It is offical, I am giving my hair stylist the boot! Ladies, do you ever feel that you know a little more about hair that your stylist. With the help of this board, I have been able to do more for my hair than her. I pay $40.00 every two weeks for a wash and minor deep condition. I try to ask advice about how to obtain my hair and goals and get no answer. Hello, She did not know anything about hair vitamins!!!! I mean, I can save my money and hopefully see better results without her bi-weekly washes. May keep her for touch ups but that is all.

You're absolutely right! You probably do know more and we KNOW that you care more about your hair than she does. My hair has been cut unnecessarily TWICE. That's my fault for going back the second time :wallbash:

You might consider learning to self relax. I didn't want the relaxer run through my entire length and my stylist did not obey my wishes, so I'm on my own from here on out.

I know how you feel nuwoman.

I'm starting to feel like there aren't any stylists out here that I can really trust! Sheesh! At least not with chemicals! Some stylists may (who knows?) be jealous of your long hair, and DELIBERATELY try to sabatoge your progress by leaving relaxer in your hair longer than it should be, giving you unnecessary trims, or by giving you a regular strength relaxer when you WANT a mild one!

I just dont' know who to trust anymore. I don't really have any problems with my hair stylist, but I feel like I know more than she does sometimes! She always tells me: "Crystal, I've been doing hair for 16 years, and I even teach people how to do hair...". But man...I feel like she doesn't listen/ gets offended when I recommend something for my hair.

Why is it that we can demand proper service everywhere else, but when it comes to our hair we feel like we're helplessly in the hands of our stylists? We're paying them GOOD money to do our hair, but yet they get offended if we make special requests for our own hair?

Sorry....I just needed to vent. :nono:

Hey Ladies,

I can't agree with you more!!! I think it's because there are no healthy hair salons. I have very rarely come across a hairdresser that I thought knew what she was talking about. And I still usually know a little something more than she does. I know what I tell them goes in one ear and out the other because my hair isn't particularly long. But it's HEALTHY!!!, and not because of anything any of them have told me!

I've been comtemplating giving hairdressers the boot altogether myself. I actually printed out southerngirlz's instructions for self relaxing. The closest I've come is letting my sister relax as I instructed her. I guess I'm scared about doing that because I don't think I can get the relaxer in fast enough. I also think I need to switch to a mild relaxer. I don't want to be bone straight anymore anyway. If I told a hairdresser that I need to switch to mild I think some of them may laugh because I have coarse textured hair.

Anyway all i know is that most hairdressers could benefit from what we learn everyday on this board.

Are there any hairdressers on this board? You would think quite a few would join, if only to find out about different products, etc.

I appreciate the stylist I have now. She's older, very religious, and a total workaholic. And from what I can tell she likes to see/nurture growing hair. Have you guys seen any difference between older stylists and younger ones?

i gave my stylist the boot earlier this year. when i first went to her she said, "people tell me i have growing hands". i explained that i needed help because my hair was breaking.

needless to say (but i'll say it anyway), my hair didn't progress. when i suggested to her to use drc-28, she looked at me funny. like i had some nerve making suggestions about my haircare. and i don't think she ever heard of drc-28.

i found another salon but dumped them too.

EXACTLY! The last time i went to get a weave and i was transitioning i did not even ask a perm and while washing my hair she slap some relaxer on the front this is how i had the broken area all over my hairline. mind you i did not ask for it she said it was so she could leave some hair in the front to cover the weave i was so heated. and then she got mad when i asked her what perm it was and what strength she did not even know herself and thought i was asking too many questions and being a pest and ask me to seat still grr  each time you try to make suggestions the person get offended and say remember who s the hairstylist. i havent been to her since last year and she called me recently to ask when i was coming back that i needed a retouch and a cut cause it s been almost a year and gave me her new cell dont she realize i gave her the boot! it used to be u go to the stylist whenever you want now its like the girl gonna call u home and say since u did not get a cut u getting a cut nextime me no like it i went natural and do my own hair as any stylist refuse to tell me what strength and what relaxer they be using i dont even know if its lye or no lye

OMG!! I'm not even a licensed hair stylist, but even I know that it is NOT right to put a relaxer on wet or freshly shampooed hair! OMG! :nono:

See, this type of stylist is one I would like to avoid in the future. You did right to leave her. How DARE someone tell me to "sit still" and "be quiet" when I'm just concerned about MY hair?

