Growth without protective styles

My hair grow without protective styles, however I don't retain as much length as I do when I do wear protective styles. I love wearing a bun to retain my growth, I do get bored with the bun but then I think about all the progress I made . I don't do the donut bun I just make a ponytail and twist the ends and wrap the hair around and add a scrunchie. I wear a bun seven days a week for the most part..

I am with you as far as the bun, I would get bored with a bun. Thats why I prefer the curly pinned up look, but if I HAVE to tuck my ends in order to retain length, I don't know :nono: what I'ma do. I work in an office setting and wear dressy attire so the bun looks a little plain in a suit. I may just have to figure out how to jazz it up.

So Low Manipulation, or having your hair off the shoulders is not a Protective Style???

I wear protective style 50% of the time I wanted to say more but wasn't really sure. My hair is normally in a ponypuff. but somes I get it as straight as I can add leave in and twist it in a bun and add a clip to it. I ordered 8 fashion clips off ebay and wear my hair that way. The only thing is my face is very boring with all my hair pulled back. ( everything is not for everybody) so I have to come up with ways to make it still look cute and protective. I twist the front ( take it out when dryed) or I comb it in a way to give me a hump up top and then wear it up. I prefer protective styles because I am not worried about whats happening to my hair. If I was to get it straighten and wear it down my mind will be on my ends all day long. I will constantly be checking them. No I rather wait and save that for a special occassions. I think hair grows without them but I think you spend more time trimming and not achieving the growth you expected.

Protective styles to me not only means your ends are protected but also means that the hair is not manipulated (and in my case my) until wash day or longer. Some people would call this a combo of protective styling and no to low-manipulation. But to me, protective styling includes low manipulation. Coupled with no heat, my hair is retaining length very well. I started MN 2 days ago and will be tracking the progress in the front and in the back.

Disclaimer: I rock hairdos that most people would really not want to wear though. I've had people here straight up tell me, 'what did you do with your hair now?' (in a negative way). The cutest hairdo I wear is a bun and maybe my twist-outs. Otherwise, my ends are stringy so even my twists aren't up to my statndards. Honestly, if I was in a different work environment, I probably wouldn't get away with it either so I'm riding this one all the way to MBL!

I tried the whole protective style thing but it didn't work out for me. I get sooo bored with buns and I was concerned about my hair breaking where the band was from wearing it back so much. :ohwell:I like the flexirods but a hairstyle isn't worth losing my sleep at night trying to sleep "cute".:nono: I had a full sew-in last summer but my hair got so tangled when i took it out I think I lost most of my progress.:wallbash: So, I dont know how to wear my hair now. I'm aiming for BSL by June so I know wearing it down everyday will hinder that....still thinking.....

Decisions Decisions :perplexed

I have done great considering I come from a BONE STRAIGHT relaxer root to tip every 8 weeks, curling iron every other day *wasn't hot enough till i splashed water and it sizzled*, no moisturizer *bouncy hair*. From that to wash, DC, Cowash, moisturize, moisturize, NO HEAT *i even airdry*, and wearing my hair pinned up off my shoulders everyday~ NOW I gotta tuck the ends :look:.

And you're right crimsonvixen, I was concerned about breakage where the ponytail holder was, even the ends for that matter, when I bunned not pulling the hair the whole way thorough the band.
But hey what do I know... I just got here *lhcf* :lachen:

i've heard people say rollersets is a protective style. why is that? i wear rollersets but i dont see how it is a protective style when the hair is out/down

I always thought buns and pony's were protective styles... I guess I got alot to learn
I believe they are..I where my own hair/bun and my hair is tucked away..this is a protective style because my ends aren't exposed

I wear ponytails over 75% of the time. I twist or braid the ponytail at night to protect the ends, then I let it loose in the morning and moisturize the ends. I've had no problems.

Your twist in a bun are nice DDTEX!!! :yep:

I'm just gonna finish out this 12 weeks with the Low Maintenance style and see how that works.

I'm not in the elements to much, i go from my house to the car and I park underground in a garage and sit in an office all day. As long as my ends are moisturized and sealed i don't see the harm. But we'll see. Next 12 weeks I'ma hide my ends.

What do the girls that don't have hair long enough to tuck do???

I'm on of those girls who don't have hair long enough to tuck and I find that since my hair isn't long enough to tuck, that my ends aren't touching anything to be a problem. I moisturize my ends and seal them and then I leave them alone because I bantu knot or something. Right now I have kinky twists, but Sareca's bit scared me! I want to take these out and see how my ends look!!!

That's why i didn't think me not hiding my ends was unprotective, and I figured me having my hair up off my shoulders protective as long as they were moisturized and sealed. The shorter haired girls can do it so should the longer.

I could just kick myself :wallbash: to think that 12 weeks of growth could be harmed cause I didn't protect my ends.

Next 12 weeks I'm going to protect my ends to see if I notice a difference. Hopfully I'm one of the gals that it won't be a problem either way. We'll see....:ohwell:
