Give yourself the piece of (hair) advice you wish you had taken long ago...

I saw this on Long Hair Community and thought is would be fun to do here. Give yourself the piece of (hair) advice you wish you did long ago... - The Long Hair Community Discussion Boards

My advice:
Just say NO to petroleum jelly and fine tooth combs. - When you are ripping through your excessively greased, tangled hair (from the root) with that comb so hard the teeth and comb are breaking, this in no way means you have strong hair. :realitycheck:

Hair all over the sink when you comb your hair every day is not a normal part of the grooming process, you are dooming yourself to baldness. :hair:

Come on ladies, please share some your hindsight advice.

Never let your hair dry while loose. SSK and tangle city.

Not to jump on every product and technique bandwagon.... I almost ruined my hair a few times doing this. My hair doesn't agree with a good 75% of the techniques that bring many women success on this board.

Detangle, detangle and DETANGLE your hair after taking out your braids AND before washing your hair.

Flat ironing every day is definitely NOT necessary...unless you want to watch your hair fall off your head

The reason why your hair always looks and feels so dry...is because it is. A little moisturizer never hurt nobody
All those broken hairs on the bathroom and bedroom floor are not normal occurence, you are mistreating it, that's why it is breaking.
Oh yeah and cover your head when you are sleeping; your hair is allergic to cotton pillowcases

Learn your curl pattern and what works for you, not what works for someone else.
Be diligent in detangling and keep your hair moist if it looks or feels dry. :) If I had learned this earlier it would have helped me tons!

1) Research! (which I love to do)

2) Be cautious!

Stopping running from water, it's the best moisturizer you could ever use on your hair.

LOL.....

Hot comb + dirty hair + burnt smell = More hair on floor than on head

Use less heat and protective style more often than not.

Protective style and moisture is key.... Always wore my hair down in college and high school and wondered why my hair never passed my shoulders.......

Self,

1. Stop begging yo' mama for a kiddie perm, girl!!
2. Soak your hair w/water or condish before swimming.

when you moisture and seal pay special attention to your ends. i never did and was paying for it.

Leave your hair alone. low maint. and ps are what i'm talking about.

Put the blowfryer and flat iron down!

Rollerwrap=Brastrap

Nobody's hair type dictates that they 'need' a relaxer

You shouldn't have to relax every 4 weeks....your hair doesn't grow that fast!

Never let your hair dry while loose. SSK and tangle city.

THIS! and I will add never let your hair have shrink and tangle on itself I've been keeping mine and my DD's hair stretched as much as possible for the past two months and life has been grand.

Pay attention to ya moisture..Stop being lazy...
Stop wearing so many wash n go's and stretch it out..
Trim your ends please...

Don't let anyone braid your hair too tight! You might get traction alopecia and it might even be permanent!

-- It suck that I didn't know this beforehand, but at least I know better now. :yep:

Stop torturing yourself in Dominican salons; your hair does not have to be straightened for it to be "aiight".

1.) When combing your hair star from the ENDS and work you way UP
2.) When washing your hair...NEVER pile it on top of your head :nono:

1) There's a time for dusting, trim and a cut. Don't try to rationalize why you don't need to do one or the other.

2) Never detangle bushy roots while in a hurry.

3) Take your vitamins and eat cleaner.

Your hair does not like WnG's! Stop the breakage trend and find a new hairstyle! :look: (This is strictly advice from Prettybyrd to Prettybyrd!)

You can't have long hair if you insist upon chopping off all of your hair just because of a minor setback - step away from the scissors, and learn some patience!

  1. Wash n go's are the dam devil

  2. Stop rinsing your hair everyday

  3. Heavy/thick moisturizers do nothing for your super fine strands

  4. Shea butter is not the end all/be all moisturizer. A little s-curl is all you need