We can demand good service in hotels, restaurants, shopping stores, malls, etc..you name it. But as soon as we hit the stylist chair, those stylists feel like they can treat us any kind of way, and sometimes (sad to say) we just put up with it. :(

I seriously think that the licensing exams and curriculum for getting a hair license should be more strenuous and competitive. I don't know how hard it is to get into beauty school and get a license, but from my own salon experiences, and reading the experiences of poor women on this board, I feel like it must not be that hard!

WE probably know more about hair on this board than your average stylist and most of us have never ever stepped a foot in beauty school. You just have to do your own research (the internet is great these days!), and look at recommendations from others.

Doctors have to go through years and years of schooling and residency etc....but someone can get a hair styling degree and put dangerous chemicals in people's hair for a fraction of the time. :nono:
It doesn't make sense to me...

I had a hairstylist that told me, "When you become a beautician, then you can tell me how to do hair." I stopped going to her after that.

 I have a friend who has been going to the same stylist for the past 18 years! Every other week and sometimes once a week. This "STYLIST" is very well-known in my city and she stopped taking new clientele 5 years ago because the demand for her services is so high. And yet, despite all that....my friend's hair has never grown past the base of her neck. NEVER. Not ONCE. Her stylist cuts and trims it and relaxes it constantly. I don't trust them.

I wonder how many stylist frequent hair boards :sekret:

shoot you should refer her arse

seems like she might learn more here than she did from getting her license.

I haven't been to a stylist in a year, but the girl I still consider my stylist is good. She has her typical stylist ways, like leaving to pick up her kid and not showing up on time, few and far between. She's always been active in my hair goals. I can express to her how I want things and she even used to give me the comb after the procedure so I could style it how I want. That's a lesson right there, that they may know hair, but I know my hair better than anyone.

Glad you gave her the boot. I personally feel that some people really need stylists because they don't have a clue, nor do they care about their hair, but if you have the interest and take the time, you can be your own stylist. Good Luck to you.

Exactly. I think you're right. I think most black stylists are just used to black women who come in wanting to "look nice" with a "nice style", and don't really care too much about the health of their hair unless (or until) it's falling out.
They're just happy to look nice, and probably don't feel like their hair will ever grow past neck nape length.

But those of us who frequent this board KNOW the difference!!

It's no wonder those stylists look at us like we're crazy when WE finally want to take control over our OWN hair! They're probably not used to people wanting to have an active role in the health and care of their hair. :(

I know all stylists aren't bad. The good ones are few and far between though. I've had enough bad experiences to know when to limit my dependancy on them. I go every 3 months for a touch up and THAT IS IT! After she relaxes my hair she does a rollerset and I leave. I sit under the dryer and style myself at home. I take care of my own hair between touch ups to include treatments, trims and temporary color. Works better for me this way. I keep more money in my pocket, hair on my head and stress free.

The younger dresser seem to be more into the latest trends and not haircare.
Oh yes. Ms.Sidberry will baby your hair to life again. She's about 75 and half her clients are under 30. She's into hair care not hair styles. She tell you NO in a min too. She refused to color my aunts hair she said she didnt have a healthy scalp. And of course, my aunt went to a youngbuck and now is bald. Her hair will NEVER recover from the trauma.

RESPECT FOR US AND OUR MONEY!!! This is what we ask for. Even my doctor of 15 years, with all his training asks my opinion and explains everything. Why won't a hairdresser listen to me:mad: ?

I for one, would frequent a stylist if I could get some input in what's happening to my head.

