I'm new here. I've been lurking for a couple months, and I've taken the plunge and started taking so much of your advice. My hair is definitely improving. I haven't mesaured it, but it is so smooth and so much shinier. I bought some Kiehl's the other day from Nordstrom's and my wallet is still suffocating!

A couple days ago, I started taking biotin. I got it at Wal-Mart for $1.44...At any rate, I saw the post on L-cysteine and eggs so I thought I would try it (I hate eggs and can't find the l-cysteine) Then I noticed some of you are taking different doses of biotin. I went to FDA.gov site to find out what is an acceptable level. There is this 526-page document on it (it is the first .pdf file that comes up when you type "biotin" in the search field). I was six pages in when it says something to the effect that egg whites inactivates biotin. So I guess that means you can do one or the other but not both. Actually it says "raw egg whites," don't think anybody is doing that here, right?

Is anybody here doing biotin and eggs (or l-cysteine)? How's that working? Has anybody tried them successively? Which works better?

Besides that, I have so many questions for all you hair professors. But I'm about to get my workout on...that's my other question though. I workout intensely and it is killing my hairline (frizzy out the wazoo!) I wash and deep condition every three days. I just wonder what you ladies do about the edge of your hair and the sweat, which is great for the body but wreaks havoc on the hair. I'll put my other questions in separate posts.

Thanks in advance.

Just want to say welcome to the board!!!!!

You are in the right place to get advice on your hair care problems/needs. We have lots of ladies that workout - I just recently started and I rinse or condition wash every night, it is tiring, but I can't stand the sweat on my head. I usual just pin my hair up in some type of style and go...granted I've been looking pretty sorry lately too.

Best of luck to you!!!

Hi ...

I see that you hate eggs too. I can't buy cysteine where I live. So, I decided to buy some eggs and try making deviled eggs. Maybe that will be a bit more tolerable. You could try that, as the miracle whip and other spices cover up the egg taste.

Welcome!!!!

Welcome DeQuendre!

I think many here who excercise regularly do conditioner washes and find that to be effective.

L-cysteine deactivates biotin!!!!!

This is new to me......calls for more investigation...I was just about to order some lcysteine from puritan pride....

Welcome to the board..I've been a member since May....and I'm loving it.....I never thought I could go 11-weeks post relaxer (This wednesday) without being bald...I'm shooting for 12 weeks, I'm also venturing into self relaxing something I though I would never do...I too work out alot.. 5 days a week on average...I'm not sure what the hair gurus would say....ask brownrelaxed hair she works out alot....What I do is I wear my silk scarf at the gym, a different color to match my outfit. Yeah when I first joined I got crazy looks with the scarf on but hey I'm there to work out not look cute. You should try that...it lays my hair down, it soaks up some of the sweat and it protects my hair from gym elements like laying down on the sit up mat or on the chest press bench. Also castor oil on my edges have helped to keep them at bay....I wear my hair up so I just slap it on there....castor oil is very thick...but if you're wearing your hair down you might want to dilute the castor oil with water or an essential oil to prevent weighing your hair down.

Thanks for the quick responses!

My last touch up was June 14. Think that's eight weeks. I am also trying to extend to at least 10-12. Most of my hair is fine--that is shiny, smooth....it's just the edges that bother me. I know it needs touching up, but I can't get my timing right. It doesn't matter when I do relax or any other style because that day or the next, I am going to sweat it all out. I mostly pull it back with a scrunchie or have my hair pulled behind my ears and the ends bumped under. I am also trying to lose the heat. Since it's so humid these days, a scrunchie ponytail is fine, but some days I want style...see my dilemma?

At any rate, the report on biotin from the Food and Drug Administration says that it's egg whites that inactivates. If it's true thatl-cysteine is the main ingredient in eggs, then I guess you could make that connection. But note, the report is fairly old, but claims this egg white-biotin interaction is very well known and documented. It also states that one subject (in another study) took 120 MG of biotin daily for 40 days before adverse affects set in...i guess the jury's still out on what is the best/safest dosage... will keep looking, unless somebody here already knows?

Avidin is a protein found in raw egg whites that binds to biotin and prevents its absorption. However, if the eggs are cooked, avidin is inactivated. I also found information to suggest that the high level of biotin (25-30 mcg) found in egg yolks may be nature's way of compensating for this.

So essentially, unless you're eating raw eggs on the regular AND you're not taking a biotin supplement, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Pressncurl, thanks! I guess that means essentially you get everything in the egg...guess I'll be making a lot more fried rice and tuna fish, 'cause those are about the only foods I can stand a little egg in and just barely....Where do you get your info?

Hi, Deq. You're welcome. I usually just do a web search on google and look for reputable sites for the info. I view multiple sites to make sure there is agreement among the various sources.

If you're interested, this info came from:
