don't let it sit that long or simply don't do the nape as often. Sorry to hear about your damage...

Ladies thank you so much for the advise.... well during the six months i was wearing protective styling this is how it went:

I worse a sew in for a month... when i took it out i would poo my hair, deep condition and give my air a protein treatment... I would then wait a week and then put braid in my hair... when i did put braids in my hair i would ask the lady not to braid my edges since they are very weak... while in braids i would wash and deep condition my hair every weekend.... ater the braids came down i would do the same thing i do when the sew in came out.

products i was using: I started uing the Doo Grow Line.. the anti-thinning and their deep conditioner.... Olive Oil is the perm i use to this day... after a few months on doo grow products i wiched to the olive oil product line and my hair thrived very well.... also during the six months i used MTG whih helped thicken and grow my hair

But my problem is this.... do i go get it permed and cut (its been 3mnth since my last perm) by this lady my sister recom. she seems to b ood cuz my sisters hair is really thriving.... or do i go back to wat i was doing a year ago... and see if it grows it back ??

i have some pictures you can look at http://public.fotki.com/HairObsessed/

This sounds like alopecia to me. This is a pretty common disease where the hair will come out in patches. If I were you I'd do a search to find out more. I have a friend with the same issue.

don't cut it and don't get another sew-in. keep doing deepconditioners, protein treatments and daily moisturizers. if it's still breaking you must go to a dermatologist. it might be hormonal.

As you can see by reading the faq's the hair falls out and grows back. I hope this helps... I could be wrong but it sounds exactly like the problem my friend was having, only her hair would fall out around the front sections of her hair. You should check all avenues of possibilities especially since you say you've been taking care of your hair.

I totally agree with you. It appears from the patches in the front, this is exactly what is going on. I suggest you see a professional.

Hey. you sound like me browsing for that long. :D You could be stretching too long. While you may have a beautiful head of hair and length for the time being, the full results (good and bad) may not start to show til later. Some people can only go from 2 months to three or four months comfortably. Then again, it could be fine for you to stretch that long because you know just what to do & which products to use--which means the problem is something else. I'll bet you sleep with a silk/satin head scarf already so maybe you need to do every thing that you were doing, but you need to go a step further and do two to four braids for bedtime AND moisturize lightly again for bedtime. My friend Jonie used to do that every night and she kept her midback length and it grew. She said she HAD to do it. Or you may need to start doing a protein treatment followed by a moisturizing treatment two times a week. (Can't exactly remember what u said about protein in yo reg.) I am sure you will figure out just what to do.:) HTH

added:
Now that I think about what the other ladies said, you probably do have a condition/problem that needs medical treatment. Go to the derm. and definitely keep those braids (with added hair) and sew-ins out of yo hair. Some people's hair break easily with any type of tension-causing hair styles even if you think the pressure may be light.

I know that for me the middle right side of the back of my head would always fall out, as if on cue. My hair would start to grow and start getting length and then it would all fall out again in the same area. I get rid of that problem when I went natural, no more bald spots anywhere ever again.

That's what I was going to say. It sounds liek yoru hair was thriving while the chemicals weren't present. I would consider going natural. It sounds like the relaxers are aggravating the problem.

i tried but i was not bold enough to go all the way... i read the article and i am planing to go see a derm. sometime 2morro if i can get an appointment... but if not i have decided to go see a profesional hair stylist have her figure out wats best and then i am going to let someone take care of my hair... its a sacrafice on a poor college students pockets... but i am tired of spending time and money(buying products) and my hair to keep falling out its sooo depressing... and i am so self conscious about my hair... i guess because it has been drilled in my hair that unless u have long hair u are not beautiful :-(

I have not read all of the responses so forgive me if anyone else has already mentioned this. Could it be Turtlenecks? Are you noticing the same breakage during winter? My girlfriend noticed this with her hair and when I visit the City in the winter, cold brittle air and turtle necks just dont mix. I had to slather my nape with Elasta QP Mango butter every day to fight against the air.

Good Luck!
