Haha! Poor Conair! I'm in the market for a crimping iron...

so I decided to check out Amazon and came across Conair's flat iron/crimping iron.

It's not in stock but I decided to read the reviews just in case I decided to order it at a later date. These are two of the reviews I found:

1) I had this straighter for a long time now and its making me really mad. It takes two hours to make my hair look sorta straight and that’s after I go over every piece of hair about 5 times. I wish I could give this 0 stars...And it doesn’t even deserve that much. It made my hair look horrible almost every time I used it and now I have to spend more money to buy a decent straighter. So don’t buy this unless u plan on giving it to someone u really hate to get them mad and aggravated when they try using it. I only used the crimp once and it made me look like....a poodle I guess. A poodle with a really bad perm....so yeah. Use ur money and buy something useful. Like supplies to make a sign. A sign that says how horrible this product is...and stand outside a Conair building with it. Cuz they deserve it for making me so mad. lol.

2) This thing is so old school I’m surprised the instructions don't say to heat it on an open flame with your "supper," a la little house on the prairie!! It takes FOREVER to heat up, and only the tiny crimpy attachment works. I sold this a couple of months ago at our garage sale; the lady wouldn’t give me TWO bucks for it! When you check the wattage/voltage on this compared to my current flat iron (Revlon 20 dollar cheapie from target) it is like, then times less power. Don’t waste your time AND/OR money on this Studebaker of hair accessories!

Can anyone recommend a good hair crimper? Thanks! :)

That is the WORSE flat iron  !! It would make my hair fall off like crazy. I still wonder why I'm not bald.

For real? I also saw a review for a Solano Sapphire iron which also has four different plates and the ladies said that the hair gets CAUGHT between the plate and the iron itself

I"m thinking of getting SS's basic crimper and see how that works.

I hear crimping is very drying to the hair. Any thoughts?

Sorry that happened, Milky :(

Blossssom, wouldn't you have to hold it down long enough for it to crimp? IF so

Can you do a braid or twist out to give you similar results?

I have never used one so I cannot suggest a model, but I do think yoiur hair would look cute with that look.

Yea I agree with Bmore. I believe she is talking about the Vidal Sassoon Fashion Waver. There were some raves about on another hair forum. HTH:)

Bwaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!! :lachen: :lachen:

I use a crimper I got for $20 at Rite Aide I think it's by Vidal Sasson. Anyway, I love it to death and it gets hot pretty quickly.

I think the Maxiglade is worse than using the crimp iron. Even if you use a heat protectant. I only use mine on the weekend if I go out and I leave it for 2-3 days. I use some NTM to keep it moist.

Thanks you guys... I must be traveling back to the eighties looking for a crimper. They don't seem to be popular anymore.

To answer Honey's questions, yes, you do have to hold it down and that may explain why they don't get very hot. However, it doesn't sound like they get hot enough to do anything from what I'm reading :(

And no braiding my hair every night or every other night is too time consuming and I tried a twist out one time and looked like Medusa when I took them down the following morning, so that's not an option.

Oh well... I guess I'll keep wearing it the way I am unless I want to flat iron :p

Does your hair be dry, though?

Yea, those comments the reviewers made were hysterical. I swear! :lachen: I loved the Studebaker crack! Ha!

Maybe that's why the Conair has been discontinued ! :)

I tried looking for a crimper at Rite-Aid, Long's and Walgreen's... no crimper.

I guess they're gone.

Yes. If I don't use the NTM and Olive Oil Spray, I feel like my hair would catch a flame and combust. I have to constantly keep it moisturized. But that's how my hair feels in general so I dont really know if I can blame the iron...

Bloss, the reason why you might not be finding one is because they call it a waving iron. Let me see if I can find the one I have online...

ETA: I have this one. I got it from Target for $20.00 a few years ago.

http://www.amazon.com/Vidal-Sassoon-Professional-3%252dBarrel-Waver/dp/B000065DK4/ref=sr_1_7/102-8680650-0973713?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1176327024&sr=1-7

I also have a bigger one that makes more like "s" waves instead of crimps. It's also by vidal sassoon. I also got that one from Target last year sometime. I believe it was 14.99 but no more than 19.99.

I also bought some VS curling irons from the same line as the waver for about $14.99 from Target and I've been very pleased with them. I've spent good money in the past to end up with cheap curling irons (that eventually fall apart or stop working) but these have been the best by far.

Yeah two companies use to make the one's they sale @ Rita Aide...Vidal Sasson and this other one I forget. My first one broke ( I had it for 2 yrs) and when I went back to buy another one, they only had the Vidal Sasson (this was last year) so I wouldn't be surprised if they stop making that one too.

oh well. When it breaks I guess I have to learn how to do a braidout.

Um hmmm...

I guess I'll post a thread asking how to do a braidout.

Oh, by the way, the iron is probably drying your hair out. A woman told me that at another board today.

Thanks, Flyggirll... I'm going to check out Target tonight!

Tell me, though, is your hair dry after using it?

Thanks again! :)

Sure np Bloss. :) I used it mostly on my weaves with mousse or wrap lotion and it left it soft and not crunchy. Without the mousse the crimps wouldn't be as defined as I liked. I guess it was something with the weave hair.

On my own hair, I'd just make sure my hair was dry, clean and moisturized. I rubbed some serum on each section before I crimped. I nixed the mousse bc it would rewet my hair. That and I didn't want to be sizzling my own hair. :perplexed It didn't make my hair dry though. It would last for almost a week as long as I covered it when I got in the shower. I would add more serum or spray some oil sheen on it if it started to look dry. HTH...

Thanks, hon...

I ordered the Revlon waver from Amazon yesterday.

I guess the key is to oil each section every time.

More work :(

Well you're going to have to section it to crimp it anyway so I guess it's not so bad... :ohwell: Did you get the big one or the small one? The big one gets you done pretty fast...
