Hey Everyone
I was listening to a sermon tonight about worrying, or rather not worrying. This was the text:
Luke 12:22-28:
22Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 26Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? 27"Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!
(New Intl Version)
I love this verse because it tells us that we are not to worry. And I believe that God does look after us just as he looks over the animals and flowers, etc. I am a witness to this in my own life. At the same time, though, I wonder about people in poverty and in extreme states of suffering (e.g., the very ill). Let's take sin out of the equation for a minute. (That is, let's not assume that people are in these states because of sins like substance abuse and whatnot. Let's also assume that these folks are Christians.) I've heard people say that we each "have a place" in the world and that just as God is with us in our situations (going to work, school, whatever) He is with them even in their desparate situations. And I do think that there's something to this idea. At the same time, I know that we have an obligation to help our brothers and sisters who are suffering and it offends God when we don't get involved in helping each other. I'm just wondering about God's provision for folks who are in these extreme circumstances.
Any thoughts?
Thanks you all . . . .
