Getting my first sew-in with Milky Way (nervous!!!)

Got my ever first sew-in (Pics are up!!!)

OK, so I'm getting my first sew-in on Tuesday. After doing all the research, I decided to go with either Sensationnel or Saga. But when I went to the BSS, she didn't even had those brands. My sister insisted on me getting Milky Way, but I didn't want to because I read such horrible reviews from here and BHM. They didn't have any of the brands I had heard of so I broke down and got it. erplexed

OK, so what should I do to make sure it's not gonna be a tangled nasty mess? Should I wash it before getting it installed? What products should I use on it after washing it (after it's been installed?) I was thinking of using the VS So Sexy Detangler and some NTM Silk Touch Leave In Cream and either braiding it, airdrying and flat-ironing, or rollersetting.

I just don't want to look like a fool you guys.

Milky Way is okay if you don't wash too much and do not keep it in too long (4-6wks). Also shorter styles (ex. bobs) if straight seem to work well. I think Silicon Mix is a good product for this hair and also a smoothing serum used sparingly may keep tangling at bay. Don't forget to moisturize and cleanse your scalp underneath.

It'll probably be alright until your first wash or until that coating wears off. That's when the hair starts to act crazy. Stay on top of brushing/combing it. Make sure you cover it up at night. And once you wash it, make sure you DC it afterward. That should help tame it.

I only plan on keeping it in until the end of my 12 week stretch (Feb 7) so if it can last until maybe the middle of February, I'll be happy. if I like the weave and feel I can keep my hair healthy with it, I'll spring for HC or Lanik's for my next install.

i had a milky way install and the texture matched dead on to my straight hair. it was nice and flowy for about 2 weeks then when i washed it became very tangled. it wasnt too bad but it was very annoying. it also could not hold a curl, just a slight bump on the ends. plus it shed like a beast. i had hair everywhere. its an ok brand if you want to wear hair for like 2-3 weeks possibly a month max.

I remember years ago when I was about 21 years old, I would purchase cheap straight weaves and actually relax them before application. I would let the relaxer sit on the weave for about a whole day, neutralize and condition then sew in after it was dry, followed by moisturizing and flat ironing. Sometimes I would have it slightly layer-trimmed and I remember that it never got tangled, weird but true.

Also, washing it with shampoos always seemed bad for those lesser quality type weaves while they were sewn in. To me, it was better to co-wash them and since discovering WEN and Hair One, I think it's even better nowadays than back then. I am so happy to have these 2 cleansing conditioners handy for something like this.

I might be putting a sew-in next month anyway so I will be trying this again.

I tried relaxing some yaki hair and it starting shedding terribly. So you may want to test a piece before relaxing all the hair at once.

I think minimal manipulation is the key to this hair. Co-washing is a good idea. HairOne from Sallys has silicone in it so it may work as well as the Silicone Mix.

Milky way looks great for a couple of weeks. Others said it as well but Low manipulation is best for this hair. When you're around the house and have no where to go, keep your hair wrapped up. This hair unfortunately tangles bad, but blends pretty well when you first get it installed.

For future reference, you may want to buy hair online so that you'll have it in time for your sew ins. I am a sew-in queen and have probably had every hair there ever was installed on my head.

It wasn't yaki I relaxed that many years ago. I don't even know if yaki existed 18 years ago. , I will try to find regular straight hair that's not yaki.

Definitely do not wash it before your install. Honestly Milky Way hair will not look decent past your first wash. I hate to be negative but I am keeping it real. If they won't take it back maybe you can sell it to your sister (since she pressured you to get it, lol) and go to a different beauty salon to find a better brand of hair. Outre velvet remy is supposed to be a good BS brand.
Another option may be to just plan on keeping it for about a month while you work on getting some better hair. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I only want to leave it in for a month. I still have the receipt (and my sister is real close with the owners). I will see if they will trade the Milky Way for the the Outre. You know, I saw that and she let me touch it and I didn't like how it felt, but that was compared to the MW, which was really soft. I got it home and realized I didn't like the color. I wanted to get the color 2 since that is closer to my own natural color, but my sister convinced me to get 4. But it's too light. The MW is also "weave-y" soft and has a weird smell. I should have just stuck to my guns and gotten what I wanted.

There was another BSS or should I say BS Warehouse that sold Sensationnel. If they let me refund the hair, I'll go get the Sensationnel at the BSW.

Sensationall is not good either. Go for the Zury or the Outre. If you keep the milky way try to go as long as possiable without washing it. This is true for all BSS hair but it definitely goes for Milky way.

OP, you have reason to be nervous. I'm still having flashbacks of my Milky Way bird's nest. The only thing I can recommend i is live like there's no tomorrow for those 2 weeks when it looks nice (& it does look really nice at first) because it's all downhill from there.

Keep it away from water & try not to sweat.

I returned it and got Black Diamond color 2 in 12" instead. I wanted to get the Outre but she only had it in color 1 and I think that's too harsh for me. My appt is at 4:00 tomorrow. I'll have pics then.

I'm happy that you decided to return the MW hair. I hope Black Diamond works for you. The only BSS hair that works for me is Model Model premium. Good luck, can't wait to see the pics!!

Yeah, I've read some things about Black Diamond on BHM. I hope he turns out well. I also bought some Elasta QP H-Two leave-in that I'm gonna use on my own hair while it's weaved up.

I've heard a lot of good things about Sensationnel Goddess Remi.

That's my favorite hair to use and I have not had any problems with it. She may be talking about one of Sensationnel's regular lines and not the Goddess Remi.

OK, I think this hair is gonna work for me. It's very close to my own natural hair color and texture and it's holding a curl with a cheapo hair curler. Me likey so far.

Yeah, I'm having lots of fun playing with it, experimenting with curling it and flat-ironing it. It looks really pretty when I use the 1.5" barrel iron. What I like is that it looks like my hair when it's been professionally done.

I can already tell it's better than the MW. The MW wouldn't even take a curl with my iron. Wouldn't even take a wave erplexed

I'm so happy you returned it as well. Milky Way is the absolute worst! I couldn't even get to wash it because it would tangle after the first few days. When buying hair at the BSS, open the pack and run your fingers through it. You shouldn't have ANY difficulty getting your fingers through. With some hair brands, including MW, you'll notice this problem. I've never tried Black Diamond but I'm sure your hair will come out great!

I am sorry, it was not referring to the goddess Remy though I have used that too and I did not like it. It was waaaay to straight for my tastes...anywho...The black diamond should work...I have heard great things