If I knew how to do my own retouches, I would be hairdresser free.

THANK YOU! I'd be SO free!

Although, I have to admit, it IS nice getting pampered and having someone ELSE do my hair for a change. Washing MY hair for a change. But...oh well... :-/

You know something?? I just noticed that a lot of white women usually ONLY go to the salons when they want a cut, a color, a perm, or some kind of fancy-schmancy do. Hmmm....

Me too, but after today's NIGHTMARE, I'm teaching myself to self-relax. My goal is to have self-relaxing perfected by this time next year...

My three favorite stylist lines of all time:
1) AA Stylist who's not all that great
Me: Marguerite, I need to do a protein treatment this week b/c I had a relaxer two weeks ago
Marguerite: No, you don't. Too much protein will break your hair. Why do you come in here always tellin me how to do my job? Just because you see these products in the BSS doesn't man you need it on your hair."
Me:  I understand that, but my hair has been breaking a little, and I'd like to strengthen it up in addition to doing a hair mask.
Marguerite: If you don't like the way we do hair here then do your hair at home.
Me:  Silence
Me:  exit stage left

2) Dominican stylist "Clara"(This happened today...)
Clara: You need a trim; I'll trim your ends today
Me: No, thank you. I'm not interested in receiving a trim today.
Clara: Your ends are dead, they need life, you need a trim
Me: I understand that, but I perfer to trim my own hair
Clara: No, I'll just go ahead and trim today
Me: No, I don't want a trim
Clara: Well I'll just clip them. I'm not gonna cut all your hair off. I know how hard it is for you black women to grow your hair long.
Me:   I appreciate your concern, but I don't want scissors anywhere near my head.

3) Dominican stylist "Clara"
Clara: You went too long without a relaxer. You need to relax your hair every 6 weeks.
Me: :::smile and nod:::
Clara: Your hair is too thick. I charge extra next time for your relaxer.
Me: O.k. (At this point, I already knew I was never coming back so I was like, whatever.)
Clara: Did I already tell you the price?
Me: Yes, $50 for the relaxer.
Clara: Uh huh, and $35 for a wash, set, and blowdry.
Me:  Um, you didn't mention that on the phone.
Clara: Oh, well it's $35.
Me: In addition to the $50?
Clara: Yes.

I waited til she rinsed the relaxer out (didn't want her jackin my relaxer up cuz she was mad) and told her I wasn't payin $35 for a wash & set. A relaxer implies the entire servce, sans trims, cellophanes etc. I was like, just rinse the relaxer, and I'll go home and finish it. She said she couldn't let me leave like that, so in the end, she did the entire service for $50 b/c I was NOT bout to pay $85 for a basic relaxer service with no trim, special conditioning or cellphane...she lost her Dominican mind!

I've got more where those came from, but those are my favorites...

Oh I feel your pain, and you did the right thing by leaving and not paying the $35 extra- she was definitely trying to rip you off! And this has got to be the best line ever --->> "your ends are dead, they need life" puhleassee...

I just feel alot of hairdressers feel they know everything about hair. They are sometimes offended when a client seems to know more about hair than they do. Well in my profession, I am always trying new ways to innovate myself and do my job better. Hair stylist are not always open to the same idea.
Besides, I knew she should get the boot when she wanted to relax my hair too soon. I do not like to relax very often because I want more thickness. Besides, since I have been going to her my hair seems really limp.

I am a licensed stylist among other things, but I only work with damaged hair and refuse to perm relax or press. So you know I am ON OUR (THE LHCF) SIDE. Give em the boot I say, when you pay and they do not obey!!!

There are some stylists that can give you best of both worlds. I believe you get what you pay for. When you go to a stylists with great knowledge and pay top dollar for the best products your hair will be healthy and beautiful. I know it takes a lot of research and perserverance(sp?) to fine one, not to mention a budget:ohwell: but I view my hair as an investment. I will eat bologna and cheese sandwiches:lol:
