My g-ma would wear her bsl hair in 2 braids or a bun. In hind site, she would put a little grease on her hair after washing to give it a little shine (sealing). For church on Sundays, she would undo that braid and fan it out and wear her "waves" (braid out). Sunday night, wash, little grease for shine on hair, and then she braided it again. :perplexed why am I bald headed ? I should have known this all along :ohwell:

:lachen::lachen: I love how simple these regimens are. Not much to think about just wash, grease/oil up, braid or bun for a week and repeat. I cannot wait to have longer hair so that I can do this and drop the wigs. Don't care how old school it is either.

Shoot, as soon as I get enough length to rock long braids or a bun I am in! Makes me feel like I'm doing too much and I barely even do anything now. :lol:
 
This thread has made me realise I've never seen my grandma's hair. She always wears a wig...I don't even know her hair texture.
 
I think we are on to something. So basically we wash, grease, braid and repeat every 7-14 days. That's basically what my granny did for her 5 daughters and they all had long thick relaxed hair. I'd have to add a blow dry since I'm natural and I dont think my normal banding is going to keep it straight enough to french braid.
 
Most of my great grandmothers didn't have hair like mine :look:. But most of them wore styled hair which was a little past SL. The only one that didn't was my dads grandma. She had black 2a-2b hair that she wore in a single braid down to her butt.
 
IDK about my grandmothers (both long dead), but this is how my mom did my hair as a kid--wash every 2 weeks, grease, press, and piggyback braid (she can't cornrow). My hair was only SL because of the medication I had to take which slowed hair/nail growth to a crawl, but my retention was on point and my hair was THICK! I've just recently gone back to this with some modifications--castor oil instead of grease, cowashing during the week instead of shampoo, and a wig since I have to go out every day. We'll see what happens. :yep:
 
my grandmother on my father's side on the other hand has always had very short hair and covered it up with wigs. so, ive got both sides of the spectrum with my grandmothers.
 
Bet y'all won't start a Great Grandma challenge!:grin: Ive only heard of my great x3 that had very long hair and a great aunt of my mine that also had very long hair and I've always been told that they wore their hair in a long braid.

As far as regimens go I have no clue :ohwell: but for all my other female cousins that have long hair our hair was always washed and braided and greased every week or two and our hair was/is long. :yep:

my great grandmother wore short wigs most of the time, and in pics it was always in a bun...a few years before she passed, i remember her hair being a little past APL (but kind of thin due to meds and/or age) and my mom used to put it in a french braid and tuck the ends...my grandmother died before i was born, and the only pics i saw of her she wore wigs, but pics of her as a little girl she only wore here hair in 2 french braids that stopped at about APL...last week my aunt said my grandmother had thick MBL hair before it fell out due to chemo.
 
My great grandmother wore a bun everyday and her hair was APL length. Her daughter (my grandmother) had BSL or longer hair by the time she died in 2006. When she became bedridden, my mom would was her hair and oil with some Optimum hairdress. Then, she would leave it alone until she went to church or the doctors. That's when her hair grew from SL to BSL. Some people said that her hair was like that but longer as a child.
 
My great grandma had waist length hair that was always bunned. My grandma (maternal) had hip length hair that was wavy. She wore it in two braids or a bun. My paternal grandma had natural APL length hair that she kept in plaits under wigs.

Their regimen was "wash, add grease, plait/braid/bun".
 
These responses are hilarious! My great grandmothers kept their hair short throughout my lifetime. My paternal grandmother on the other hand always had BSL hair and she always wore it down - she was a type 2. My maternal grandmother is all about style, she gets it down every two weeks - dyed, lyed, and laid to the side (lol) or a wig - she has always been in a silent competition with her (also) type 2 sister who just wears hers down. Needless to say, I can't gain any hair knowledge from these ladies :lol:
 
BEAUTYU2U my grandmothers are a little different also. My maternal grandmother has had white hair for as long as any of her children can remember. Her hair is amazingly strong and resilient and grows like weeds at least an inch a month. She gets a relaxer on the 1st of every month no matter what. She's 84 and has a head full of thick gorgeous white hair. The thickness of her strands remind me of horses hair. She could probably string a bow for a violin with her hair. My mother has the exact same hair type gray and all but she colors it. My mothers hair grows extremely fast and it's waistlength now but in her wedding pictures in the 70s it was hip length. My mother is natural now and her hair is very coarse but it grows straight. She said she used to get the relaxers to thin it out some.

My paternal grandmother has shoulder length hair now but I think it's because the length was too much for her. Her and all her girls with hair like her (she has 13 children , 4 daughters) had long braids I'd say probably WL-HL was common. Her hair is a silky wavy texture and even now at 86 she only has a few gray hairs it's still mainly jet black. I don't know what she does now for a regimen but due to her age I'd guess it's fairly simple. Her hair is really thin however.

I'd love to have the best of both worlds, great thick hair that doesn't gray but we'll see. I do know that being consistent is best for my hair. So my challenge really needs to be stick to something for 3 months and report back.
