Good Shampoo & Conditioners

What are some good shampoos and conditioners. Also I was told protein conditioners are not good because they dry your hair, is that true? I bought "Keratin Conditioner" is that a protein conditioner?

Hi!

For good conditioners, I would read the 2 polls on this board. One is The CHeapest Conditioners You Love. The Other is The Expensive Conditioners that Work. You'll find a list in there of what alot of girls (including me) on this board like and why.

Shampoo wise I personally love L'anza Protein Plus. Its on drying as the name may suggest. It has a nice low ph too which relaxed hair needs. It cleans really thoroughly and is a treatment shampoo esp. for relaxed hair. You can read about it under www.lanza.com under the Hair Repair products. Others mentioned on this board are Keracare Humecto, Nexxus Botanical, Creme of Nature (a good 'bargain' moisturizing shampoo). Has There are others though which I'm sure others will suggest to you.

Protein conditioners are drying. I only use them approx once a month or just after a relaxer touch up to strengthen the hair. Not sure if keratin ones are more or less drying. I have Aphogee 2 min one which is okay. Not esp. drying. Always follow protein conditioners with a moisturizing conditioner.

HTH!

Hi Shoodrat,

Protein conditioners are good to use only on hair that is breaking and only once every 4-6 weeks. If you use it more frequently, like weekly, you stand the chance of drying your hair out. That's why you should only use protein conditioners if you are having a lot of breakage. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I use a mild protein conditioner everytime I wash my hair which is every 5 days. When using this protein conditioner, I make sure to follow with a moisturizing conditioner. For me, using this has been quite successful with my hair. I use the motions CPR followed with Mizani Moisturfuse.

Since you are recovering from the Naturalxer disaster, I think you should use some intense moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. I'm not familiar with "Keratin Conditioner"--who makes it? Since your hair is just dry not breaking, I don't think you need an intense protein conditioner like ApHogee or the Nexxus reconstructor. But like AmiLion says, a mild protien conditioner won't harm your hair if you use it once a week. Like a cholesterol conditioner. I like the L'anza shampoo, too. Try doing a hot oil treatment before you shampoo. I know, I thought these women were crazy, too. /images/graemlins/grin.gif "A hot oil treatment before I shampoo? I'll just wash it all out!? /images/graemlins/confused.gif " Trust me, it works!
I suggest:
Mizani Moisturfuse Conditioner
Elucence Moisture Benefits Shampoo & Moisture Balance Conditioner
Creme of Nature shampoo (red or green label)
ORS Hair Mayonnaise
Optimum Care Super Protecting Shampoo & Stay Strong Conditioner

The following are kind of 'controversial'--some people say their hair felt stripped after using them, others (like me!) say their hair felt soft and moisturized--
Aubrey Organics Island Butter Shampoo & Island Spice Cream Rinse
Aubrey Organics Rosa Mosqueta Shampoo

Try adding a tsp. of oil to your conditioners to make them even more slippery. (Thanks again, brh!)
I like Proclaim Natural 7 Oil from Sally's. Hot 6 is good, too.

Hello everyone,
This is my first post. I have one big question. Where do you get some of the products so many people recommend such as the Keracare Humecto and the Affirm relaxer? I tried buying these products at Sally's and they said you MUST have a beautician's card. I've tried more than one store and they all say the same thing. I would love to try these as well as Nexus Humecto and Aveda Brilliant Shine but I can't find them anywhere. Please help.

Where do you live? The Korean beauty supply stores usually sell these products without a hassle or you can purchase them online.

These are both for sale to the public at sheldeez.com

Sassygirl!

Glad your enjoying the olive oil tip. So what's your thoughts on the lanza poo? would you purchase or no? (I'm assuming you tried the sample).

ps. Merry Christmas!

I love the olive oil/conditioner tip! I add the oil blend, too. It probably adds up to one tsp...
I really liked the L'anza protein shampoo. It softens my hair much better than the Straitline. (Go figure!) I bought a full size Protein Plus. Another keeper!

The suggestions everyone gave are wonderful and I'll add a few of my own but I wanted to give you a general idea of what you shuld look for in a shampoo and conditioner so you are comfortable experimenting on your own. There are a million and one products to choose from and it can get confusing. Sometimes if you know the results you are looking for it's easier to pick a combo that works for you....

