Growth pattern???

Do you believe we have predetermined growth pattern? Is there anything we can do to change them if, in deed, we do have them?

My hair does not grow well in the back. In the past year I've gained 5-to-6 inches of hair everywhere else on my head but in the back, only one inch. I was looking at my mother's hair this weekend and I noticed her hair is much longer in the front than the back. Now, I remember her talking about her hair not growing in the back. Can my hair buddies tell me, what do you think??

Diamond lady,

I have been having the same problem but the hair back there is now starting to catch up. Here is what I did.

First, do you have a relaxer and do you get new growth back there? If you do, then that's proof that that area is definately growing. The problem may be that you are just not keeping the lenghth (the ends are breaking).

When you touch up your hair, do you start in the back? I used to. I literally used to start in the kitchen.

I also used to touch up that area when I touched up all other areas of my head. What I was doing was overprocessing my back because the relaxer stayed on there the longest. (The longest and healthiest part of my hair is also the section that I touch up last--see what I'm saying.)

I only touch up that area when I have AT LEAST 3/4th INCH OF GROWTH. No exceptions. (When I touch it up, I very very lightly coat it with olive oil first, just to block some of the strenghth of the relaxer.) Also, it is now the LAST area that I relax during the touch up session. I dust it once every few months to take off the dry ends (not even 1/8 of an inch) and I keep it moist with Dew or Scurl. I also seal the moisture with jojoba or olive oil.

The back is coming along nicely. Hope some of this helps.