Shampoo: You should look for something that cleans well without stripping. If you have dandruff you should pick one that adresses that problem and use it regularly while alternating with one that either moisturizes or strengthens or both. If your hair is more dry then a moisturizing shampoo is a better bet - Keracare, Creme of Nature - are two examples given above. The Elucence shampoo would also fit the bill. If your hair is more fine and you sometimes have some breakage as a result of your hair being fragile then a reparing shampoo like Lanza Protein Plus will be more up your alley most likely. Of course, everyone is different. Some fine haired have dry hair that needs a mousturizing and sometimes thicker more resilient hair still responds better to a repairing shampoo. When your done your hair shuld feel smooth, soft and clean. Not stripped. Not too dry. You can also use a clarifying shampoo at certain intervals to remove build up from the hair. This is optional but can be done anywhere between every 2 weeks and every month. SOme folks never use one. I find my fine hair needs one (I use Fantasia Pure Tea) once a month.

Moisturizing Conditioners: Your hair should feel soft and smooth after these and some detangle beautifully. They are used to infuse moisture and pliability into the hair. Some contain oils some contsin silicone - again use what wors for you. I like Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal and a new one I "found" in my closet/beauty supply store - a Dominican Olive Oil Conditioner by Nacidit....

Protein Conditioners: There are two types. One is for severly damaged hair and the other is for regular maintenance (regular is realtive here). The regular maintenance ones usually are creamy and are sometimes called reconstructors. They can be used anwhere from weekly to once a month and make the hair feel a little dry yes, but stronger. You should see less hair in your comb after a protein treatment. The dryness side effect is addressed by folloeng with a mositurzing conditioner as described above. This follow up step is necessary. Never skip it. I am a BIG proponent of using these regularly - I use one once every two weeks. I like HI PRO PAC, Mendex, Sebastian 2+1, and Infusium 23 Power Pac Conditioner. Some people like Motions CPR. Any of these are fine as long as you use one regularly on relaxed hair. Remember: regularly is however often YOUR hair needs one.

Intensive protein conditioners like Aphogee and Nexxus Emergencee are stonger products designed for very badly damaged hair. Unless your hair is in this category I'd leave them alone. They can damage hair as they are more drying even than their creamy counterparts and must be used with extreme care.

I hope the ramble helped some. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

What are some relaxers that I could try, the naturalaxer did not straighten my hair and I have alot of new growth. Also how long should I wait to apply a new perm 1 month to a couple of months?

Sassgirl,

That's interesting that the protein plus softened more than the straight line. Thank goodness for samples! That's brilliant that you ended up buying the protein plus though. Join the club! /images/graemlins/wink.gif I hope you continue to like it.

It now sounds like we probably sometimes do similar combo's e.g oil plus moisturfuse after lanza poo /images/graemlins/grin.gif

You're a psychic! /images/graemlins/wink.gif
This is exactly what I did yesterday! Lanza PP shampoo and Moisturfuse mixed with a little olive oil and Hot 6. Result: soft, fluffy hair that I can comb without excrutiating pain! Yippee! /images/graemlins/grin.gif
This combo works very well for my hair. But my guilty conscience forces me to use other products because I've spent so much money on them. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif But I know I'll always return to these. Thanks again!

Tracy as usual, you give excellent advice. I'm not really familiar with the concept of protein shampoos. Then again, I've had blinders on to almost every shampoo since trying Creme fo Nature in 1993. /images/graemlins/blush.gif

I guess I should look into trying a sample of that L'anza. So with a protein shampoo, I suppose I should definitely do a deep moisturizing conditioner right?

Re: L\'anza samples

BRH & Sassygirl

How can I get a sample of the L'anza Protein Plus Shampoo?

Re: L\'anza samples

Go to their homepage http://www.lanza.com and send them an e-mail or call the phone number listed, then tell them what you want. It's as easy as that. /images/graemlins/grin.gif This is how I always get samples.

Re: L\'anza samples

Oh okay......I went to the website and thought there was a section I missed. But I guess they wouldn't want to advertise that they are giving free samples.

Thanks Allandra!!!!!!!!!!

Re: L\'anza samples

I searched for a local salon on the Lanza site and planned to buy the smallest size they had. The receptionist offered me the samples. Free hair products! /images/graemlins/grin.gif
